How important are promotions for Nightmare runs?

Hey everyone!

I've been getting back into MP after taking a couple of weeks off and have been putting some time into it, promoting here and there. I've finally got some pretty good gear for my favorite class and Perilous runs are getting pretty comfortable if I'm in a good group.

So with the new patch coming out, I thought I'd give Nightmare a try. On my first run we wiped out in zone two or three, I think, and in my next try we failed in the first one. My stats are 11/19/11 and I was wondering how important those are in terms of survivability versus stats of gear and teamwork.

I enjoy playing as Keeper the most, so trying to level up the other classes just to get better stats would be a bit of a grind, but I'd be willing to put some time into that if it's needed for smooth Nightmare runs where I wouldn't need to be carried by other, more experienced players.

Barrier was nerfed in the patch, so it's not the be-all and end-all anymore. So yes, promotions and gear are very important.

Thanks for the reply! Is there any sort of base level of stats like 20/20/20 or something similar that should be achieved before heading back into Nightmare? Or should there be a bigger focus on one of the stats?

Depends. If you're pugging, you want way higher than that. I have 115 promotions and I struggle with Nightmare. If you're with a group who are really good, communicate and complement each other, you might be able to do it (even if it takes hours) with low promotions. Oh and generally, the best attribute to get is cunning. Has the highest benefit across the board up to a point.

Not essential, but they sure do make things run much more smoothly.

They change some builds and kits from being nearly unwinnable or struggling to absolutely dominating, however there are are a number of builds that allow you to succeed if you play in a coordinated fashion with other players.

Stats can and will make the game a lot easier, but you can still fail though. Keep on promoting your characters, but don't think that stats are absolutely required. I bring new players in, and just yesterday I taught a player to successfully Tank NM as a Legionaire with Counterstrike, Walking Fortress, Shield Bash and To the Death over the course of a few matches. He had stats lower than yours, but I'd take him over pugs any day, as he played his role solidly.

Some of those builds are found here:

http://forum.bioware...rite-mp-builds/

I particularly recommend playing Chaotic Fire Mine Elementalist to begin with, or Destruction field Keeper. These control builds allow a lot of breathing room to win matches with.

Finding, befriending, and playing with players willing to coordinate in a useful fashion is the most difficult part.

Thanks! I've actually been using your "Go to sleep!" build ever since I found it weeks ago. Will try out the Destruction Field build next time I promote her.

Now to find a group on PC to play and coordinate with.

They're important in that they dramatically reduce completion time and broaden your class and build options. I'd say they make for a more enjoyable game as a result, personally. The rest of the advice in this thread is sound.

Stats are not essential. My stats are just around 30/30/30 ish. Making friends is definitely the best thing to do for a newbie and myself got carried a good number of times by those over promoted elites. My impression was that most of them are quite happy to carry you if you ask nicely, provided if you know what you suppose to do and take advice. The example drasca gave above is a good one.

As for a underpromoted scrub like me and you, just try to stay alive is the most helpful thing to do when you play with those elites. I got the impression that their high stats kind of encouraged them to take a way more "aggressive" approach and like to just charge in and kill everything where as if you try to learn from them and do the same, well, you are dead in moment's notice. So try to ask for advice or look around the forum for guides and that sort.

patch 1.09 made things so much easier for difficulties up to perilous than it was, but as for nightmare, even though I have all the top gears I need, i still find it a huge struggle simply due to my low stats making me so fragile compared to those elites. Oh, and not dealing enough damage fast enough.

I had a Perilous match recently where it was only me and an archer, but we finished up the zones rather quickly and I only died once we were in the last zone. I think we even had the Venatori as enemies. Was pretty happy to not be completely dead weight. Later saw that the other player was in the top 30 of the leaderboard, so it's no wonder we managed to pull through.

They were not impirant pre nerf. Now they are, since enemies spawn directly in your LoS and occasionally on top of you due to some poorly implemented balance changes.

My opinion is based off playing NM with 3 highly skilled and heavily promoted players.

I am in the 30/30/30ish range. No one on the team was running a barrier class and they tended to fight out in the open because they weren't concerned about the damage. The only times I survived was when I played keeper and then legionaire.

My thinking is that if you had a moderate level of promotions and a team that was balanced and everyone played as a team you would be able to clear with some difficulty.

I certainly am concerned about the damage... the damage I do to enemies. I want them all in one place so they die faster, so I line of sight and have the entire team do so in order for the enemy to clump up and get absolutely destroyed. Spawn camping across the map isn't very effective anymore, so why not both save ourselves some damage and do more damage to the enemy with our AoE abilities? We do pop out of LoS occasionally to wipe the enemy clumps but return in order for the newly spawned enemies to clump up again.

Works best with a Legionaire CS Taunting everything in LoS then WF as he's about to take damage, refilling his cooldowns. One other Control build is nice to have around too.

CS is absolute trash on NM. Total waste of a skill slot.

depends on the map, but I found hiding just inside doorways was the best thing to do it forces everything to clump In the doorway and then it stands there to get dps spammed, I don't have that large a number of promotions (below 30/30/30) but I was able to solo nm before the weekend on my lego (which I was surprised about)

I found that when the weekend event went live my promotions dropped by 5 across the board (which is fairly common and seems to happen most weekends) I pushed hard this weekend and promoted rangers 5 times, mages 4 times and melee 2 times, this morning I was back to 25/25/20 (I started at 32/28/25 on Friday morning which dropped to 25/23/20 when the event started) it makes me not want to bother promoting more than a few times a month despite the huge bonus promotions can give since they keep jumping about .........I'm sure the problem is related to the connection problems with the server which at times make the game totally unplayable but it certainly doesn't make me want to play that often /

Er...have you brought that to Bioware's attention? I think I'd abandon the game if I regularly lost days worth of playtime every week to the ether. That's crazy.

Also, I'd really like to see that solo 30/30/30 Lego NM completion. That'd be an entertaining watch.

it was a bugged lvl 20 lego, for some reason despite me not promoting I logged in to find a lvl 3 lego with all the skills and I was getting it back to lvl 20 just so I could clear the bug, for a laugh I decided to try a nm solo took about an hour but I popped lvl 20 :)

since the double xp ended I haven't been able to drop into a single pug but I can host, problem is I cant host private games and everytime someone joins I get insta gibbed like i'm a playing the starter character ....... no doubt some kind of bug related to people without the patch joining mid game, the real problem is that the weapons similarly revert in active abilities to doing the same damage as the starter staff and stop procing the abilities, so instead of killing the mobs in a couple of hits while they wail on me I  get one shot from full health .......that's now making me feel like not playing at all

I use CS all the time on NM o.o we don't have to take barrier classes because I'm soaking up damage the whole time, they finally brought the cool down from 60-45 seconds and it's awesome now. There's a bug at the moment which is causing the cool down amulet to not work with it but apart from that CS is a great skill. Its taunt radius is huge as well, it doesn't grab everything 100% of the time but you can use it so often now it really doesn't matter :P

Translation Pork is a doesn't know how to CS on FC NM. CS went from pretty awesome (before everyone got great gear and easy defenses in Perilous) to trashy as tanking became less useful (when burst DPS killed everything, and CS's functionality changed), back to awesome again as NM high health and enemy count + guard buffs make tanking useful again.

^ This. I don't know if the cooldown actually got reduced yet though. The taunt cd's were supposed to be reduced last week but weren't implemented.

I always liked CS but haven't used it in a while. I don't play lego much. The times recently I have played with other players that had it, I always appreciated the huge range mega taunt it does and it always seemed to make the run go more smoothly. I unno, I was just curious what Pork's reasoning for saying that was because I see plenty of success from it mostly on FC zone 3 and 4.
