I'd be over the moon to see a transgender squadmate, and a couple of my trans friends would likely love to see this in MEA, too. If this was the case, then it would also be great if they were a love interest. I wouldn't be surprised to see a trans squadmate. Seems like a natural next step after Krem in DAI.

Krem being a companion with a good storyline would have helped a lot.   If the ME team decides to add a trans character, I hope it's not done the same way the DA team did it.

I think Krem definitely had more depth than just being a transman; he also gave us a view as to life for a common Tevinter freeman contrasted to the view we got of slavery from Fenris and the view we got of nobility from Dorian. 

 

We didn't get much of that, but it was as least as much if not more than dialogue relating to his gender identity. Just his trans nature is what sticks out in people's minds more because badass exiled soldier second in command isn't as unique in the gaming world.

 

As pointed out elsewhere in this thread, Krem wasn't meant to be the deepest, most complex character in DAI, just a relatively well developed character to serve as a side character to Bull's personal arc. Far as trans inclusion and representation goes, that's a good first step.

True enough. Although, he had as much backstory, or more, than any other minor npc. But it was obvious that they wanted us to know without a doubt that he was trans. And by focusing so much on that--well, as much as a minor npc can offer, they turned Krem into the Trans character.

 

But he did have more to talk about, and I liked the story.

 

edit: I think really the biggest problem Krem faced, and one of the reasons he is seen as the Trans character, is because he did have such a minor role. It's like they were trying to present too much within the confines of a very minor character. And that resulted in it feeling a bit like a mini-infodump.

 

If Krem was a major npc, they would not have had to rush the conversations about it all.

The sad thing about this sort of sentiment is that one of the defining characteristics of Cortez' character is his love of flying and spaceships. The Citadel DLC even plays this up by having his meet-up be a joyride in the Kodiak, which is probably my favorite meet-up in the game.

Steve's backstory is both death of the husband and love of flying. They weren't mixed very well, but they're two distinct parts. While Samantha's history is completely downplayed (in fact, without the Citadel DLC, you can play through her quest and never now), Steve is separated.

 

I'm okay with Steve. It felt like two separate characters mashed together, but I didn't see the seams until I looked harder. The romance was downplayed, but that was true of all the non-squaddie mances.

I disagree. I don't think this board really represents the majority of BioWare fans and I think most people are pretty clued in about where this company stands on lgbt issues and characters. Frankly what's more surprising to me is the glaring and transparent unwillingness of those who don't want lgbt characters in these games to accept that their's is a doomed cause and they are just, at this point, pissing into the wind here. I am not sympathetic to them and I do not agree with your assertion that including a transgender character is a risky choice. There would be noise from people whose opinions are not worth listening to and who are on the losing side of the cultural wars and history. 

 

My point might have been clumsily made. I don't think Bioware faces a significant risk either way, but there had been a recurring trend of posts suggesting that Bioware writing a transgender character into a game would be done to avoid "offending keyboard warriors/SJWs."  

 

This line of reasoning struck me as so ridiculous that I was focusing on that more than anything. I'm seeing a rise in the number of people who seem to be trying to use accusations of someone or some group being offended as a smoke screen to conceal their own sense of offense, and it becomes an ugly cycle. 

 

I stepped in here to argue that there's a middle ground on the BSN, and then the thread just keeps becoming more combative. People are putting words in each other people's mouths and making great heaping assumptions. I'm just trying not to fan the flames.
