personally I've no interest in item packs, alternate outfits, etc. they seem to basically just drop a crate into the game world containing free loot (no cost or effort needed in game, just the real money cost of the DLC). I honestly don't understand the appeal here. not trying to criticise those who do buy them, everyone's free to spend their own money on whatever they wish and to play in whatever manner they enjoy. I'd just like some help in understanding what the appeal is to those who do prefer these kinds of DLCs
question to those who buy item DLCs

It's not so much the DLC as it is what's in it. Not a fan of Avaar armor, so I didn't buy that but I've been wanting Qunari armors since release so I will get this pack provided they actually release it to us PC plebeians.

I just want the mounts and the decor. Collecting mounts, in any game that has them, is a bad habit for me. Plus I like changin up my Skyhold decor a lot, otherwise the place gets boring. I could do without the armour, however if they added new weapons too I would be very happy. It's not a set without weapons and armour.
so, boils down to more shiny!

I would say people buy item packs like this for the exact reason you don't. They have an interest in alternate appearances as a way to change up a playthrough. DAI has few models for armor, and it gets tiring seeing the same mesh all the time if a person happens to play the game more than twice. New items keeps things interesting, is good for roleplay reasons (if a person is so inclined), and adds replayability to a single player game that lacks user created content.
While I'm sure most people would prefer having an interesting quest with schematics and loot at the end, getting stuff for free in a box is also a good way to make sure your character looks unique right from the start of the game, rather than waiting until 10 levels later when the power of the item is more equally represented.
tl;dr people like shiny things. brain releases dopamine upon acquisition of new stuff.

I don't think anyone prefers them.
For me it's mostly just an OCD compulsion that I must have all the things...
Same. I don't have a logical reason, yet I do it anyway.

People like aesthetics. It's not that complicated. Some people don't care, but most tend not to like having an ugly character (hence the hair complaints) or walk around half the game in an ugly outfit (hence the Skyhold outfit complaints). It's the same for armour and weapons and mounts and decor and really, everything. I can't say I'm thrilled about DA:I's packs so far though. They suck. I'd definitely take an upgrade to both of the examples above though, and I'd pay for it in a heartbeat.

As silly as this sounds, I normally purchase item DLCs for games I enjoy because it's a pretty inexpensive way to give some support to the developer, sort of a "Here's ten bucks, keep up the good work!"
That's not silly at all. That's one reason I do it too.

The Mass Effect 2 Items Packs had great weapons and armors to purchase. The Alternate Appearance packs were cosmetic stuff I now wish I never bought.
The Mass Effect 3 Item Packs also gave incredible weapons that I'm glad I own. Those Alternate Appearance packs at least gave squadmates a different buff when used.
The Dragon Age ][ Item Packs were great all around. Every class had great weapons, armors, and accessories.
I won't be touching the Spoils of the Avvar unless it goes on sale.

Two reasons,
1. Usually, the item packs I buy have stuff that I want to see on my character (Concerning armor and clothes in games, I'm more into aesthetics than stats.)
2. I feel like if I support a game I like by buying its stuff, they'll make another one, and I really want a DA4 ![]()

I bought all of the DA2 item packs and quite enjoyed them. I have no interest in either the Avaar or Qunari stuff so I won't be purchasing these.
I happen to like the DAI armor and weapon aesthetic that is available to us in the game, so unless they release something really spectacular I don't imagine that I will be purchasing any item packs for DAI. My primary desire is for them to have schematics available for the other weapon/hilt/grip and armor models that are actually in the game but not currently available to the player. The few added with the Black Emporium were a nice start, I'm hoping they will add more of those to the BE.
I felt that the DA2 armor variety was severely lacking, so I was happy to purchase those item packs. One of my favorite DA armors across all three games is The Fugitive's Mantle -- despite its unfortunate low resolution, and I was happy to see some elements of that armor carry over into the DAI mage armors. (Also, Ser, the templar trainer, is wearing this set!)

As others have said, it's sad to see the quality of the packs go down in DA:I compared to previous games. Usually, I'm all OCD and buy everything too, but I just can't do it with DA:I so far. If they release an armour pack I actually like, I'll consider it.

I bought Spoils of the Avvar to put on my characters for JOH (which I had not played yet). It just seemed fitting that they would dress up in local gear, and the highest tier schematics had very good armor stats. I had some PSN credit to burn, anyway. Item packs aren't usually my thing, though. The only other Bioware item/outfit pack I've ever bought was one of the rogue packs for DA2 because the designs of the armors totally fit my Hawke.
In a nutshell: On occasion, I'm willing to give in for the roleplay.

I'm buying decor stuff in SWTOR, because it's really beautiful there, from the fountains and statues for the stronghold to various iconic Kotor1 outfits, mounts like the real Walker tank and cool-looking weapons. I'm enjoying the game more with those.
Here, though, I don't see anything that would interest me aesthetically, so I'm not buying Avvar/Qun stuff. Besides, in SWTOR I have my own stronghold on Tatooine, nobody can take it from me. Here I'm basically a hostage of the Inquisition, and the place is not my home, especially after Solas is gone. So I really don't care what kind of candelabra's hanging there.

I prefer, by far, story DLC to item DLC. That said, items can add flavor, color and even lore and RP opportunities to the game, which can increase my immersion and enrich my experience.
I bought all item DLC in Dragon Age 2 because I loved the game and wanted to support Bioware. While I didn't love every item in the packs there were some neat things in there. Some had an interesting history like Aldenon's Vestments, Freedom's Promise and Arms of the River Dane. Others, like Malcom's Honor (indeed, all the items that once belonged to Malcome Hawke) were a great RP opportunity and added depth to my character. To me, DA2's item packs were more than just stuff, and I appreciated the care they took to make these items feel like part of the world.
I also love DAI and want to support Bioware, but I have to at least be moderately interested in DLC before I purchase it. So far, the item packs really aren't for me. I would buy the HECK out of a Dalish/Elven DLC though. ![]()

Even in games that last only 12 hours, it can be fun to have other outfits to look at.

That's not silly at all. That's one reason I do it too.
This is the reason I'm inclined to do it as well. It's frustrating when I feel like they're exploiting me rather than rewarding me, though.
In any event, I buy them for games that promise multiple playthroughs. I feel I got my money's worth with the DA2 packs and the various ME packs, because they offered a good amount of content for the price (especially DA2 - 81 items for $20, all told) and I completed those games (with the exception of ME3) several times each.
The avvar and qunari packs are lazy and gouge-y.

- more customization options
- better aesthetics
- "theme packs" (enable better roleplay)
- better stats (level restriction prevents OP protagonist)
- yet another way to support the developer
I don't buy them because:
- I kicked the habit of being a completionist regarding the purchase of game contents
- immersion (as you said, crates just magically appearing in your ramshackle house)
- I still prefer a physical disc to Origin (silly me) and those packs aren't in the base game

I bought the item packs for DA2 and used that content in every replay of the game so for me they were worth the cost. I have no interest in the item packs for DAI and wouldn't download them even if they were free. Bodypaintarmor and bikiniarmor is not something I want and to be honest I can't even remember when I played the game the last time.
Just waiting for some story DLC that I hope is better than JoH.

But in DAI case, I would buy hairstyles and casual clothes. But none of the actual packs have them, so are not interesting to me. And the armour aren't really of my taste.

I like new armor and weapons, so that why I will buy. I did buy the Avaar set, but I regret that purchase. I actually don't care for the armor and there were no weapons,. I don't use mounts, and don't care much about decorating. I understand the Qunari set also has no weapons, I do like the armor though.
I would purchase more armor, weapons, hairstyles, casual outfits, building/.repair items and anything that made the font bigger and easier to read. Would love some new body postures as well.... cringe at the way my pretty girl Quizzy walks like a lumberjack LOL.
