Hey guys I'm going to start a nightmare playthrough and am wondering which class would be better suited towards tackling all of its challenges. I realize once you get to skyhold these become trivial due to crafting, but I'm still curious as to which of the aforementioned classes would allow for a more enjoyable nightmare playthrough. Thank you all very much for your time and I hope to hear from you all soon.
W&S Warrior or Mage for Nightmare? (No KE)

is the weapon and shield playstyle any good this game? I tried out 2h and it was so boring and clunky.

Since you don't want Knight Enchanter, stay away from Champion. It's to guard what Knight Enchanter is to barriers. That leaves Reaver, Templar, Rift Mage, and Necromancer.
What exactly do you dislike about 2-handed combat?

I dislike the way it has very few gap closers and broken combination abilities. For example if an enemy is frozen and you use mighty blow on him it should cause a shatter for massive damage, however for some reason whenever you use mighty blow on a frozen enemy it shatters for 1 damage. Also on nightmare 2h warriors simply don't have enough survivability due to their lack of defensive abilites. Arrows alone could take you down before you reach the enemy archers. I've never tried KE but the reason I'm hesitant to use it is because of how broken everyone is making it out to be.
Edit: I don't really mind the barrier mechanic itself it's just the complaints from everyone about it being far too broken that pushes me away. If the guard mechanic is engaging and interesting I wouldn't mind trying it out. Although I heard playing as a tank is not the best option since the ai can handle tanking adequately while it is pretty crap at dealing damage. Not to mention being the tank would make it more difficult to disrupt rifts.

The shatter bug was fixed in one of the patches. Although, since then it maybe crept it's way back in. Here's my take on the Warrior W&S vs 2H.
W&S: I liked the interactive feel, and combat roll really made it shine. However, I really started to feel the grind later as I could rarely hit few targets.
2H: Once mighty blow detonator was fixed, this was golden for me. I loved the clang of block and slash, and the AoE was sublime to say the least. I ended up trying out both champion and templar 2H. In the end I went 2H Templar. The damage from the wrath/purge combo is just awesome. I can't tell you how much fun I had from it.
As for closers, After level 7 or so, I rarely used lunging strike from the W&S tree. I ended up using Charging Bull for both of them as a closer. What makes Charging Bull so awesome, was that it sets up your next ability to be free (once upgraded). So I use it to prime mighty blow, etc.
Or, if you prefer you can get upgraded Chain so that you pull them to you, they fall down, and then use mighty blow. It isn't a detonator, but the bonus damage from the target being on the ground is just awesome!
I think I went W&S until Skyhold and then swapped out for 2H once I had a decent crit rate to lean on.

Warriors are both good and for me they are the easiest classe pre-skyhold.
I can't understand the hate for the 2handed one; it gives a lot of cc (vital pre-skyhold), can use the chain and raging bull to close gaps and can do a lot of damage as reaver or templar (the two specs I tried). Mighty blow is not bugged anymore.
[upgraded chain + mighty blow is the funniest combo in the game for me!]

2H Reaver. No other warrior build can match the DPS, and as the poster above me stated, grappling chain and charging bull are wonderful gap-closers.

I love putting hidden blade masterwork on a 2H weapon.

Rift mages can put out the highest magical DPS in the game with the correct combination of passives. They can have an almost non-existent barrier cooldown and lastly, they have no mana issues while being able to crush any and all groups of mobs.
As for single target DPS. They're mid-high tier. Just because you can spam low cool-down spells one after the other while using stone fist as a "filler" spell.

Flip a coin to pick one for this run, then play the other one on your next run. ![]()

I don't know about that. I guess it depends on how you constrain the comparison. Are we talking single target DPS or AoE DPS? Peak DPS or sustained DPS? With or without detonator combos? Size of nearby mob and/or number of melee attacks on the caster?
KE + Energy Barrage + passives is pretty high up there for a single target, peak DPS, particularly if there are nearby melee enemies that trigger Veiled Riposte or that make Decloaking Blast an option.
Granted, my 26th level Rift Mage can spam Stonefist with just a second or two of cooldown and no mana limitation, and that's getting into the ridoncolous range for DPS, but KE's can reach or exceed that range, under the right conditions.

I agree. I think the only place Rift Mage shines is on AoE. My KE was able to fuel her fire mine with her barrier and do tremendous damage to a few targets, far surpassing that of my rift mage. I was never very happy with the rift mage though.

Right, I forgot about Fire Mine + Chaotic Focus + KE passives. That's sick damage, with knock back and DoT!I agree. I think the only place Rift Mage shines is on AoE.
