Ugh, I was running over redcliff bridge and entering the smith's shop and running over the bridge again to run through some dialogs and heard the one where Wynne talks about having her son and how she doesn't know what happened to him because the chantry took him.  She says any children born to mages belongs to the chantry, I just found myself completely disgusted with the whole chantry in charge of the mage's thing. grrrrr! I'm glad in my last playthrough when I played a mage that sacrificed himself that King Alistair gave land to the mages that would not be ruled over by the chantry.  I happen to think that not so many mages would have turned to blood magic or been duped into it if the Chantry didn't have such an iron grip on the mages. haha can't believe I'm so into a 'game' that I felt the need to vent and opinion on a forum.  Loving the game!

It was really a brilliant move by Bioware. If mages were real, I don't doubt for a minute that we wouldn't have similar issues with the church.

It's funny how different characters have seen the chantry differently for me though. My HN had no problems with the chantry since she was raised to believe so strongly. My Dalish was respectful of the chantry because she knew how strongly she believed in the creators. My DC (current pla through) hates the chantry. I find myself cringing every time someone says, "Maker," or any other Andraste type comment.

I really despise the chantry with a passion. They seem to think that everything belongs to them and take every chance they get to call people heathens and heretics. I especially hate the way they treat mages...they have to live in a giant prison, they have their children basically kidnapped and they kill them if their harrowing takes longer than 30 seconds. They are about as evil as anything else you fight.

Well, when you play a mage, request a boon of the king/queen at the end of the game that could make the situation better. :)

That doesn't quite do it for me. I would like to kill at least one of those Sister's or Revered Mother's who calls me a heathen. The one's at Ostagar, Lothering and Redcliff are especially annoying.

It really makes me want to destroy the ashes out of spite but I don't want to lose Wynne and/or Leliana.

I do like to give the Circle more freedom though as I believe Irving is much more libertarian than many think is but, I would also like to change the law so all mages don't have to be taken from their families.

I have a love/hate relationship with the Chantry...on my first playthrough, I like it. They seemed to care about all things, and they're incredible grip on the mages seemed, at first, like nothing more than a precaution...the more I play, the more I see the fact that the Chantry is nothing more than a power-hungry organization :(

I'm no fan of the Chantry and neither is my character, but I actually only recall the sister at Ostagar being rude to me, and that probably had little to do with my being a mage and everything to do with me telling her I didn't want her blessing.*

*I actually just kind of laughed that off, since it was obvious she was angry with my PC because I denied her offer of doing something (blessing me while I'm on bended knee) that made her feel "special."

What I really heard from her was, "How DARE you not acknowledge that I'm spiritually superior to you!"  LOL.  Come on, that's just something to laugh at and perhaps feel pity over, not commit murder.

There's "taking precautions," and then there's exploiting a shaky situation (the dangers that mages can pose) as a way to build and maintain political power.

The one in Ostagar was a "Well **** you too" moment for me. The one in Lothering was a real ***** because I wouldn't give her a tithe and then wouldn't give me the key for Sten's cage(I loved threatening her but would have also liked the opportunity to follow up on that threat). And I hate the way the one in Redcliff acts all high and mighty, "No, I don't want to give the soldiers any hope, I'd rather they die than offer them any false motivation" and the way she butts in the ceremony at the end to say her blessing when other conversations are going on.

I really just depise people who push their beliefs on others and then insult them when they refuse to agree with them.

I felt bad for her because she came off as very "down on her luck" and it seemed she actually did want to help people, so I decided to give her some money.

And I hate the way the one in Redcliff acts all high and mighty, "No, I don't want to give the soldiers any hope, I'd rather they die than offer them any false motivation"...

I fully respected her honesty, although I wish I had the option to say to both the soldiers and the priestess something along the lines of, "It's true, the Maker isn't actually going to do anything for us.  So, go a step further and think carefully about why you're worshipping him..."

Destroy the ashes before getting Wynne, and lie to Leliana about it, problem solved.  I personally like just leaving the dragon alive so it can eat the pilgrims.

And to offer a different view on this:

I'm a huge Warhammer 40K fan. I actually laughed aloud in glee when I realized I was essentially playing a psyker and the entire mage/templar/Chantry thing just felt like a huge(and awesome!) homage to one of my favorite settings.

While I still made my characters react differently to the whole thing based on their background, I honestly really enjoyed it. One of my friends who is also a WH40K fan has pretty much the same view.

Now, repeat to yourself "It's just a game, I should really just relax."

Basically the entire view I had of mages in this game too. Which is more or less why I'm ambivalent about the fate of the mages.
40k spoils me <_<

I hate mages and magic in general. I lie, cheat and swindle my way to keeping Wynne and Morrigan in the party but other than that, they all die :)

I think the most obvious evidence of the Chantry's stifling the mages is in the cutsceen where you go to the war meeting with the King, Loghain, Duncan, rev. mother, and mage. The revered mother totally disrespects the mage, it's not what she says but the way she says. Exellent voice acting by the way. :)

ack pressed submit too soon.

My point was that that kind of oppression leads to people taking drastic measures to get out from under it, hence the use of blood magic. The fact that the Chantry priests don't hesitate to talk that way to a mage in front of the king says a fair bit about the whole plight of mages in general. It's amazing the depth that was put into the atmosphere of the whole game.  Amazing Image IPB

Don't you recognize who that mage is? It's Uldred.  It gives the whole scene a certain irony knowing he was in cohoots with Loghain . . .

Well, it definitely adds more to Uldred's "We have to break free of Chantry control' argument, that's for sure. If Uldred had ever had any doubts about the rightness of his course before that war council, I'm sure they disappeared there.

After the council:

Uldred: You see? You see how they treat us?
Loghain: I saw it. I never doubted before, remember? But .. You know that I am powerless right now.
Uldred: I know. But soon, my friend. Soon. And no matter what Cailan thinks of the Orlesians and the Wardens, we will stop your blight and protect and defend Ferelden for you. And in return, you will aid us when we break free of Chantry influence.
Loghain: Of course. As we agreed.

I've felt a similar vibe now and then, along with A Song of Ice and Fire, The Witcher, and others. But that's a different thread entirely.Image IPB

This is complete speculation on my part, but part of me wishes that the male Mage Warden in the Awakenings trailer turns out to be Wynne's long lost son.

If your Dalish Elf was respectfull of the Chantry then she didnt pay enough attention during storytime.....What the Chantry did to the Dales is one of their worst crimes.

I am Wynnes long lost son (or at least my mage PC is). Either that or the love child of duncan and a female mage.
