Fairly new poster. Love the game, of course - Very much the spiritual successor to the NWN series, and no, I've never played Oblivion or Baldur's Gate or Morrowind or any of those other RPGs that everyone else talks about.
On my 2nd playthrough right now. I guess you can call it 2nd, although I have like a billonty alts, but this is my 2nd getting past the Landsmeet. First was a male human noble. This one's a female human noble. I was doing some digging around on the wiki (dragonage.wikia.com - btw .. What's up with not being able to login and edit/discuss on there? Some javascript error or something)
Anyway. Yeah. (I ramble. Sorry) .. Landsmeet. Female human noble.
On my first run through I killed Loghain. Chopped off the bastard's head. After that, I got this dialogue where we got to decide who was going to be the ruler, etc etc. I'd already done the prep work before at Arl Eamon's estate and talked Alistair and Anora into marrying, so I was sort of surprised that I had to remind them of that fact, but in retrospect I can see that that gives you a way to back out and change your mind at the last minute. I hadn't hardened Alistair's personality on that run through, so he turned into the goofy kind of king. That's all good. That's the Alistair we like
I ran two endings that time - Did the mambo with Morrigan and saved myself, and then replayed and sacrificed myself. Alistair's eulogy was most moving. I love Steve Valentine.
So this time through I got my romances in the right order - Playing as female PC, so Leliana (hardened), then Zevran and ending up with Alistair, hardened. You know, if you get their approval levels all set up right beforehand, you can do all 3 of 'em in the same camp stay. Poor Wynne didn't know where to look!
Uh. I'm digressing again.
Yeah. Anyway, since I'm the female human noble, I figured I'd nail the last ending achievement I don't have yet and pick up the recruiter achievement while I was at it - Let Loghain live, induct him into the Wardens, then toss him at the dragon and run like hell.
What I -really- wanted though, was to do that -and- betray Anora (That is, promise to support her for Queen before the landsmeet, then ****slap her and support Alistair and nab the Queen-hood for myself)
Turns out you can't do this, am I right?
I haven't looked at the dialogue files in the editor yet (if you even can), but it would appear that there are two completely separate dialogue trees for how the post-landsmeet conversation runs.
1. If you take the decision yourself to kill Loghain (i.e. Say you're gonna kill him after the duel, then basically ignore what Riordan says and go ahead and kill him), then you get to choose who rules in a -separate- conversation after all that's dealt with. I haven't run that one with my female human noble yet, but I assume that's where you get the "I will rule by his side" option if you choose to support Alistair solely for the throne and kick Anora off.
2. But if you -don't- want to kill him, then obviously Alistair and Anora will argue about what to do with him, and (and this is the kicker), what you choose to do with Loghain implicitly (and explicitly) gives support to one of the two candidates right there and then. You get no 2nd conversational discussing who's going to wear the crown. You -can- persuade Alistair to marry Anora if he's hardended even if you leave Loghain alive (and you can do this without laying the groundwork for it prior to the Landsmeet. I don't know if it's due to high persuasion - I have level 4 coercion and 60-ish cunning), but you -can't- even attempt to persuade him to marry you. The question doesn't even come up. You either say "I support Anora as queen -and- let Loghain live" or "I support Alistair as King -and- kill Loghain" (or "You two should get married"), and then both Loghain and the succession question are dealt with. Boom, done.
My ideal ending here would be to recruit Loghain, toss him to the Archdemon, then marry Alistair and rule happily ever after, but I can't figure out how to do that. Has anyone managed that ending?
Well, technically speaking, my ideal ending here would be to kill Loghain, get Alistair the throne and marry him -before- the Archdemon fight, then toss -Alistair- to the archdemon and rule as his greiving widow, but I 'm guessing that's completely not possible, ha.
