Overpriced DLC is overpriced.

Still, the armors for women look kind of fun. LOOK AT THEM ABS. Also, I want my mage to run around like this in a cold mountain area, so I will probably get it. I have no restraint and little regrets.

When is the story DLC?

Meanwhile, CD Project Red be like.....

[cut image]

Bioware did the DA Keep, Black Emporium, free MP DLC and continued patch support which is still ongoing as of this week. In my opinion, BioWare and CDPR have offered a comparable amount of free content to players, though in very different ways, which makes it nigh impossible to say which developer has given away more free stuff.

Certainly, CDPR have done a better job of promoting awareness of their free content (the free DLC notification flyer that you posted an image of attests to that fact, especially since it comes with the game), but it's unfair to imply that BioWare haven't been generous so far, even if they have at the same time arguably overpriced some of their DLCs. But just look at the DA Keep: it required an insane amount of work over multiple years - the Beta opened in 2013 I think and it's still being updated as of yesterday. And it's completely free.

Oh lordy, that picture of Solas next to a female Lavellan. He has a narrower waist than her, and his hips are jutting out.

For the love of the Maker will someone give Solas something to eat! The poor guy looks like he spent the last 6 months in a death camp.

Male elf inquisitor looks worse, Solas is a bodybuilder compared to him.

1) DA Keep isn't DLC but a platform in which allows for gamers to import their save files into DAI and possibly DA4.

2) Black Emporium, I will give them that. They could have easily charged it as paid DLC/content but they didn't.

3) Free MP DLC is a given considering that Bioware/EA can get their money back through paid micro-transactions within the DLC.

4) In the end, Bioware still is taking a business focused approached to DLC rather than a consumer focused. If they want to charge for the Avaar stuff then that is fine, but it should have been part of the Jaws of Hakkon instead of something separate. By separating the two, Bioware is just trying to be greedy. They charge $15 for the story pack and another $5 or so for the Spoils of the Avaar.....which really should have just been included in the Jaws of Hakkon DLC pack.

What CDPR is doing is different. I am sure that both of their story expansions will feature new armor and weapons, but those armor and weapons will come with the paid DLC, not separate so that they can "double-dip" like what Bioware has done with Jaws of Hakkon/Spoils of the Avaar and what they seem to be doing over again with Spoils of the Qunari assuming that the next story DLC is indeed Qunari focused.

It's a matter of perspective. The DA Keep is a free service that BioWare provided to the DA fanbase. It's not DLC, but it is another form of offering something substantial to customers free of charge. That nets them a lot of respect in my book.

Fair enough, but for people like me who play MP but don't use microtransactions it's pretty much win-win. I understand where you're coming from, but they need to make money somehow and this seems a pretty fair way to do it. It's in line with 99% of big budget multiplayer games. It would be really interesting to see what CDPR would do if they went down the MP route.

4) In the end, Bioware still is taking a business focused approached to DLC rather than a consumer focused.

I'm not sure I understand the distinction. Focusing on consumers is the same thing as focusing on the business. That's what public relations is, and CDPR are very good at it.

I completely sympathise with this view. It's not a huge deal for me because it's not too much money, but I can't fault your logic.

I guess I just do not see how people can defend Bioware when they try to "double dip" with their DLC. It is obvious that the Spoils of the Avaar DLC is related to the Jaws of Hakkon story DLC and yet gamers just allow Bioware to get a free pass by not including the Spoils of Avaar content inside the $15 Jaws of Hakkon pack and it seems like they are doing it again with Spoils of the Qunari.

Again, I do not know if this is Bioware's doing or EA, but it seems like gamers are giving them a free pass.

We're pretty much agreed on this. I don't know what BioWare's (or EA's) motivations were for selling the item packs as separate DLCs and at the chosen price points, but it seems a bit steep. I certainly don't think it's the best decision they could be making in terms of customer relations, but there are going to be plenty of people who think the DLC is worth $5 to them. I can't really fault anyone who buys the DLC since they are free to do what they want with their money, but the item pack DLC just seems a bit tacky to me.

Ultimately I'd still say that it's a pretty minor transgression in the grand scheme of things considering how much content BioWare have given away for free, but everyone will have a different perspective on that.

Bioware did the DA Keep

I would suggest that the DA Keep is as much for BioWare themselves as it is for the fans, and would expect to see it replicated in the future for other multi-title franchises where world state carries over.  It allows them a single point of contact to organize, update and expand on their world state offerings without having to focus on save game imports in each individual title across multiple platforms.  Yes, we as consumers also benefit, but the customer interface is not, by any stretch of the imagination, the sole purpose of the Keep.

This argument applies equally to CDPR's free Witcher DLC. Everything every game developer does is as much for themselves as for the fans. I don't really get what point you are making.

Thanks for the review, Biofan.

I was wondering if you knew the armor details. Such as what material does it require. And are the slots utility or defensive. I'm still on the fence about the pack when it comes out, so if I know the armor quality that might sway me one way.

Thanks again. I appreciate the time you took to make this. It was really helpful and informative.
