So I have been trying to get some hard numbers here, and cannot deduce this myself, so I'm asking the mathematically inclined for some help:

With armour calculation, how is armour bonus applied?

For example:

A Legionnaire with T3 armour has 184 armour.

A Dwarven Proving Shield has 28 armour.

Adamant is supposedly a 20% armour bonus.

Trust The Steel is sort of a 20% bonus (Only with Guard, 20% of rear armour in the rear, 24% of rear armour in the front, after all other bonuses).

Based on that, is that math worked like this?

(Proven) Rear Armour w/ Adamant:

184 base * 1.2 adamant = 220 armour

Front Armour w/ Adamant:

(184 base * 1.2 adamant) + 28 shield = 249 armour

(Proven) Rear Armour w/ Adamant + Trust the Steel:

(184 base * 1.2 adamant) * 1.2 TtS = 264 armour

Front Armour w/ Adamant + Trust the Steel:

([184 base * 1.2 adamant] * 1.24 TtS) + 28 shield = 302 armour

If you have a serious response, and if this math is wrong, please include the correct math so I can understand. Thanks!

Are you sure that those passives works in multiplicative way?

Looking at all other passives, like those connected with barrier for example they tend to in general work in additive way.

so 184 * 1,4
and 184 * 1,44 + 28

Best way is probably just to test in game, fade "view" should show armor without shield I think (so rear one) or in Single player where we have stat screen.

I was basing that off aznricepuff's Combat Mechanics post, where he listed the formula for Trust the Steel as the follinwg:

Trust the Steel

  • [Bug - Patch 4] Armor bonus is not applied to front armor. [Fixed - Patch 5]
Armor bonus is:
  • front_armor_bonus = back_armor * 0.24
  • back_armor_bonus = back_armor * 0.20
back_armor: the current back armor value of the caster before the Trust the Steel bonus is applied, including any active temporary bonuses.

I've tested in single player, and my calculations seem to work, but I wanted a second (or third) opinion.

I know, but this thread presents only bonus from one passive, not how they stack with each other.
They can either stack in the way you listed (so multiplicative) or the way I listed (additive - (1 + 0.2 + 0.24).
Test is needed really, I can help if you want.

Exactly, which is why I am asking. I'll be online for a bit, so we can test it right now if you have the time.

From testing in game with Yarpen, it looks like my non-front armour ratings were correct (only rounded down): 220 armour with Adamant; 264 armour with Trust the Steel (only with Guard).

What I am not sure about is if Shield Armour is additive with armour rating before Adamant and Trust the Steel, or after those passives?

It would be nice if Luke could shed some light on that one since we can't view Front Armour rating in multiplayer... (hint: BW should add a stats screen in the next patch).

Armor bonus is:
front_armor_bonus = back_armor * 0.24
back_armor_bonus = back_armor * 0.20

Looking at this I would assume that all calculation are based on back_armor and front_armor is just a back_armor + shield...but only bioware knows how it works.

Yup, I'm thinking the same there. That's how I did my calculations in the OP. But, yes, you are right that only BioWare knows lol.

Can you try swapping to inquisition shield maybe and see how that affects the incoming damage?
