Is there some super obvious way to catch this fuzzy jerk that I'm just not seeing? It says "herd the halla to the Dalish." Okay??? On foot or on a mount, there seems to be no way to herd this animal in the direction you want it to go in. I've tried chasing it in the direction I needed it to go in (and ended up running it over), tried running in the direction opposite I wanted it to go in, hoping it would run away from me/toward the Dalish (managed to somehow run it over again). Even tried different mounts, thinking that maybe, just maybe, the furry butthead would think a Hart was its mommy and follow it to camp, but nope, this little turd just runs willy nilly all over the plains for twenty bloody minutes. Finally ran into a pack of wolves and got itself killed. Marvelous. I've completed this quest once. Once. And only by sheer dumb luck.

I've lost count of how many times I've run it over, and some of those weren't even on purpose
...just kidding maybe. Honestly I don't think there's any fast rule to it. best method I found was to kinda try and keep it between you and the Dalish camp, and always sprint with the mount; keep it running as fast as possible and stay close but not too close... unless you get too close to the halla. Then back off, go wide around and try again. It's kinda just dumb luck after that, in my experience anyway.

I've never had trouble with the halla. First off, kill any wandering wolves between the halla and the camp. It won't follow you so you have to herd it. Get on your mount and carefully approach it (from the opposite direction of the camp). It should begin moving towards the camp. If you get too close it may spring into a random direction.
Edit: You don't even need this quest for the Dalish favor quest.

I tried the quest once and I was successful at the first attempt. I don't remember any wolves, though, but it might be my memory being overloaded... I didn't even need a mount, I just approached the halla, it ran away in random direction, so I approached again and again and again and scared it enough to get it run to the camp.

This... this is like magic. You herded the Halla on foot?

I almost never use mounts. I've done the Golden Halla quest twice, both times on foot, both times the way Shienis said. It didn't strike me as very difficult. A little time-consuming, maybe...

They spawn randomly like most ambient enemies.

You can do it on foot, I did so on my first playthrough as well. It is just more tedious to do so than while mounted.

I guess i just didn't think it was possible because I used the mont the first time and it worked, so I stuck with it. I guess it is impossible to run over the Halla on foot as well. Hmm... okay maybe next time I'll try it.

It is easier to actually "herd" the halla while mounted. On foot you'll just walk towards it and keep your finger crossed the AI will go where you want it to go.

I did it on-foot on my first playthrough as well. Was a mage, I used fade stepping to great effect. Honestly, doing it as a mage with fade step is actually quicker and easier than on a mount. Trust me, I've done both methods.

I always herd the halla on foot and he runs right to camp. He must think my PCs have cooties or something.
I've herded him on foot, 7 times so far.
(Playing on normal).

I've herded the Halla only on foot till know, tho I have to say it was easier as Lavellan than as Adaar.
I suspect the Halla likes Elves more than Qunari. ![]()

I herded it on foot - I rarely bust out my horse. But most of the time I don't even do it since it's the worst quest ever. You absolutely do not need it for the Dalish favor quest. Last two games I killed it for its tier 2 masterwork hide because I am that kind of broad. Hi my name is Andrea and I'm a halla killer.

I've only done this quest once. It seemed to get wonky after one of the early patches which made it much more difficult to complete on other PTs (to me). Once I "found" out it gave fade touched leather and yeah... ![]()

I always herd the halla on horseback, but keep my distance. If you get too close, it'll run in different directions.
A few times I had to jump off my horse to rescue it from a pack of wolves, random demons and a mercenary group during one play through. ![]()

For all their talk of how graceful and intelligent hallas are, they sure gracefully leap to their death.

ROADKILL! DIE STUPID HALLA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! *Mount explodes upon impact with Golden Halla*
Or you could just kill it and let bygones be bygones. Dalish love holding onto grudges, though. Rather gold horns take the beatin' than beatin' around the quest all day, yeah?

I too did this quest on my first try and without a mount. Though, I hear burning down the Dalish camp's the easiest way to do it. Didn't know the quest was this problematic, but then again I didn't know Lord Woolsley was possessed by a rage demon either.

This one is, for me a real PITA. It's easier mounted, but use the run feature judiciously.
The goal is to herd it. You're not running it down, or scaring it. If beasties attack, it's got some HP, but best to just dismount and deal with them. Even better to reload and travel somewhere else, if you saved before starting. If it gets spooked, it runs up the first darn rock it finds and gets stuck. Argh.
It does run off and do stupid stuff if it's panicked, so follow it and try to put yourself between it and areas you don't want it to go.
