I love messing with the necro. I love mixing up the build everytime. Last one was winters grasp killing a target, wading into the virulence freeze fest and kabamphing (it's a word now) the energy blast mind blast green brain thingy. Lots of pretty colored big numbers and my barrier comes up. Might not be the best thing but it makes me happy and in my mind that's all that really matters.

Other than the good points on spirit mark for survivability above. I also disagree with the op s damage assessment.

Sure you can go full cc on her but she has some nice offensive options like fade cloak (as mentioned) and now energy barrage which deals what? About 1300% damage if the enhanced ring is equipped. You know what that means once you have both power of the dead and first blood passives? Another 1.45 damage multiplier on top. I ran matches on nm with both the ele and the necro where I was a damage dealer / controller in the group. Results where simililar for both characters. That was using pull strategy the whole game. Yes while the ele could barrier himself up before going a bit in the open to lay a fire mine under a strategic target, the necro shot the homing energy barrage from just around a wall while seeing the enemy (i use this strategy to also cast fire walls with the ele at archer formations before risking going out in the open). If I though on the necro there was a significant chance I would get pincushioned going a bit ahead from our pull point to launch a wb or ice mine at the enemy formations I would hit fade cloak. the class does not lack in anything vis a vis ele defensively other than barrier and with passives has a significantly higher damage output (though I must say if you are really good at using fire mine on the ele it will probably be a wash) . And barrier in itself even on the ele should be used interchangeably as both an offensive (chaotic focus) and defensive tool to use your 4 ability slots in the most efficient way. On the necro you have fade cloak for that or fade step.

I like her because she's challenging to play.

Besides, it's fun to use blizzard for protection and yell "BOO!" with fear, followed by massive walking bomb explosions.

I find the Necromancer is honestly one of the most fun classes to play due to the explosions. Similar to the Alchemist.

And yet both of these classes are seen as being sub-par.

I still really wonder why Walking Bomb had it's damage "rebalanced" to be diluted over a longer duration. DAIMP is really not well suited for damage over time as it is... I think that was a real gimp for Necro players.

I find the Necro quite fun myself, mainly play for CC using horror, blizzard, walking bomb & winters grasp, great at keeping me alive and doing a fair crack of damage to a bunch of guys.

Speaking of which do the wb explosions do actually 600% damage or just the dot. It's pretty egregious if bw hasn't fixed that yet yet it's in the ability description from day 1.

I personally think it would be balanced for nm if the explosion did 2x or 2.5x damage of the regular dot.

You don't need barrier if you're any good at spirit marking. I've died a dozen times in a match and had 0 downtime.

Wait, how does this work exactly?

When you die with a Spirit Mark Minion alive, the minion will die along with you, so you get a bit of health back from Heal on Kill and possibly Death Siphon.

You usually have time to quickly kill a Marked enemy to make a minion because of Simulacrum. There is a cooldown to Simulacrum however, so you can't die too often, and everytime you resurrect this way counts as entering the Fade, so you can only rely on yourself for self-rez.

Walking Bomb and Elemental Barrage also helps if you have Heal on Hit - just launch them one or two seconds before Simulacrum ends and when you fall over dead you will resurrect with a tiny bit of health.

This is not so good when going up against Storm / Inferno dragons or RTC. Teammates distracting enemy when you die also helps a lot (or get you killed quickly because they lured enemy to your corpses.

I wish Sidony starts with Walking Bomb instead of Horror. She is really tedious to play at level 1 - there are too many enemies immune to both Horror and Freeze, and she has no good damage or defense skill compared to the other three mages.

Name them. I know exactly which ones are immune to panic and freeze. Most mobs are not.

With a decent damage staff WB does great damage to multiple enemies.

Shadows, venatori mages and fear demons are the only three that i can think of that are immune to both. However, they are all everywhere on nightmare.

I find this thread is a waste of space.

Sometimes you need some salty biatch party banter.

Huh, you are right.

It really, really sucks when you have so little to deal with the dratted shadows and fear demons though.

I still find the class fun to play.  I still don't know exactly why at times I get get self rez'd and at times I just up and die after a few seconds.  Spirit mark was more useful than usual this past weekend I found.

I love the Necromancer.

She is great for crowd control.

Although she is not so great for dragons.

But seeing a Necro get the killing blow on the dragon with Walking Bomb is still, honestly, one of the funniest things ever.

POOF!

Necro's not a mage I care to play and I definitely don't play her well, but I have seen a few friends absolutely Beast Mode with her.

WB and FC both knock them around or stagger them. FC kills them. They make great pets too.

It wouldn't be so bad if you can get Walking Bomb earlier. WB is a really good skill even just for knocking away dangerous enemy.

The Necro is great.I like winter's grasp, fade cloak, walking bomb, and energy barrage, but I still rotate different abilities because there are several good combinations to play around with.

The one downside (last I knew), self-res counted against your three deaths. After being revived three times, you'll end up in the fade for the rest of the zone (just like anyone else).

So it may be handy, it's not really something I'd really call a highlight of the Necromancer.

It does count towards the three deaths, however, you CAN revive yourself from the fade using spirit mark. If you're too slow you'll be stuck in the fade like any other character, that's true.

I think people don't like her because there is no "obvious build". She is definitely one of my favorite mages. I wish though that Simulacrum was not a mandatory skill. I wish they would switch its place in the tree with Pyromancer or Unsullied Victim. I like every build I have tried with her. She's fun, versatile, and powerful. She just seems to have little problems here and there.

-Ice armor never seems to work for me

-Simulacrum does the opposite of what it seems to be intended to do

-DoT is less useful than burst in most situations.

Simulacrum has supposedly been fixed. Ice Armour is still broken sadly.

DoT is sadly showing really fatigue when taken to Nightmare or above. The miniscule damage mixed with the laughably short durations make it good for neither burst nor sustained DPS. To top it off, stacking DoTs is unreliable at best, and at worst (which is most common) it just plain doesn't work. Those are the real issues with DoT.

TL;DR: Damage over time abilities need to be reliably stackable and either have much longer durations with similar damage to now, or much higher damage with the same duration as now.
