You don't want more than 2 melee characters. You need a tank warrior and a mage. Your last character can be an archer or a second mage. I like the second mage because they can set up more cross-class combos for me and because mages OP. Companion specializations in this game don't even matter. Everything you actually need if available in the core trees, so you can use whomever you like. If their specialization is not good for the role you're using them in, then just ignore it. For instance, Iron Bull works fine as a sword and shield tank with a pile of vanguard and a splash of battlemaster. That said, if you want optimal, I would say:

Tank options: Shield Blackwall, Shield Cassandra, 2H Blackwall, Shield Bull.

The best rogues and mages will depend on your own specialization and build. If you have a lot of detonators, take 2 mages for twice the freezes and paralyzes. Solas->Vivien->Dorian for combo setup. If you use the passive that gives free crits against sleep or panic, it's Dorian-Solas-Vivien. Dorian has tons of panic and Solas has tons of weakness. Adding shock turns weakness into sleep. (technically you could put sleep skills on another rogue, but don't do that; it's bad).

If you are an Artificer, take Varric as your rogue. You'll buff each other's crit chance. Then stack crit chance items on the whole party and you both get tons of stamina and CC. Use 2-handed blackwall as your warrior (for the critical passives) and put flashpoint on your mage.

If you are an assassin, taking Cole (as an archer) is fun because his focus skill stealths you. Really though, take whatever rogue you want.

If you're a tempest, you can pretty much bring whoever you like. Your skills don't synergize with anything specific. You can freeze people yourself sometimes which I guess makes freeze/paralyze less important, which would make Dorian less bad? Using Flask of Fire during Haste would be hilarious so I guess that's the best combo.

This is rather "old fashioned" advice. You don't "need" any of those things. People solo Nightmare with every class.

It's also rather odd to say that specializations don't matter. Sure, the base trees are plenty strong after mid level, but that doesn't mean that specializations are irrelevant. For example, for boss battles where a quick kill is the best defense for squishier party members, Thousand Cuts and Rally are awesome to have on hand. And then there are the specialist skills, like Veilstrike and Mark of Death, that would be silly to ignore or leave out of a party. And I haven't even mentioned the passives that buff the entire party ...

You CAN solo the game with any specialization, any class, with any combination.  Considering that the game, at it's base, is driven by random numbers, it is possible to beat the game blindfolded, drunk, and playing the game with toothpicks.

However, I have always coupled "best party" with that which is most efficient.  Efficiency means less down time, smoother gameplay, etc.  Minimizing melee will definitely improve efficiency due to the nature of AoE.  Bear aoe, giant aoe, dragon aoe...blah blah blah.  For this reason, ranged companions often require less micromanagement.

Before I discovered that warriors can, many times, open locked doors on their own, I would always run with 1 warrior tank, 1 archer, 1 support mage, and my character.  Now I will often replace that archer with any ranged companion of my choice, often for banter purposes.  But it's still ranged.

It is best to have every race in your party so that when you encounter an elven ruin or so you get more dialogue? I can't always seem to get them all there.

Ugh, but that means I have to bring Solas most of the time.  I can't stand him!

Solas is content to paint Skyhold in all my games because I never take him anywhere unless it is on his personal quest.  As soon as I get Vivienne I switch to her and as soon as Dorian is available I switch to him as my second mage (since I usually mage).

Most of your companions are human so is it best to roll your main character as an elf?

Unless you are an extreme story completionist (must hear every line of dialogue possible), it kind of doesn't matter that much. You get a few extra or different lines of dialogue here and there, that's it.

One place where it does matter, though, is if you want to romance Solas. That only works for exactly one race. Cullen is similar, but he'll accept one of two.

Don't get me wrong, Solas the character is a liar, a meddler (an ineffective one at that), and a damned selfish arse, but I think my run time with him is higher than any other companion, with the possible exception of Cass. I've become addicted to Veilstrike and Stonefist. Even when I ran a Rift Mage myself, I still had Solas in the party, though I would swap him out for Dorian for some quests.

I'll have to try a no-Solas run to see what it's like. Weird!

Without Solas you don't have to listen to his infinite knowledge every 5 minutes.

It's funny we all have our favorite companions for various reasons - pure utility, banter, personality.  My default team when I mage is Cass Sera and Dorian. That was basically my team for my nightmare PT.  I find that I have to really force myself to use some companions (Cole,.. but mostly because AI sucks with him and my preference is to only micromanage my inquisitor).  Solas.  I never take Blackwall anywhere.  He's a great tank.  I just don't care for him.  I didn't even really like him any better when I had my inquisitor romance him (and that was on my first PT before I knew about him). In general I'm willing to have someone who is "weaker" in my party (like Iron Bull) if I like them.  He's hilarious.  I guess I'm much more into team dynamics than utility.  But in my mind Dorian in perfect and he is always besties with all of my Inquisitors.  Even with his hipster stache.

The antidote to that is to have Sera in the party.
