So I just read this book the other day, and I am confused. The book is all about the conflict between Celene and Gaspard, with Briala acting as Celene's closest agent and lover. But in the end Briala figures out that Celene had killer her parents when they were teenagers in order to evenutally take the throne. Briala leaves and Celene and Gaspard are both left alive to keep fighting for the throne of Orlais. However in Inquisition, it is a mandatory quest to resolve this fight for the throne while at the ball. You can actually kill one of Gaspard or Celene but either way it is resolved. Given that I would assume the game takes the role as canon, is The Masked Empire just a different, non canonical, version of what happens in Orlais? This may seem obvious but it has bothered me since I completed the book. Personally, when I played the game, I had Gaspard killed and I brought Celene and Briala back together. Obviously this would completely contradict the ending of the book.

The events of the book happen before DAI.

Thanks for the reply. I am currently replaying the game, but from what I remember, how would we get Briala and Celene back together if Briala actually left the way she did? It seemed pretty final in the book. It may seem obvious after I play the game again, having read the book this time around. Thanks again

It seems to me that at the end of book they still very much love each other as they both say their hearts will ache with every second they are apart. Briala cares much for elves so much that she is willing to risk their relationship. I played as an elven inquisitor so to me the decision makes sense. I believe in the end it says something about Celene being very much influenced by the inquisitor. So for me in the end it works out. The lovers are reunited and Briala is still is able to help the elves with an elven inquisitors influence and Brialas obvious influence with Celene. That's why it's so hard for me to play as any other race, the elven inquisitor seems to make so much sense with the storyline. My big question at the end of the book was who killed Felassan? My therory is Fen’Harel. At the end he says something to the effect of as much as you may hate this she reminds me of.... And then dies. Knowing what we know of Briala she is very smart and cunning, almost tricky. Who else did he admire so much in the book? All his stories are of the great Fen’Harel. I don't know could just be me mindlessly babbling but to me it makes sense.
