A true male-only species could only be a parasitic in nature - which would mean that they reproduce via .androgenisis. Unfortunately, androgenisis doesn't tend to make a good case for evolution. And even if it did, we'd have an entire species that existed by diddling with their equivalent of Fido the dog to continue their species; which isn't very attractive (or it might be to some of you, who knows).
I thought an Androgynous Sapient Plant species would be kind of cool to encounter.
An all male race would only work if from the beginning they shared their homeword with other species, that has both genders or just one. That way they could pull the "used other species to reproduce" card and wouldn't be just a genderswap asari, giving us an actual biological explanation. As people said, they could be parasites, needing to place their genes in other species, them they would develop stealing the victim's nutrients. Of course, that would ruin the potential for romances, unless they come up with a viable way for the victim to give birth without dying. Ether way, this would be a neat homage to ALIEN, and an interesting plot to explore.
I think it could be plausible if they combined these two concepts.
If there were two species of sapient humanoids that evolved together on the same planet: one is the dominant species with male/female sexual reproduction; the other is an opportunistic species that, for whatever reason (sci fi writing isn't my strength), has become all-male. They have the ability to reproduce with the other species' females, but the offspring produced are of their own male-only species. It would be a form of androgenesis via symbiotic co-evolution. Is it super-realistic? Not really. But it's no less unbelievable than psychic parthenogenesis, right.....?
Basically, if they wanted to make it happen, they could. And it they could draw upon 'real world' science to support it, the way they did with the asari. The "but it's scientifically impossible" argument doesn't actually hold much weight. Now, whether or not they would create a second mono-gendered species? Another story.
