Do you choose your mount based on your character's race, or whatever you feel like?

I go by race. Noble human, has a horse as its tarot card? Definitely gets a horse, whiter the better to match the tarot card. Elf? Hart, it's seemingly related to halla and is a very forest feeling animal. Qunari and dwarf? Dracolisk, both qunari and dwarves are very tough and hardy and not really right looking on furrier and softer animals.

Unrelated, sorta, but... How the hell does a dwarf realistically even get on their mount? They come up to their knees, or maybe slightly higher like mid thigh? Seriously, how do they not need to carry around a little step ladder to get up on it?

edit: Actually, the giant nug mount also strangely fits dwarves .

The dwarf should've gotten a hog.

But I think I agree with this list. I wouldn't really use anything but a horse for the human, and the giant nug does seem like something a dwarf would ride, since they're all about those things.

I go by race and background for mounts as well as armor and other things. For example, it would feel wrong for me to wear the Grey Warden armor on any character that was not a Warden. Despite the niceness of the armor we get in the DA2 Legacy DLC, I've never worn it for that reason, nor would I have a mage wear that weird Chantry looking robe.

Yeah, based on race. Hart for the elves, white horse for my noble, and the giant nug for my qunari since it looked the most fitting.

All of my Inquisitors ride horses due to personal preferences but I do choose specific colours for each race.

Any of them will ride any of the bonus horses however, meaning item pack ponies, digital edition horse etc, need to get some use out of those. If not on a 'bonus' steed they ride:

Humans: Free Marches Ranger or Amaranthine charger (because free marcher, and I like the black horse for the noble rather then the white)

Elves: Green Dales Feral or Orlesian Courser (an appaloosa and a more elegant grey/roan type horse I thought both fit my elves)

Dwarf: Ferelden Forder (I see my lone dwarf as rather stubborn and very likely to stick with the first horse she's given)

Qunari: Anderfel Courser (I thought the skewbald coat fitted my lone Qunari's personality)

My humans are always fascinated by elven culture and prefer Harts. I don't play the other races.

Due to the positive reviews, I may try an elven female though someday.

This is very convenient, as I personally like the Harts the most and my characters are some extension of my views.

I rode the Red Hart largely because I paid for the special edition and it was the only thing that I ended up liking out of the dlc stuff. So I'm gonna ride this thing all over the place because I paid extra money for this crap and gonna get my moneys worth dammit.

I never use a mount, 'cause real manly men walk.

I choose based on overall personality and background, so race is a factor but not the only one.

My Cadash Inquisitor never really took to a mount until she got her first nuggalope. After that, she became the devoted owner of a magnificent Tiddles Majoris and spent much of her spare time at the stables feeding him sugar cubes, apples, worms and rocks. (Nugs are true omnivores after all.)

My Adaar Inquisitor favoured the Red Hart - it was strong enough to carry him, it had antlers as magnificent as his horns, and was gentle under its intimidating exterior, just like the Inquisitor.

Trevelyan stuck with the Banded Charger. Nothing exotic or fancy for her, just a fine horse appropriately armored for battle.

And now I'm playing a Lavellan who is fascinated by Spirits, the Fade and Necromancy ... so naturally she loves the Bog Unicorn. I'm pretty sure that the reason all her companions disappear as soon as she mounts up is that they're frightened of it. Or trying to get away from the overwhelming smell of peat and dead horse.

I actually give them a mount based on their character (their personality, as well as their race, possibly by gender too). My first character switched between ones I liked, since they were equally useless and 'cause none truly worked better for him, than any of the others. Also felt compelled to use the Bog Unicorn because it came with the version of the game.

I do not use a mount, so I just stick with the one Master Dennet provides.

I do not want to miss out on any banter. It seems when you mount up, your followers forget where you are and even normal, area specific banter, does not trigger as a result.

Same sort of thing happened in Origins, especially in Orzammar. Each area had companions commenting...Dust Town, Diamond Quarter, etc. if you switched party members while there, those comments disappeared.

I only have one character, but he's riding a moose. When I first saw it, I knew it.

In a game with majestic horses and mysterious dragon creatures, of course I'm riding a ****ing moose.

Trivia: His name is also Robert.

I prefer to go by the character. Most of my characters have some backstory or general characteristics, which also play in what mounts they ride and how often.

Long ramble in the spoilers.

I work my way to the big nug, and then stick with it.  I never seem to get knocked off of it, and I've never taken the riding perks.

The neighing of the dracolisks sounds too artificial, and the bleating of the harts hurts my ears.  Granted, the nug doesn't sound much better.

Same. I'll get on the one that Master Dennet first gives you, but after that I walk. The horses are barely faster and all your companions disappear, plus I'm a compulsive forager. If I can pick it or dig it up, I will. Dismounting and remounting each time would take up most of my game time.

For the most part, my Dalish get Harts- unless I make a necromancer, in which all necromancers get the bog unicorn.  Or maaaybe a dracolisk.

Other then that, it's mostly chance.  I have had most of my humans on horses, but if a concept seems to go elsewhere, I'll go with it.

Dwarves and Qunari I just choose what I think that character would think is cool.  I sometimes like to go lorey and not use mounts at all with my Qunari, because it's said the vitaar can be deadly if touched and hell, with all the bouncing and jumping off cliffs my character's face might hit the mount!  That would suck.

...It's not a big deal though, as the only place I really use mounts is in the moonlit desert area.  Eh.

Only ever rode the one horse.   You jump on... do the races, then dismount and never get on anything else the rest of the game.

For some characters. My default mount (and the mount I use for 6 out of my 11 Inquisitors) is the Inquisition Barded Charger. Great design, I'm a sucker for mounts in armor.

My Human Male Noble Templar is very proud of his Free Marcher origins, and he uses the Free Marcher Ranger. It's compliments the fact that the horse is white and my character's armor colors are white and silver. A shining Knight, literally.

All of my Elves use Halla mounts. Specifically, the Royal Sixteen that represents clan Lavellan.

My Male Dwarf Warrior uses a War Nug. Had to be done. It's incredibly hilarious to see two stocky beings decked out in heavy armor awkwardly galloping across a battlefield. Many laughs were had during that playthrough.

That's about it. Never dug the Dracolisks or the Unicorns. Tried to use a Dracolisk during one of my Qunari playthroughs but my characters looked as though they were crushing the poor being. As I said, Inquisition Barded Charger is my favorite of all the mounts, and most of my characters default to it.

What ever fits to the character, but race has to do with that too. Hart for proud Dalish, nice horse for noble human and so on.

I don't really use mounts because I want to get banter, but I always choose the Inquisition Charger because it looks the coolest and doesn't make an annoying sound.
