I don't know about that as I thought Liara was written very well so was Mordin. At least I thought they were

. . .

--------

But yeah, we're talking a scientific character as the protagonist in a shooter mc-powersalot game.

Liara was written well, but most people were not happy with how her 'expertise' at being a Shadow Broker was handled in ME 3. Anyway, it's a question of if the character's expertise comes in to solve or contribute to solving the driving conflicts of the plot.

Can't really define an ideal background for the Andromedagonist until I know the circumstances of the setting within which they grew up and developed into whatever profession they're in.

For the first time in a Bioware game i want a ignorant, clueless character especially in technology. Something like Saints Row's protagonist.

Like s/he's talented in human relations and fighting but not space tech freak. Wasn't s/he a simple person anyway?

N:NPC, P: Protagonist

N:"Erm, i wanted Stealth Field Amplifier, not a bigger gun for the ship."

P. "Who needs stealth when you can pew-pew? Back to your station."

N: "A-hole."

P: "So... How do i make this work?" *holds a some kind of post modernistic sci fi gun*

N explains, can be a cutscene or something.

P: "Right... I guess i'll leave this junk and take my assault rifle."

Or could be completely opposite(Being a science freak, bad at dialogues and fighting) but i don't think any modern game out there can accomplish it.

In short i want different game styles and balance in between them with pros and cons.

I'm hoping we get a choice this time around. Is our background scientific based or soldier? Or a mix? If we're heading off some sort of expedition into the uncharted unknown then we must have done something very impressive in our past. Like how Shepard was chosen. Shepard was known for a very important event in his/her past.

So what will the new commander's be?

I'm one of the few who agree with your Liara sentiment. I thought it was great that we met her "dad" in ME2 and it was revealed in ME3, she also, like Tali and Garrus had development.

I am absolutely on board with the academic/scientific background. I find nothing particularly interesting or unique about playing yet another space marine within a sea of games with military protagonists.

You know, the "science hero" used to be a common protagonist, but is now something of a forgotten trope (possibly related to the popularity of the "technology bad, nature good" trope. Or maybe society decided no one could possibly be motivated to do science for its own sake - or, at least for that to be portrayed as a good thing). But in the 50s and 60s, there were a lot of heroes that were part badass normal person (no powers), part super curious scientific genius that went on adventures with cool inventions (Tony Stark, anyone?).

There are fewer and fewer recent examples (trying to think of specifically action/adventure type films or games. Ghostbusters counts, Big Hero 6, others have already mentioned Half Life...). Scientists seem to usually be the bad guys these days.

I think it's easily possible to have a believable, interesting story with a character that is not military (or at least not a soldier - there are plenty of military funded science and technology projects out there), but still has a high rank (so it's reasonable for them to lead a team) and combat training, which is honestly more believable than combat experience in a game where you start at level 1.

I don't think it's necessary for the protagonist to start out as a particularly important figure. In fact, I think it's better - if the backstory is interesting, I'd rather be playing it than simply told what happened (backstory is not character development, characters doing things is character development - to paraphrase a quote). They only need to be just significant enough in their field of expertise - which might be so specific that they don't have much competition - that they would be chosen over others to lead a team. Or not, maybe they only lead because no one better is available (ship crashes, all the important people die. Or they're taken by bad guys. Or you and a small group mutany. Etc., etc.)

Ideas are easy, writing is hard. I'm interested to see what BioWare comes up with. I'm already super excited about an exploration focus, as that's pretty much my favorite thing about most games.

Please excuse my excess of parentheses...

Heh, yeah I actually liked the way Liara was written, for the most part. But that's because I'm a filthy deviant, and apparently, so are you.

I think it is a safe bet that getting to Andromeda must have been quite difficult. Not knowing what to expect, I would think it's more than likely that most people taken along would have been military. Though I agree with you that military does not mean soldier. I did not think it would be a smart idea to have non-military characters as PC but your combat training emphasis especially since we do start at level 1 makes sense. I guess it is possible to be a ecologist with at least some training to be able to protect themselves.

Bottomline for me, as long as the MC can justifiably hold their own in a combat situation, then I'm ok with scientist characters etc. But if they are going to need their asses saved whenever a firefight breaks out, then no, I'm not ok with that. Neither am I ok with a scientist with no combat training getting headshots at a 100 yards without a problem.

In the next game I'd love the option to play as an academic, maybe someone in a scientific field...

Doctor .... Freeman

... I presume?

Though we've already been told that the protagonist is going to be a Pathfinder... which pretty much implies N7 Scout/Ranger type of affair going on.

Well personally I'm hoping we get a few options on that like what we do with our Warden in DAO because that's one of the main things I like about Origins the option to choose my background

Even for female PC?

even better. My characters need to exhume dominance whether they are male or female. I want their background to be one that instills upon them an aura, one that makes so every time they enter a room it becomes their room. I don't care if they are a soldier a bounty hunter, assassin, weapons designer, demolitions expert, space miner, space farmer or whatever.

for Andromeda my ideal background would be some sort of war veteran who is now in civilian life, the history of their service would be open to the player to fill in (like the preset prehistories)

If we get a choice of backgrounds more along the lines of what the first ME did I would like to see little side quests come back for them or bits of dialog in some missions change depending on what background you picked. (Though I was kind of disappointed with the War Hero background compared to the Sole Survior in terms of extra lines to the related side quests) Something like that would be nice to have back since I'm kind of doubting we'll get playable backgrounds like what DAO had.

That would be my preference as well. Maybe something like Miranda in that she ran the lab which put Shepard back together after the Normandy SR1 was destroyed but also could fight a fair bit. So she was pretty good all rounder who was equally skilled in both areas

I usually pick spacer/ruthless . Play the racist ex-terra firma who is on the road of learning and yadayada...

what I like though..is if such little observation to your background arent jammed at the beginning and then never show up later . I like it spread trough the whole game... ^_^

I tend to go Colonist/Sole Survivor cause I'm horrible to my characters and feel good to think they are in psychological and emotional turmoil deep inside. :)

It spreading out is a little nice though imo i feel some of the choices get slightly more attention than others like Spacer and Sole Survivor not much mind you but just a tiny bit more. I would like to see something like that again though but maybe with a little more choice if its brought up in dialog to personalize it a touch more.

I enjoyed it more than the war hero quest which felt a bit lacking in it being more personal to Shepard compared to the sole survivor quest. Also not sure if it goes with the other backgrounds but I do like that SS is kind of brought up in ME3 as well. It's a small touch but I like small touches.

It is? How so?

They could be done better, thats true but I like the idea of them still. The Colonist one?

I believe it was on one of the console's when you're storming the Cerberus base it's mentioned about the attack on Akuze and Cerberus green lighting it or something like that it's been a while since I played so I forget what they say about it word for word.
