I'm kicking around the idea of making Vivienne Divine in my next game. Only, the last time I did I ended up with a bunch of dead rebel mages. Are there any happier epilogues, akin to Cassandra as Divine with templars and reformed Seekers or Leliana and free mages?

The best you're going to get is a Templar alliance with Cullen still using Lyrium, or disbanding them if you prefer they stay with the Inquisition.

Yes. Vivienne reforms the templars and keeps a tight leash on them to prevent abuses of power. She also extends mage freedoms in moderate order, which some even see as going too far. Also, if Cullen quit lyrium, some templars will choose to stay with the Inquisition and follow his example. So this provides freedom for the templars as well. This requires you to side with the templars to close the breach.

I've made Vivienne Divine a few times because I wanted to see how it played out in future installments.

All of the candidates for Divine have the potential to leave chaos in their wake, and that makes for an interesting game. Leliana promotes peace, but she keeps it through the force of her personality. If she were to die or become incapacitated, chaos will ensue. Cassandra is a reformer, but she's an idealist, and she isn't diplomatic enough to get everyone to play nice in the long term. It's quite possible that a charismatic rebel could topple her reign and chaos would ensue. Vivienne restores a system that led to the rebellion in the first place, so it's really only a matter of time before that goes boom. So, really, it's up to the writers. If they want Southern Thedas to be stable and peaceful, all the candidates have the potential to make that happen, but if they want to throw the region into turmoil again, all of the candidates have the potential to make that happen, too.

The choice of Divine may matter to players, but it doesn't really have much bearing on the future of the series. The writers can take it in any direction they want.

I don't follow.

Both mage endings (conscript & ally) end in her brutally crushing a rebellion, even if it ends up being for the best. If the OP is looking for an ending with a "smoother" transition, then you want Templar Conscription or Templar Alliance with Cullen continuing to use Lyrium.

If you get him (and the other Templars) to quit after offering an alliance, the Templars will reject the new Divine and strike out on their own, forming an independent faction called the Silver Shield. This is bad.

Despite Vivienne's other reason for joining the Inquisition, she is another alternative to Cassandra. They both have very similar ideals. I chose Vivienne as Divine in my last playthrough, because I was romancing Cassandra. I didn't want to lose her to the Chantry, therefore, I did not speak to her at all about about her opinion on the whole divine thing. Dialogues, choices, and just some normal talks that talk with these characters will either determine their total tally points. Whoever has the most in the end, will be divine. Luckily, I never knew about this tally system, but I always got the person I wanted to be divine in the end.

I have only chosen the Templar side, but for Elf playthrough, I may go for the mages.

And if you conscript the templars while encouraging Cullen to quit lyrium, some templars swear to the Chantry and some stop using lyrium and form their own order.

BTW, the Silver Shield is a total copycat of the Silver Order that can be established by the Hero.

Any explanation why they call themselves that? I know the Silver Order was named after Silverite...

Ally with the Templars:  Both the Order and the Circle are rebuilt.  Vivienne keeps a firm hand on the Templars and grants the mages far more independence as well as responsibility

Cullen overcomes lyrium addiction and Cassandra rebuilds the Seekers:  Many Templars follow Cullen's example and stop taking lyrium.  They form the core of the new Seekers

They both have "Silver" in the name... and I think that's about it.

Yeah, Vivienne as Divine isn't the happiest. Not only because of the potentially dead rebels, but also because no matter your choices she still has to put down three rebellions that try to dethrone her and cause Thedas to once again spiral into chaos.

That's even more dead rebels.

If the Inquisitor has a positive reputation with Vivienne, her rule stabilizes after a few months.

One does not simply put a someone with a horned hat in a position of significant power.

Conscript the templars and Cullen on Lyrium, make the truce in Halamshiral, alliance with the Wardens with the Senior Warden dead and Vivienne as Divine.
Happy ending right there.

Do they teach Thedas to sing in perfect harmony?

I had Vivienne as Divine three games in a row.  All three of those games had Celine still in power.  One of them I had the war table mission for her pop up.  The other two just happened even though I was actively trying to get Cass as Divine.  One of them was a templar conscription.  Of the other two both were mage conscription.  I don't remember what I did with the Grey Wardens on either of those two games.

Generally though since I am pro-mage and typically do a full mage alliance I get Cass or Leliana as Divine.  And I always try to soften Leliana.  Because hardened Leliana is just crazy.

Sadly, I don't think there's an answer, until Thedas recovers its fractured self.

Celene and conscripting mages are very pro-Vivienne choices when it comes to the election, and while conscripting the Templars does give Cassandra a small boost, allying with them gives her a really solid lead, as does putting Gaspard on the throne.
