I can see that I haven't registered ME3 with my account but I'm still able to post in the ME3 forums. Same is the case with Dragon Age: Inquisition. Is this supposed to happen? Also, how/when did I register the ME2 game? Does it get registered automatically if I download a demo or free DLC?

You don't have to register a game to be able to post in those forums. I am also able to post in Dragon Age 1 and 2 forum without having them registered. And I can't answer your second question, mine got registered automatically when I bought them on my account. I think you have to connect your account when the game asks for it (Usually first time you start it up).

Those thumbnails happen automatically if you connected a game (Only DA and Mass Effect) to your Origin account.

That BSN page refers to the old forums that were hosted on the social.bioware.com site. These forums use a different system to check what games you own.

The current posting rules allow you to post in any DA board if you own any DA game and any ME board if you own ME board. There might be a few exceptions to that rule... and some categories also allow anyone to post, usually the general discussion sections.
