Okay, after reading the entire thread, I've reaffirmed my belief that many of the gaming community aren't ready for a transgendered LI.  The reactions in this thread alone provides a fair sample size of the reactions that the fans may have to this.  Heck, Maevaris in the DA comics is quite popular, and even then the reactions to the suggestion made by posters that she could possibly ever be a LI were...less than classy.

I'm all for a transgendered squadmate.  I also really liked Sho's idea from a few days ago, where the conversation about the character being trans is treated pretty causally.  ("Yeah, I was born a different gender.  Pass me that socket wrench please.") I don't want a transgendered squadmate, I want a squadmate who happens to be transgender.  That would be an awesome place to start.  I seriously think we're about 10 years or so away from a trans LI.  Let's try to introduce a trans squadmate/party member first.  In a galaxy with a monogendered race, a transgendered human doesn't seem like that big of a stretch.

Real quick on the subject of "normal":  I prefer the term "personal status quo."  "Normal" for me is doing chores at 2am, and going to bed by 8am.  That's certainly not typical or average for many of the rest of the world, but it is normal for me.  I personally despise the word "normal," because it's entirely subjective based on lifestyle and culture.

Ok so we're back to hating words because you don't like the connotations. Neat.

People really need to stop using "science" and "medicine" to back up their outrage when they don't understand the science and medicine in question.

I well and truly fail to understand why it is that we insist on changing or outright ignoring a word's meaning purely because some can't seem to understand what it actually means.

Because that's the only way we can use the word to support our anger!

I was talking in another thread and I would pay to watch the explosion on this forum if the next game happens in Tevinter and Maevaris is a companion. Mae is a transgender Tevinter mage, and I think magister too.

I just have a personal preference is all.  The word normal is pretty meaningless, if you think about it.  What's normal for one person is not normal for the other.  Most housewives I know aren't up all night doing chores and sleeping during the day as part of their daily routine.  I'm not going to tell anyone not to use it, but it's a word that I generally avoid for myself.  No biggie.   :)

@Jeremiah  No doubt.  That's why I didn't use science or medicine.  I just figure that a transgendered character would make as much sense as a monogendered race does.

@Lulu  Mae is likely in as a companion, but I seriously doubt they'll make her a LI.  Not just because she's transgendered, but also because I hope BioWare has heard the fans request no more widow(er)s.  She had only recently lost her husband, who was one of Varric's cousins.

That's not actually what either of those sources say. They both say it's currently unknown and the second one says it COULD be a combination of biological, environmental, and social factors. Neither say that there is any empirical evidence to support this though.

Apparently when someone is touting theories that are made of pure grade A bullshit any old inconclusive article will be proof enough.

I was only on page 31 when I wrote that. It was not directed at any one person, I assure you!

I didn't think so.  <hugs>  I was agreeing with you 100%.

I'm back on the forums, at least somewhat.  I can stand to look at my computer again.  I fought for it for a week straight, and I still don't know what exactly happened.  I played FFIV and FF1 on my PSP until I felt more like myself again.   :P

Stay away Nat, for your sanity, I don't know why I'm back here... again.

Pff, my sanity was traded away for a few hits of LSD when I was 18.  There is some people here I honestly like, and a few that I might meet up with in person.  One of whom I owe a beer. :P

I've missed some of those folks while I've been playing FFIV: The Fanfiction er The After Years.

Here, let me help you.

Also, there are now a ton of microbreweries around certain cities (such as Philadelphia) that are really good.

For me, Woodchuck Apple Cider.  It's close enough to beer for me and for my friend.

@Crono Denver has some of the largest amounts per capita of microbreweries in the nation.  American beer can be good, but not that mass produced crap. <honorary like>

  Thanks Lady.  I've been around a little bit, but between my computer and a few threads, I had to step back.

...Commercial American beer isn't very good, but we have plenty of exceptional breweries crafting quality beer.  :(

Tell you what; they get two games in a row without a widow/er companion or LI, and I'll buy you a beer.

No reason to drink mass produced stuff once you realize how easy and cheap brewing your own beer is. I have an Imperial Pale Ale keg in my fridge that cost $40 to make 5 gallons.

But seriously writing off American beer because of Bud Light is like writing off Dutch beer because of Heineken.

Hard cider and you have a deal.  If you make it out to Colorado, let me know.  ;)

A friend of mine makes his own mead.  Some of the best stuff I've ever tasted.

I am getting used to mead but it still smells a bit strange to me. I had a Cyser a few weeks ago that was great though, from Vermont.

I think Mae is a lock for the next DA game. I'd be disappointed in her being a companion but that has nothing to do with her being trans.
