Yep. I mean, I'd be happy with a trans LI. But considering how some people reacted to Krem (who's a pretty minor character and mentions his gender a grand total of once unless you ask a second time), I think a gradual approach would be better for the first trans character in ME.

I am indifferent to transgender romances but if BioWare wants to do something they could spend all their development careers waiting for the right time. Things change because people change them. People can scream about it on forums but in the end they will be forgotten, and the game will remain.

I agree with this, but I think Bioware DO want to include this kind of content anyway, their last couple of games and their respective EU content show that. Like I said earlier, they can make this content as prominent as they wish as far as i'm concerned. As long as they don't try to preach or lecture or "educate" the fanbase. I think that's when it feels forced and cheap.

This is the thing that people continue to conveniently overlook.  Bioware does want to make this kind of content.  The developers have flat out said this.  And they included it in the past games.  And they attend LGBT gaming conventions to talk about it.  And they talk about it in interviews and tweets.  And they include this content in the EU.  I mean, everything screams that Bioware wants to include this content.  But people will continue to pretend as if they are being forced to do so because of some external agenda.  Despite a huge amount of evidence to the contrary.

That's a good point.

BW isn't so guilty of that as it's the fandom. I think that some people dislike Krem not because Krem is trans, but because some of the fans make a lot of noise over this fact. And that is bound to ****** people off. I know that happens to me. Some times I go to the tavern, look at Krem and think to myself "oh, if it isn't Krem. Have the SJW patted you on the head today?"

So, I think an trans romance would just annoy me. Because even if BW manages to include it flawlessly, the fandom will surely taint it with their pretentious nonsense.

I'm not making myself miserable exactly. Not entirely. ;) Part of me just likes making fun of people.

Romance is one of their niches, correct. And it's OK half of the time. But it's really just a side feature. I don't want a squadmate slot wasted simply to fulfill someone's sexual fantasy...especially a niche one. I just hope there's more to it than that.

I don't see having diverse representation of people as fulfilling someones sexual fantasy. I see it as making diversity the new normal. People can become used to having LGBTQ folks, strong non-sexualized women, protagonists of color and all the rest around when they are exposed to it.

Because "Bioware should just write the stories they want to write" is code for "Bioware should write stories with characters that I'm comfortable with but I don't have the balls to be honest about my trans/bi/homophobia, so I'll hide behind my thin veil of pretending to be looking out for Bioware."

I think it's the classic case of:

"Bioware shouldn't pander to fans and should be free to write the stories that they want to write.  Unless Bioware wants to write stories that I don't like, in which case they shouldn't be free to write those stories and should pander to me."

We see this showing up more and more now that Bioware is actually writing the stories that they want to write, which just happen to be stories that aren't traditionally featured in video games.

What irks me however, is this new labeling mentality -- from both sides of the group. Transgenders and those who oppose or do not accept the idea. The point I'm putting across here is, this sudden need to have the name 'transgender' as a group separate from those who are 'cis'. It creates an us vs them mentality and makes matters far worse, it doesn't help the goal of 'understanding and acceptance' one bit.

Personally I find the term 'cis' offensive. Especially when it is coupled with 'white'. To me this is no different to racism and discrimination, just on a reverse angle. It's no better.

I wanna point out that "cisgender" has been called into existence not to create a hostile us vs them environment, but mostly because if you have transgender and nothing else, people are inclined to call non-transgender people "normal", as if being transgender is icky or weird (or a "freak" or a "trap" or a "sicko" or "people who dont deserve to live" or...). And that gives some people a 'reason' to either physical abuse people into normality or "correct" people into normality.

IDK, find it a bit weird how cisgender is offensive when its mostly used as a safeguard. Please ignore 90% of the "CISHET SCUM!!!!!!!" gangbang on tumblr, otherwise my point sounds pretty stupid, but many transgender individuals suffer heavy abuse/neglect because they're seen as unnatural/not normal/abominations.

I understand. Nobody should be judging or calling other people freaks or abominations when it comes to things like race, colour, sexual preference, etc.

My point is.. both transgenders and non-transgenders are *people*. There should be labels for neither. I mean sure, transgender to a degree is a label.. but it serves a purpose to explain somebody who went through the transition. The "cisgender" concept I don't believe is necessary and seems to be grouping mentality, just my opinion though.

BioWare will not have satisfied my desire for a transgender romance option until they have included a character who has changed genders at least twice. There's no need for the second to be a switch back to the original gender, what with all the options available in the Mass Effect universe.

It is the future. There is generic engineering.

A tip to a doctor and few weeks down time you are male/female at the generic level.

Plus Society being way more progressive, all the haters have moved onto hating aliens, leaves that a lot more accepted.

So basically it would be a mundane thing.

Dragon age on the other hand would can tell a good story with it, A.K.A allow Krem to be a romance.

I'm actually against it for story reasons.

Look, these are frontiers-people.  Not layabouts looking to explore their uniqueness.  Yes, there may very well be men who feel like they are women (or more Krems) - but these people are going to need to fight to survive.  Dressing up is not a survival trait - it's a luxury trait.

So sure - I'm all for a person who is transgendered... but a person who's only purpose is to explore being transgendered?  No.

Transgendered: "I appear as a man, but identify as a woman."

PC:  "I don't care - dig the trench, we need to get this foundation poured."

Don't forget the forum would use spreadsheets to demonstrate how BIoWare wronged them, for after all this is the BioWare boards and here no matter what BioWare does its the wrong thing.  I remember the entire "cupcake incident" for there were people that got upset because BioWare gave the cupcakes sent to them to a youth shelter.

To the subject of the thread, as long as it is done well I don't have a problem with it.  The concern I do have is using Krem as an example for to me Krem dealt more about gender issues inside of the Qun then physical sexuality and I am not exactly sure that is what people are asking for.  The other concern I have is how much of a minefield the entire issue is right now, for there were complaints I saw about Krem being voiced by Jennifer Hale instead of a transgendered person and that just reminds me of what happened with Connor Kennedy in Assassin's Creed 3.
