They were always red in the previous Dragon Ages.

Why are they green now?

Is this another #lolEABioWareretconn?

Or are there any specific lore reasons for this?

It's green now, because everything's green as of Inquisition.

Red was too mainstream :P

No seriously.

It really annoys me.

This should be explained in-game.

If I were to speculate a guess then the change of color would be due to the change of ingredients used in the recipes. The previous recipes has only had distilled elfroot as an ingredient in their health potions while the Inquisition recipe has elfroot and dawn lotus as ingredients. The combination of the two likely results in the different color. The improved recipe in Inquisition also requires no elfroot, instead only using embrium and prophet's laurel for ingredients.

This. You expanded more than I would have. I was only going to post, "Because elfroot." >.>

Another likely reason is that the color red in DAI is heavily associated with corrupted Lyrium and.... Red Templars.

Also, the color red in previous games was used because it's the generic color used for health in general.

Green is traditionally the color of vitality and healing in most games, even in DAO and DA2. Just look at the color of the creation spells and trees.

If anything, the potion has been green all along since Bioware has made an effort to realize their true vision fit the series much like the Qunari and elf updates to being physically distinctive from humans.

^ The health bar next to the portrait is green as well, unlike DAO and DA2 where it was red. They should also have made the hotbar icon green (thanks Silky Goodness for the reminder), then it would all be consistent.

... OK, now I have to go see if I can find the icon and make a mod to change it to green. I have a habit of making nit-picky mods...

Because the health bar is now also green, whereas it was red in Origins and DA:2

The internet can't decide! Is this potion Red/Green or Pink/Purple?! Scientists blame it on poor quality of the picture and the correction function in our eyes!

I think having them green makes sense, because healing effects are green, and the spirit school of magic is green too.

The red potion vials' glass is saved up in order to fabricate thermal clips for bizarre crossbows in the future.

Unless I'm mistaken, the bottles in the supply crates that replenish your health potions are still red.

So I'm gonna be that guy girl and point out that, technically, the red ones were poultices in DAO, not potions. And we never saw the color of the potions in DA2, I don't believe. just a red heart icon.

And the reason it changed to green potions and healthbars is cus green was the big color with this game. Basically. *shrug*

Unless I'm mistaken, the bottles in the supply crates that replenish your health potions are still red.

Those might be jars of poultices, though. Or just reused phylactery/blood vial assets cus you see them in various mage and templar settings, too.

The push to remove artificial food coloring has reached Thedas.

But seriously, the icon in the wheel is still red, I haven't really paid much attention to the rest.  DA:I really likes the color green in general.
