Hum..

in DAI the background don't mean anything . And were kinda dissapointing . Especially the merc .

Too bad we are stuck playing Humans , cose would have had more interesting background .

Imagine like :

-from thessia

-from palaven

-from Tuchanka

Since we will be human , I guess we are all from earth or a colonie .

-boring Soldier background

-Jump zero biotic

-Medic

-Infiltrator

well I'm hoping for a nuke for the medigel system and to have a Medic class . Something like 'After passing your N7 training you enrolled in a medical School . But you never had the chance to see the interior of a surgery room before you were called to the front ' .

I've been wanting to play a proper medic since I specced my main shepard (sentinel) into that direction in ME1.

Or a tank/damage-absorber. Like one of ME2's sentinel specs.

Give sentinels a shield, like N7 paladins, biwaer pliz!

A field medic would be awesome !

It be a support class like the biotic , but instead of lifting an ennemy you heal your squad . You could throw smoke grenades as well .

And an engineer class with turret  :D

The ideal background is a newly promoted character in MP, and you all know it deep down to!

Someone who is an academic sounds really great to me. Like someone who is a botanist/paleontologist/paleontologist/xenobiologist/geologist or something like that. And it would make sense if the Ark theory is true to have someone like that on board the ship. And if you were a part of the alliance or a third party that was employed by the Alliance you would likely have weapons training, etc.

Or your suggestion of of three different backgrounds so people can still play a soldier if they want, or whatever. Actually that kinda reminds me of KotOR, depending on what class you chose for your character you were "recruited" into the Republic for different reasons. Soldier was just that Republic soldier, scouts were employed by the Republic to do scouting (obviously), and scoundrels were recruited for their knowledge of the space lanes and their ability to smuggle things.

I loved playing an engineer in the ME trilogy, but it never really came up in dialog or anything except a couple times in DLC for ME3 (Omega, Citadel) which was disappointing. I would really like to see this rectified in future ME games.

I don't mind a pre-generated background (with some degree of choice) as long as it's mentioned throughout the whole game, if it's not then what's the point?

yeah I'd prefer an Academic character for my protagonist as well. or at least some options that make that possible.

An astronaut a radiation wave hit that got shot through a wormhole, now lost in some distant part of the universe on a ship, a living ship, full of strange, alien lifeforms, while being hunted by an insane military commander, doing everything he can, just looking for a way home ....

In all seriousness, I'd like a non-military role, and if it is a military role, have the option for the PC to not be that thrilled about it. I'd like the option to choose one of three backgrounds, surveyor (such as a cartographer, geologist, town planner), who determines how well a planet will suit colonisation, technician being team support, with roles including medic, engineer, drone operator etc depending on class - essentially making sure the expedition team is running at peak efficiency, a some soldier/security/mercenary type for the people who just want to shoot stuff and blow excrement up - they get no story or narrative advantage like the others would, but get a boost in combat skill spending. Expedition leader, not captain - in what universe is it logical to send the captain, tactical officer, chief medical officer and chief engineer on a risky mission?

Though if they are going for the whole Western frontier thing, they could have typical western roles such as miner, merchant, doctor/medicine woman, schoolmistress, brothel madam etc and the game is essentially Oregon Trail IN SPACE!

Yeah I'd like to play the game almost from Liara's perspective. That kind of thing and by that I mean she was on an expedition calmly doing her work when all of a sudden hell  broke loose and she was dragged right into an uncontrollable mess, and she ended up having to use her exprttise to help Shepard solve it all something like that really

Lumberjack, Miner, Rancher.... A manly man's background. somebody with hair on his chest.

Oh you mean like.."He's a lumberjack, and he's okay, He sleeps all night and he works all day....He cuts down trees, he skips and jumps, He likes to press wild flowers. He puts on women's clothing And hangs around.... In bars"... Yes a manly man's background.. :D

Smuggler of some sort would be my preference.

Someone Han Solo or Malcolm Reynolds esque. Or reformed smuggler, like space Ser Davos.

I wouldn't want them as a late teen, but I definitely want them younger than Shepard was.

I like the idea of an academic background (especially being an instructor myself). My only concern is that knowing that combat will be one of the central mechanics of the game, it may be stretching belief a little bit to have a humble professor able to single-handedly wipe out entire platoons. But I suppose how much that bothers you is just one of those things that will vary from person to person. And hell, if ME:A handles character progression anything like the original Mass Effect did, it might even make more sense to have a character from a non-military background. The way a low-level soldier handled sniper rifles in that game, you'd think Shepard was anything but a highly trained soldier.

Also, I wonder how, if at all, the PC's backstory will be integrated into the game, assuming that most of the PC's backstory took place in the Milky Way (I might be wrong about this, though). I remember a pen and paper game I was in a few years ago in which I prepared an elaborate backstory for my character. The first thing that happens is that we get zapped into a different plane of existence, and the entire character history goes for naught the whole rest of the adventure.

I don't know... the scientist who saves the day is nothing new. Gordon Freeman did quite well, didn't he? Let's not forget Dr. Solus.

We could make it work.

I think if thought's put into it it can be done I'm halfway through watching Star Trek Voyager again on DVD atm along with other things I'm doing and if I'm remembering Janeway's backstory correctly she started out as a science officer and all that in herearly career before she became Voyager's captain. Of couirse at times in order to protect people and her crew she at times had to be gungho as well. Just like Liara had to be in order to bring down the shadow broker and after taking over his network. So it can be done it just needs to be done cleverly and carefully.

The smuggler or someone else who is familiar with the fringes of society would be really cool too actually. Getting to pick between solider, scientist, and smuggler instead of spacer, colonist, and earthborn would be nice.

An important consideration here is how a scientific character's expertise would tie into the plot.

That brings up a lot of very difficult issue. 'Scientific' characters and plots are incredibly hard to write well.

Possible backgrounds:

The ship's cook

The ships yeoman/yeowoman

A refugee of dubious origins

A mercenary

A stowaway

A rich guy/gal who's paid to be onboard - a vacation cruise ship?

A thief with a stolen ID

A juvenile delinquent

An ex-con

A paid "companion" on the job

Gah. I'm tired of the same old same ol' thing. Aren't you?

Because of that teaser trailer I want my character to be a bit of an outlaw and the game to have a sort of wild west inspace feel to it. I DO NOT want my character to be another soldier, N7 or otherwise!

I always thought it would be cool to be some mechanical or biotic genius child that was kidnapped from a colony by slavers, and then used your biotic or tech powers to escape the slavers. Then, you'd go back to Earth, be raised by your grandparents, graduate from a State University, and then enter the Alliance Academy and get your N7. Then all hell breaks with the reapers while you are on leave. You have an integral part in the resistance, and somehow space magic takes you to Andromeda.

I don't know about that as I thought Liara was written very well so was Mordin. At least I thought they were
