Bioware played dumb here for some reason. After two games fans were all for a varren, so Bioware said "Ok, here's a robot-dog for you!"

.

The game even has the Shepard VI in the docks comment that you "look like a Varren person", so it made perfect sense to let us have one?

It's not like I didn't like having a robot dog with the CE, but it'd have been far nicer to let us interact with Sophie the robo-dog via cutscenes like we had with Dog in DAO and DA2. Barring that, it'd have been nice to see her wandering the rest of the ship and not just the cargo-bay, or getting into misadventures with the rest of the crew? EDI and Legion interacting with the robot dog would have been fun to see, but I especially would have loved to have seen Javik's reaction to it following him around the ship like a mechanical puppy.

As long as it's not a mandatory/only option dog or space dog "varren" then ok.

A ship's cat. A black one for good luck. Used to raise morale, hunt any infesting vermin and kill the shiny tassels of Krogan battlebras being hung out to dry in laundry. Also, scenes including a Turian trying to train it to become a beast of war, and one were it saves the crew by destroying an enemy ship by trying to kill the flashing red light that is actually a launch button for the cannon.

That is both disturbing and adorable. ^^

For Shepard it might had been irresponsible to get a dog, they're so very sociable and he/she obviously wouldn't been able to spend enough time with it? Even taking care of the fish caused trouble for Shepard (in many many playthroughs).

Hamster is rather ideal pet for someone without time for a dog. Though likely someone still came to feed and play with it while Shepard was gone in ME2 and 3. Cute hamster gains easily more love than poor fish in the tank.

I don't know/remember if Varren needs as much attention as a dog. Hamster as a video game protagonist's pet had more personality than any beast though, I think. It kinda fits the space theme too, there are supplies for hamsters advertised as space products, for some reason (cage is "space station" and so on).

Virtual or robotic pet would be the most manageable choice, and it could be fun and adorable if it was made to be. It might be also good to visit regularly a household with a pet in it, if there isn't anything else. Not that I wouldn't love to have a pet in a game. It'd even be cheatingly easy way to win gamers' hearts in the way no one would complain about. If I chose, it'd be a parrot. They're smart and interesting, and biggest woobies of all animals if raised right, but they need even more attention than dogs. Bird would be difficult to take care of if the game's going to be as variable as I hope.

Maybe some other rodent this time?

While I wish new hero won't follow Shepard too closely, if I'll see any shop selling a hamster, I'm going to buy it.
