Do you choose your mount based on your character's race, or whatever you feel like?

It's all about personality. I decide on a whim that my quizzy gets along well with someone. The dork grows fond of whatever seems silliest choice, and the pretentious dork gets cool looking steed... (This is why I try to keep away from multiplayer?) But background seems to affect in the way that they typically pay more attention on type of animals they haven't often seen before. (I like my dorks to be curious.) So I guess my system is kinda opposite kind.

Usually I just walk. But riding is handy when your done with harvesting herbs.

I usually walk as well.  Not a big fan of mounts and, frankly, don't really need to see them continue in the series.

That being said, I do pick a mount for each character.  It's not totally based on race, but it certainly didn't hurt when I bought my battlnug for my first dwarf.

I went with a halla (can't remember which one; I think a purplish color maybe?) for my canon quizzie because he is a qunari (two handed warrior) and I liked the horn on horn action happening there.

Went with a battlenug for male dwarf dual wield rogue.

Went with an armored horse for my female dwarf ranged rogue.

Not sure what I'm going to do for my male dwarf sword/board warrior.  Maybe a basilisk?  I'll play around a pick something that works well for him.

Hmm.  I'm surprised how many people don't use mounts.  I'd fall asleep crossing the Hissing Wastes on foot.  Plus mounts let you jump higher and fall as far as you want without injury.  I also find them useful when I'm crossing areas I've already explored, and to keep the party's idiotic following behavior from intruding on challenging terrain.  Mounting/dismounting will also bring all errant party members back to your side.

I rarely ride a mount either in the game. The one exception is in the hissing wastes when I'm making a dash for the merchant and not worrying about looting, picking flowers etc.

I used a mount for two things; the races and for cheating up or around blockages to get shards or mosaics (glances at the Hinterlands). I set the mount to the Inquisition Charger and never switched until I got a nuggalope, even then I eventually switched back to the Charger... was too used to the visual.

I tried to use a hart for my Dalish, but it just felt odd, she was this tiny thing on top an enormous hart making odd (to me) sounds. So I decided to go with what looks good, and my Lavellan was very happy with her white Imperial Warmblood.

But yeah, she only uses it in the Hissing Wastes.

Yeah, I tried using a hart for my elves but I couldn't get over that friggin' honking.

What ever suits my mood at that time. Usually dracolisk (though I wish I could ride a 'giant' Halla instead of a Hart...)

It's pretty rare for my characters to actually use the mounts. About the only time they do is during area cleanup when they're picking up stray Codex entries/bottles/etc. But on the rare occasions when I do forgo party banter for expedience, their race is only one consideration.

My last character, a Trevelyan mage, used the Imperial Warmblood because she looked good on it. A previous character was a qunari who was very conscious of his size, so he rode a hart because it was the only kind of mount he deemed sturdy enough to take his weight.

I use them based off my race because RP.... But then again I think I've used mounts like... 2 times. They are cool and all but it's too bad your whole squad disappears and there is no party banter. Those are huge NO's for me.

I don't choose based on race. I like fun mounts.

My Trevelyan mage loved his velociraptor. But he was romancing The Iron Bull, maybe that's why. Before discovering the velociraptor (I don't remember the name), he'd usually ride the bog unicorn.

I read somewhere that the sturdier the mount the less likely you are to be thrown, or you can ride through more stuff.  I rarely use them, and when I do I want to plow through stuff.

It's hard to get knocked off the Inquisition mount.  I just go with ease of getting to next thing if I'm going to bust out a mount.

Since I mainly only play Elves, I usually pick Harts. Partly because they're more suited to the race and partly cause I think they look adorable. (bonus: the sound the Hart makes when you get it to gallop ehehe it's like RRRRNNG)

Although, because I play only Elves, I sometimes switch it up a bit and ride other mounts, mainly Nugs, ehehe cause Nugs are cute.

I always go with Battle Nugs no matter what race/class. I didn't choose the nug life, the nug life chose me.

I normally go by personality then background.

My Lavellan spent time bonding with the horse Dennet gave her and adjusting her riding habits to a horse rather than a halla so she sticks with the Fereldan Forder until her clan sends the Royal Sixteen.

My rogue Trevelyan has no preference, she'll go to the stables and pick whatever horse is available.

Mage Trevelyan likes the weird ones, Tiddles, Sharp-Tail and the spirit horses are his favourites. He swaps them around depending on where he's going.

I go by race and background for mounts as well as armor and other things. For example, it would feel wrong for me to wear the Grey Warden armor on any character that was not a Warden. Despite the niceness of the armor we get in the DA2 Legacy DLC, I've never worn it for that reason, nor would I have a mage wear that weird Chantry looking robe.

Same, I don't like wearing faction armour when my character isn't one of them or it's a game with a disguise mechanic.

It's a shame because I really liked the look of the warden mage armour in DA2 and DAI.

I generally only use the Fereldan Forder if I use a mount at all.  Because I don't feel like wasting money on other mounts - I think I use a mount on the race mission and maybe if I'm trying to cover ground in the Wastes because I'm pressed for time.  Sometimes I'll do that war table mission to get the Hunter Shade, which is kind of creepy looking with those sharp pointy teeth.  Looks like it is always smiling evilly.  One game I did buy all the mounts and got the war nugs and whatnot.  There was an all black horse whose name escapes me.  But I used it.

I don't really use mounts that much either, mostly because I can't hear any banter if I ride mounts. But when I do, I mostly choose harts since I mostly play elves and the harts remind my quizz of home. However, sometimes I ride the Bog Unicorn so I can play this song while riding it.

I honestly try to rp it out and keep in character to what I think my character would ride but then I always default to the ones I think are the cutest.
