I'll be surprised if we see Minrathous in its full glory ever, the city will likely fall to the Qunari soon anywyas so it may be a moot point regardless.

It's "glory" such as it is something you'd need time travel to see anyway.

That's exactly why I think we need to see it soon, so when it does it has more of an impact on the player.

Never said they were the better option.

You totally did, though.

I was choosing between the slaves and the Tevinter elite.

You misunderstood it as Tevinter vs Qunari.

Question out of nowhere.

Is the Tevinter Imperium based on the holy Roman empire?

I always thought so, Orlais being France, Ferelden> England, Anderfels> Germany

Tevinter would be Rome, as it conquered the known world

It's Byzantium.

It's Byzantium.

But that wouldn't make any sense, the Byzantine empire wasn't that grand compared to Rome, nor it conquered mass lands as the Roman empire did, and already lost all of it's Asian territories to the Umaya's empire, and Dorian seemed Italian more than Greek.

Unless if it confirmed or something?

Indeed, Val Royeaux was really sad.

I loved Kirkwall and seeing more cities like that (properly developed, of course) would be great.

This I think was in part due to the presence of this game on last gen systems. That isn't to say you can't have cities on them but they do restrict the number of NPCs and objects that can be rendered.

Former lead writer David Gaider has stated that the Tevinter Imperium is loosely inspired on the  roman empires, especially in its later Byzantine period

That's from the old forum where he was talking about inspiration for the various cultures and nations.

Given it's been in a constant downward spiral since the first blight it's as apt a comparison as any.

And yet Kirkwall was last gen and it actually sort of occasionally felt like a city abet not a living one.

The Imperium seems to steal everything from the Elven empire. Magic, culture, and even mimicking self-destruction.

It was bigger, absolutely, but as far as NPCs and population density not that different if at all.

Good to know that it's confirmed, though it's obviously represents the Roman empires

So it comes to how Minrathous looks, if it's by sea, then it should represent Istanbul/Constantinople as it straddling the Bosphorus strait between the sea of Marmara and the black sea.

If it's along a river, it would be Rome as it sits on the shore of the Tiber river.

And i wonder if they will represent the different races that lived in both the western/eastern Roman empires.

Elves are whiny losers, Humans rule supreme

Agree.

Minrathous is against the Nocen Sea, which connects to the Boeric Ocean.

Well it's closer to Istanbul than Rome, but could be both, Rome isn't far from the Mediterranean, but still not a coastal city, which Minrathous and Istanbul are.

Thedas draws inspiration from these places. They are not meant to be the same, I think similarities beyond aesthetics and language and sooooometimes history are primarily coincidental. Also, just an aside current Tevinter makes way more sense as Byzantium, the successor state of Rome, since it isn't as impressive as it used to be but is still an immense power. Also Constantinople was known for it's impressive defenses and was the gem of the medieval world. That's where Thedas diverts again, Minrathous still gives me the impressive and defensible vibe but not really the 'gem' vibe.

Aaanyway. That's not why I bumped this thread. The more I think about a game set in Tevinter/Minrathous right before the full weight of a the qunari war machine smashes into the more I love the idea. Or that might just be the coffee. But seriously, I wanna see Thedas' oldest magical society (add to that: living and mainstream) unleashed! No more stodgy Chantry restrictions! Cuz you just know the Chantry has other fires to put out and/or rekindle that they won't have the resources to keep Tevinter properly leashed. I wanna see Qunari in full armor. I wanna see epic and romantic displays of blood magic like Tirena of the Rock. I wanna see Minrathous under siege with Qunari dreadnoughts firing on its walls and its Juggernauts awoken to defend the city. I wanna be immersed in this [still] glorious, decadent culture so enamored with it's own declining power, I wanna be there when that power gets tested and I wanna see what they can become if/when it's broken.

And this isn't even touching getting to know the Qunari better and the ~secrets~  their ancestry holds that DAI keeps hinting at. Or how/if the Old Gods tie into all this new god-elf stuff we learned. Or the full story behind Tevinter's role in the decline of the elves. It's like all the games have been building up to this, the darkspawn, the old gods, the qunari, Andraste and the Maker, the magisters, the ancient elves and even the dwarves they all have some kind of connection to good old Tevinter. It's the nexus of so many threads.

SO. In conclusion: Bioware. Pls let me shove my face into some Tevinter goodness next. Make a DA2 but have it be actually decent.

I still have my money on the mighty Imperium to bring back that medieval dark theme to the game, the war with qunari should be fought by Tevinter alone, you describe it poetically and i hope it will be something like this, first Minrathous holds off the attack then the Imperium take the fight to the heart of par vollen( if we're lucky we'll witness some naval battles), and i don't want to have that war feeling just as cinematics i want to play it in game, a real war with hundreds of npcs everywhere, hopefully they'll return and improve the killing moves that were in DA:O, especially the double sword removing head that one was great.

Something like the war at Ostagar, but actually play it, not just watch a movie.

With any luck we'll have enough ground-beef to start a fast-food chain by the end of it  ^_^

Bioware screwed up Val Royeaux. I honestly doubt Minrathous will get a better treatment.

Ancient Tevinter, when it was in its prime, is based on the Roman Empire. For the modern day, it's based on the Byzantine Empire. With the war against the Qunari and its slow decline, seems like it makes sense to me.

(but then my ancient Roman history is VERY rusty)
