Can we have our first transgender romance option?

While I wouldn't in any way object to a well written and implemented transexual/transgendered character being in game, and being a romance option, my fear is, as some others have suggested here, that it would be very easy for the writers to make that character being a transsexual as their defining aspect of them, and for their story arc to be all about them being transsexual/transgendered.

Now, of course, not being one, I can't speak for transgendered people, but I've a couple of friends who are and, frankly, the fact that they are biologiclaly male (both are pre-op) is utterly irrelevant. To me at least, they're defined by their personality, their likes and dislikes, their beliefs etc. Of course, them being transgendered has been part of what shaped their personality, but there is so much more to them than just that.

So, a character that happens to be transgendered? Good

A transgendered character? Bad

MP is not even in alpha yet.

They said, that they will finish SP first.

If there is time and budget left, they will set up the MP-Team and budget.

To the OP:

I have read rumours that one of the new species on Andromeda will be hermaphrodite.

A pity that you aren't, for if you would, i could tell you to go and what you can do yourself without sounding insulting :)

Spoiler

What's the point of spoilering that insult?

I think it's a given that ideally we'd want any character important enough to be a romantic option to have more depth than their character being defined entirely by what is or isn't between their legs.

It would be ideal to skip over the pitfalls that have come with including other demographics in media; having them embody stereotypes, or having their sexuality or race be the sum total of their character, that happened before writers and studios and audiences, really, allowed them to be included as fully fleshed out characters. Indeed, with many demographics we still fall prey to those pitfalls, though not as often.

Still, I don't see "they might do a bad job" as a reason to dismiss the idea all together. Really, Bioware's already done a bad job here with their portrayal of transgendered characters in DAO and DA2, and have moved past that with more well rounded and developed(if still relatively minor) characters such as Maevaris and Krem.

Including a trans character in as big a role as a romance option might give them a good opportunity to flesh the character out more beyond that, and a futuristic setting like ME would be a good place to show how it isn't really a big deal anymore in the same vein of Star Trek showing a society where racial issues were no longer a concern.

In any event, whether they do or don't include a trans character, and whether or not that character is a romance, I doubt hinges on the support shown in this thread; it will be the result of an internal desire by the Bioware writing staff to tell that story or not.

I don't really doubt that they'd do a bad job. I just don't get why it's important. There are millions of people who play these games, and that's about as niche as it gets.

You'll also have the choice of playing an AI Ken or Barbie doll. So you won't have bits at all.

Sure, I'd welcome another trans character. Really enjoyed Krem and would like to see the issue fleshed out more. Thumbs up!

OK, how about this... Put in all the possible romance options available...  even the ones YOU haven't thought of yet.

But then make the game only one extremely insane difficulty. Worse than Battletoads. At least this way I know we're all just here for good gaming and not the rest of this stuff

Sure. I liked Krem better than several of the actual companions in DAI (if he had been a companion, I'd actually have a warrior to use besides Cassandra for starters) and I probably would have tried his romance if it had been an option in the game.

It's important cause there isn't many good transgender characters around. If it was norm to have transgender characters once a while and it wouldn't be big deal then it wouldn't be important.

It's a fringe issue that a small fraction of gamers care about. How about making the games for them. Instead of the few thousand people or so that fit in the niche category of Shooter/RPG/Military Sci-Fi/Transexual Interactive Romance fan.

Transgender character can and should be for everyone like any character. Also do we all care about bodybuilding like Vega? Archeology like Liara? Probaply not and they are still in the game and we aren't against these sides that are part of them. What I like to see in games is diverse cast of different people, not cast where everyone is like me, where is fun in that? ^^

Exploring social issues and enjoying tough combat aren't mutually exclusive. Should we avoid the issues of slavery and religion in gaming as well? Or, do people only want to exclude the issues that make them personally uncomfortable? IMO, those issues that make people the most uncomfortable are the ones that need the attention. ME3 rooted out a personal bias of my own that made me uncomfortable and I dealt with it. I'm happy that happened.

I didn't care for Vega, but he fits a much bigger niche. And Liara was nerdbait in ME1... easy win.

I'd prefer to just have a trans character visible in the ME universe first, possibly as a crew member or squadmate. LI status could be saved for a future game. If ME's first ever trans character was also an LI, they'd feel a bit like "here's your novelty romance for this game!"

I like DA's handling of it, with Maevaris and Krem. You see them in the world first, just doing their jobs and part of the story.

I think we should avoid slavery in the sense that some people want to play Tevinter slavers in Dragon Age. Fuckem. Those assholes should be forced to at be least mildly heroic.. or at least rogue-ish and rebellious. That's just in bad taste. And what kind of gameplay does "slavery" really bring to the table anyways?

Well, no one in Mass Effect's target demographic has biotics or is an alien, yet somehow we're still able to emphasize with and relate to characters that are. Characters in fiction don't need to be an exact reflection of the audience to be a good character and often it's a hindrance if they are.

If you're talking about the percentage of people would be comfortable romancing a trans character, well, romances are optional content and if you don't want to romance someone for whatever reason, you're not required to do so.

This would likely work better as approach than just having first transcharacter in the game that takes LI spot, okay for me, but would likely be lot of outrage.
