It's being confused with stagnation, normally a percentage of humanity would be killed off due to harsh environment and natural predators. But since the birth of civilization these factors have diminished. At first it was fine because communication was slow and local, but as humanity became more and more connected, it grew further and further disgusted by itself, wired for the smaller groups of it's tribes so many millennia ago.
