Tactics are set up for party members that you are not currently controlling. If you are controlling a characther, you must manually tell it what to do. Your other party members will do what they are told, based on how you set up your tactics automatically.

All these responses above me are correct. If you cannot understand, perhaps this game is too complicated for you.

I agree that his posts aren't that constructive, but maybe someone should develop a short walkthrough for people who don't understand how to use the system, so that people may get the most out of the game.
I'm pretty sure you don't even need to use the system but yeah...
Someone did, it's called the game manual.
There were also several people in this thread, with infinitely more patience and understanding than me. That have attempted to help this obviously frustrated little kid. They have gotten no positive feedback what so ever.

Forgive me if I don't recall exactly the specifics, but example: I have a Mage in my party. When I'm not in direct control of my Mage, I want her to automatically cast a heal spell on me if my health drops to below 25%. I can set it up to do that. I go to tactics menu for the Mage and set the condition to some thing like player health <= 25% then set the action to use ability heal spell.
Just to add when he says condition, it's the slot on the left page. The right side of the tactics page is the action part. So for a certain condition you want a particular character to take some action. That's how you set up tactics.

seriously the tactics menu is confusing, but it's something you just have to figure out, most everything in this game has a more info option to explain it.

NO TIME AT ALL TO FIGURE IT OUT.

Despite this I have done a little net research for you and found this dragonage.gulbsoft.de/doku.php/ai
It looks to give an overview of the NPC AI with a simple tutorial on the tactic parts, which should get you started. It all looks quite easy to me and a little experimenting I imagine will result in more complex tactics.
For me part of the fun in this type of game is figuring things out and experimenting with stuff but I guess not everyone is the same.
Disclaimer: I can't verify the accuracy of the link as my copy of the game hasn't arrived yet but it looks genuine to me, perhaps one of the lucky people could have a quick look and confirm please

YOUR ALL.COMPLETE RETARDS WITH DOWN SYNDROME.
Given that at least a couple hundred thousand people have been playing the game with out complaint at this point, and as we all know that would no doubt include some fairly young children, i find this rather ironic.
Dude the reason noone has given you a proper reply is because they probably just cannot honestly believe your having trouble understanding it.
Someone did point out the tactics menu is explained on pg 31 of the manual but i can't verify that as i never looked at it and am at collage at the mo.

wow, just wow... i don't know if you are trolling or not, but im going to give you the benefit of the the doubt and believe that you really are having trouble understanding the tactics menu. It can be daunting at first. I had no idea what to do with it either, until i did a little bit of reading and playing with it. I'll try and give you the basics of the system.
Let me take off with this
_________________________________________________________________________________________
The tactics menu is a powerful tool that the player character (you) can use to tell your party members what to do when you do not have them selected. These "triggers" can be situational. For example (I'll try to use the language that the game uses), If "self is attacked by a melee character" (this is the first box on the left), then activate "dirty fighting" (this is the first box on the right.
You already lost me already........................ BOXES?
what boxes? what are they used for, why do i have them, how do I found them? Start breaking this down before going on
_________________________________________________________________________________________
If "ally goes below (>) 30% health" (again this is the box on the left) then "cast lesser heal" (this is the box on the right)
THIS IS NOT AN EXAMPLE...this is nonsense......wtf and why would I ever have any interest in this...what is the point to showing me this Knowing this information does me absolutely no good whatsoever? Why are you pointing thsi out for?
_________________________________________________________________________________________
Sorry don't know what you are talking about? If "surrounded by 3 enemies" (box on the left) then activate *ability X that attacks more than one enemy at once*(insert name of ability between the stars) (box on the right)
You have not said what is being activated, how it was set up, and how it was set up, you also epic failed to explain HOW IT WAS SET UP IN ORDER TO BE EXECUTED
Again you have totally lost me
Again, this system tells the computer (AI or Artificial Intelligence) what to do in certain situations when you are not able to pay full attention each individual party member. This happens to me all the time.
Yeah but HOW? there is nothing you have told me that explains or shows what you are doing to send this infoprmation to the game so it gets picked up by the game and executed either manually or automatically. besides having a party is 100% useless as well, because I always kill every enemy in about 15 seconds by myself and with no help and I play on normal
Sorry but this is the same problem I have been saying all along

1 - if you don't understand any of this I really don't know what more anyone can do to help.
2 - Seriously how old are you, that's not an insult I really want to know?
3 - Tatics are not essential to playing the game if the whole concept is too complex or alien to you, you can always pause the game and give you characters instructions on what to do directly while the game is paused.
4 - as you noticed you got more helpful posts once you toned down the ranting and took CAPS off. Basicly don't be rude and people will try and help.
5 - You can directly control any character in your party, and access the inventry, skills, etc of any character in your party.
6 - you only have one character at the start of the game so you don't really need tactics at that point.

Sorry you have now totally made absolutely no sense... you are always in control of your character, and you can only go into your own inventory.
I don't think you know what you are talking about[/quote]
I"m sorry but I think you need a video..you are obviously a "Special Needs" person who has Turetzs Syndrome"

You complain about not understanding the Tactics menu, but you have no interest in learning how it works. My advice to you: either start taking some interest in the explanations people provide, or completely forget about tactics, turn them all off, and just control all your characters by hand.

See page 31-32 in the manual...
I have read it...and...what was the point...why do i care about how to open the tactics menu and what it does.
Where is the explanations on how to take anything that's in the tactics menu, and not only apply it to a character, but how to know what character your applying it to, and above all how you execute it.
too bad you said to read something that is non-existant

TACTICS USAGE FOR ANGRY NEWBS
First of all - every character has it's own tactics page. On top of the left side of tactics page you have character name, and there you can change it to another by clicking arrows on left and right side of the name.
On the left side of tactics page you set up tactics conditions.
For example, you can set Enemy -> Health -> Health > 50% which means that this tactic will be used if current character is fighting Enemy that has more than 50% hp left.
Then on the right side you set up corresponding action to the condition - for example Use Ability -> Shield Bash. It means that the current character will use this skill when the condition on the left side is met (and the skill is available).
So if you set it like in above example, the character selected will automagically use Shield Bash on enemy which has more than 50% hp left.
Tactics are working when you don't control this character manually.
If you still doesn't get it, I suggest playing something less sophisticated.
