New fantasy show coming out in January. Based on the second Shannara book (Elfstones of Shannara) by Terry Brooks. Brooks being my favorite author, I can't wait to see this. The cast looks great too.

Shannara? Isn't that the lazy LOTR ripoff?

Yawn.

The first book, yes. The 20 something other books, not at all. Hence why they start with book 2.

I kinda lost track of the Shanara books after it started going steampunk but Elfstones was far and away the best of the series. Probably the best story Brooks wrote except maybe Running With theDemon.

I would not have imagined John Rhys-Davies as Eventine, however. Or any elf really.

If this is a success, they might do Wishsong of Shannara, next year. That would mean MTV would suddenly be showing music again.

Oh, wow, really? I dropped it after not liking the first book when I was a teen way back when. Sounds like that wasn't the right call.

It's not just you. Shannara nearly put me off fantasy novels. And it's not just the first, I read the first 3 to be sure. Luckily the next series I read was the Belgariad.

You don't have to read all of them. Mostly there are trilogies or stand alone books. You can start with whatever book you want, really. It skips a few hundred years between the stories. All new characters. Kind of like Dragon Age, almost. More about the world.

Woah, I hadn't heard about this and it looks pretty good. Crixus from Spartacus is playing Allanon so I'm really interested now. So is each season a different book? My favorite character from the books was always Walker Boh, I guess it would be a few seasons if we see him in the show than. Hopefully it won't turn out to terrible since it's on mtv.

Didn't read this one but I read four other of his book as a teen. They were pretty good, at least I thought so back then.

What was so terrible about the first book?

I never jumped into that series, so just wondering.

Massive, massive LOTR rip-off.

Oh I dunno, I kinda liked them back in the day. They were pretty good as cover bands go.

It still wasn't a bad book. The story was enjoyable and the writing decent. It was just utterly lacking in any form of creativity.

Didn't capture my interest.

But hopefully it is good, so that fans (and others that will watch it) will be pleased.

Oh it wasn't.  (at least it wasn' t back in high school when I first read it)

But yeah it wasn't what one would call original.
