Now that I rustled your jimmies with that title, let me clarify. It's racist to dwarves, specifically their combat ability. It's about the specialists, and how it's all humans or elves. None being qunari is understandable, tal-vashoth are pretty rare. But no dwarven specialists? So there's no dwarves of particular skill anywhere in Thedas, the entire Inquisition's resources to search the whole continent for skilled trainers and yet not one is a dwarf? It's not a super big deal, but this realization has rather annoyed me. It's like the game is telling you that dwarves aren't notable in combat ability, despite them having a caste that is entirely warriors and another caste that is all about arming those warriors and the fact that their one little city manages to keep the darkspawn fought off for entire ages with nothing but their warrior caste? I thought the canon was that dwarves has probably the most skilled and strong non-mage fighters out of all the races, and yet DAI would give the impression that dwarves are mostly carta fools who can't fight out of a paper bag and the only dwarf good at fighting in the game uses an automatic crossbow that takes little skill to use... And none in Thedas are skilled enough to be specialized in a style well enough to teach.

 

So yeah, only one badass dwarf in the game and he's only badass because his weapon is awesome. I really don't like those implications.

Skilled, yes. But Harding isn't amazing in combat, she doesn't have any specializations to teach. Dagna isn't a fighter at all, she's a researcher. So one is merely skilled, and the other isn't even a fighter. I'm failing to see your point.

My point is that the implication seems to be that dwarves aren't actually skilled, to the point that the entirety of Thedas doesn't have one skilled dwarf of note. It's not racist in the setting, but it is for the game itself. It just seems to be another case of dwarves getting the short end of the stick.

So does the fact that most dwarves on the surface are smugglers and criminals escape your memory? Okay, to be fair, I can see how they might have made the Artificier trainer a dwarf, but other than that, none of the others would really fit Bioware's canon.

Hate to nitpick, but the Warrior caste isn't the only thing keeping the darkspawn at bay. The dwarves that built Orzammar (including the gates), the Noble caste and Shaperate, and the society as a whole serve to keep the darkspawn back in one way or another. Of course, they do it in an indirect way that doesn't involve taking up arms. A more direct way that does involve combat is the fact that the Legion of the Dead spend almost all their waking hours fighting the darkspawn, actually living in the Deep Roads.

Not really. There are not that many dwarves in the first place. Those who are in the game are generally surface dwarves, who are portrayed mostly as merchants, craftsmen, criminals etc. While some do serve in armies, they do not form some specialized units. There is not much the Inquisitor could learn from common soldiers (there would be no need to have trainers).
The dwarves from Orzammar are not all soldiers either. Their warrior caste is more a sort of lower nobility. The members of the caste do not have some special skills, they just train and fight more than others. Same with the Legion. Dwarves do have some specialized warriors such as the Silent Sisters, but cutting ones tongue is not really an option in RPG with many dialogues.
Now, clearly there is Korbin (aka Paragon of Badass), Varric and other skilled dwarves, but being skilled at something does not necessarily mean a person is good trainer as well.

If anything there are too many elven trainers.

I think at this point the dwarf population is much, much smaller than the human and elf populations, due to the never-ending war with the darkspawn and infertility due to proximity to the blight. Also you'd have to pay a dwarf a lot of money to go to the top of a mountain.

I'm really not sure what you mean.  You say the series acts as if there are no skilled dwarves?  There's Dagna, Harding, Bianca, Sandal, Varric, and wasn't the rogue Artificer trainer a dwarf?  It's been a while, but I'm pretty sure he was.

 

Now, if you mean just skilled dwarf fighters: again, Harding was pretty good with a bow, IIRC; and there is the entire Legion of the Dead - a warrior group dedicated to fighting the Darkspawn.  And I seem to recall they are widely recognized as warriors on par with the Grey Wardens.

 

Is it just you want to see more of them on the surface?  0o

Humans are the master race/species and will inherit the entire world. The elves will fade away, the dwarves will fall under the weight of their culture, and the Qunari... umm... well, they are not human, so that's their problem.
