after playing DA2:Legacy I started to wonder was Corypheus himself  being controlled in DA:I as was perhaps Meridith in DA2 by an as yet unseen enemy, the reason this I thought of this is the dramatic change to Corypheus' voice which was much to my surprise was very different, if this is the case then the puppet master had become a puppet for  a greater and far more insidious villain, one that is unknown to all, one that's been playing a very long game...?

The greatest villain of all is Red Lyrium! If someone was controlling Coryphreak, it was it!

No one controls the will that is Corypheus.

Unless by "control" you mean the palpable injection of Eros whose excess can not be contained in the performed theatricality of our dear magister.

Yeah the ending points to the idea he was a pawn in the scheme of things. We know Solas was responsible for giving him the orb in the first place, and that Flemeth/Mythal had been pulling strings behind the scenes as well for some unknown goal/vengeance. I don't know if he was being literally mind controlled, but I think maybe he was set up to take the fall, since Solas didn't seem to expect him to survive the activation of the orb.

I've talked to Dumat, well, not talked because he's not the talkative type, more like charades. So, I have it on good authority that Corypheus was not mind-controlled. Such a development is not logical, as Spock would say.

There may be a greater "evil" behind it all, so to speak, but I doubt Corypheus himself had any suspicion that he was being set up, or that he was directly controlled in any way. He was most likely just an unwitting pawn in someone's game.

I think so. Red lyrium has a mind of it's own and wants to spread ....Cory is made of Red Lyrium and is obsessed with spreading Red Lyrium.

The Four Horsemen Theory

I propose that each created character within the game is represented as one of the four horsemen. There are flaws to this obviously but its just a theory I came up with from observing aspects from the game. I am just going to focus on certain points of the games. Oh by the way if you see *SPOILERS* with another *SPOILERS* or *WARNING*It kinda means something from DAI is about to be ruined sorry kiddies. The default world state is what is going to be used as an example for this theory, I don't claim to be an expert here this is just an observation that I've made about the games, this is based on my own knowledge and is just for fun. By the excuse my spelling mistakes as I was in a rush to get this finished

________________________________________________________________________________
The White Horse – Conquest: Take the hearts and minds of men
Then I saw when the Lamb broke one of the seven seals, and I heard one of the four living creatures saying as with a voice of thunder, “Come.” I looked, and behold, a white horse, and he who sat on it had a bow; and a crown was given to him, and he went out conquering and to conquer. -Revelation 6: 1-2
The name could also be construed as "Victory," per the translation found in the Jerusalem Bible (the Greek words are derived from the verb νικάω, to conquer or vanquish). He carries a bow, and wears a victor's crown.

The Warden
Within Dragon Age: Origins the main goal is to use the Grey Warden treaties and bring all factions together to fight the darkspawn and stop the Blight from spreading any further. By doing tasks for each Faction eg picking a sucessor in the dawrf assembely you win the hearts and minds of the Darwfs to your cause. Hunting down the Urn of Sacrred Ashs wins the loyality of Red Cliff and the Arl in the landsmeet, deal with the werewolves etc. By the end of the game the player has amassed an army to their side by different means in order to conquer the darkspawn. By accounts within the Bible the the White Horse carries a bow and has been seen with a barbarous look with context to the game it can be translated as the rogue dalish elf. By the way the barbarous thing is from the 1962 film the ''The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse.'' Look it up if you don't believe me. By the crown given to him could mean the Warden treaties given to your character by Flemith to enable you the right to win both hearts and minds of the other races.
________________________________________________________________________________
The Red Horse – War: To cause a war of blood and civil war

When He broke the second seal, I heard the second living creature saying, “Come.” And another, a red horse, went out; and to him who sat on it, it was granted to take peace from the earth, and that men would slay one another; and a great sword was given to him.
Hawke
In Dragon Age 2 the whole game is about conflict and war. From the very start hawke and co are fighting their way past the darkspawn. By the end of the second chapter of the game kirkwall is set a blaze and hawke must fight through the quanari until defeating the Arishock then being named champion. By the end of the the game civil war errupts within the chantry and hawke picks the side of either the mages or templar order. There are other examples in quests that have the player deal with the mage and templar issues. In one quest the a group of mages are in the back of a cave by the conclusion your are to expose the mages or lie and say they ran off. Yes I know that the default hawke is a mage thats weilds a staff and War is often depicted carying a great sword however the the staff has a blade on one end. To look at it from a distance it looks more like a pretty big ass sword and by that I mean he isn't conpenseding for something else wink wink nught nught.
________________________________________________________________________________
The Black Horse – Famine: The cost of one over another
When He broke the third seal, I heard the third living creature saying, “Come.” I looked, and behold, a black horse; and he who sat on it had a pair of scales in his hand. And I heard something like a voice in the center of the four living creatures saying, “A quart of wheat for a denarius, and three quarts of barley for a denarius; but do not damage the oil and the wine.”
The Inqusitor
Often carrying scales Famine can be seen as a choice of what has better value the exile of an old order, the execution of a misguided tiventor mage who only wants to save his son or the life of an empress. Looking at it from a broader view the actions that are picked throughout DAI have a pretty heavy price tag for example Wicked Eyes and Wicked Hearts. *SPOILERS* As the player you can chose to save Celine and exile Gaspard with her military support is gone thus relying on the Inqusition for support.*SPOILERS* Though looking at Origins and lets say what happens in Orszimar between two sides trying to gain power over the other the result can be one side exiles the other to the surface as an example. Comparing the two the events in Orlais seem to have longer reaching effects as Briala governs the elves and their rights, Gaspard war with Fereldin and Celene is the culture of the land. Looking at Orszimar its one city compared to what could happen to a country. Your choices are always weighted up and always seem to have a negitive result no matter what.
*WARNING* There are spoilers for DAI here so if you don't want it ruined for you stop right about here. From this point on it is only theroy after crack pot theroy but if you would like to read on what else I think will happen and which NPC represents who then read on.

_____________________________________________________________________________________________
The Pale Horse – Death: Death on the plae horse
When the Lamb broke the fourth seal, I heard the voice of the fourth living creature saying, “Come.” I looked, and behold, an ashen horse; and he who sat on it had the name Death; and Hades was following with him. Authority was given to them over a fourth of the earth, to kill with sword and with famine and with pestilence and by the wild beasts of the earth.
???
Now this is where conspiracy theroy comes into play, I know yes shocker. In the next DA game your character starts out being betrayed by your buddies by having some giant bear maul you while they do a runner or something along those lines and bam along comes the spirit of vengence no not ghost rider, Flemith and gives you an offer you can't refuse. Your character dies in the first part of the next game then this can be seen as metaphorical death as your reborn as something new entirely. Hades in this case could be seen as the fade meaning that what happened in inqusition came to pass that the vale is gone. This can be also the second coming of christ in other words Andratae and yes I know they touched on that in DAI but I'm just spit balling an idea here.

The Next DA Game
By deffinetion Apocalypse means New Era and not an end to all things. It can be argued that the apocalyspe can be an end to life as we know it but something new takes its place. Btw Flemith/Mythal represents Jesus yep I know yeah that makes her super O.P. as fudge on her part while Solas/Dread Wolf is possible antichrist but in DAI Flemith and Solas are besties if you believe the ending of DAI. As the ending of the next game could be seen as both of them fighting each other for control of Thedas.
Okay Mythal/Flemith as Jesus aka Andratae well I read some where online that after the first Blight the spirit of Mythal which was in Dumot pocessed a human female after the Blight and through her knowledge spread of the ritual to create blighted babies across Thedas. She said it in game has played key parts in history when neseccery. In the bible it was said that Jesus would open each of the first four seals then each rider would recieve an item. She comes into contact with the main characters of each game at one point or another. She gave the Warden the Treaties, Hawke a locket and the inqusitor knowledge from the well of sorrows depending on your choice. The Christian apocalyptic vision is that the four horsemen are to set a divine apocalypse upon the world as harbingers of the Last Judgement or the more modern version has them cast as the villans from 1902 onwards due to popular culture and in the Jewish Encyclopedia Conquest is changed to Pestilence.
Yep Solas/Dread Wolf is the big A as in the anichrist yeah get your mind out of the gutter.Think back on alot of what he says and does over the course of the game the orb he gives to Corypheus(who represents the Beast) and the stories he tells to misdirect example if you bring him with you during Wiciked Eyes and Wicked Hearts and after the quest he gives a story to mislead the player about his time at court. Looking at Solas' card from post end game you can his shadow is cast like that of a demon and this can be seen as some one who is false and misleading.
The Old Gods are both the seals and the angels with trumpets in the bibles. During the Apocalypse seven angels each blow a trumpet causing destruction upon the earth, within DA lore this can be seen as an arch demon causing a Blight. Looking at each soul from the Old gods can be seen as a seal for maybe used to open an eluvian or a gateway to release the Elven gods. Near the very end of the book of Revalation Jesus guides his people to a new Earth and a new Holy city. In DA lore the golden/black city could be this if the veil was gone and what Solas talks about in Haven if spirits were as common as the wind.

Revelation 21
Then I saw “a new heaven and a new earth,” for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and there was no longer any sea. I saw the Holy City, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride beautifully dressed for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Look! God’s dwelling place is now among the people, and he will dwell with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God. ‘He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death’ or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.”
The Next DAI DLC
The next DAI dlc is the next Blight and as the Inquisitor you have to decide on how to deal with the archutect, the arch demon or if possible the final two that are left maybe if there is time and the dark spawn i.e. the chatty ones from Awakening well duh. Here at this point the The Blight has effected Anderfell and Tivinter and they ask for help with dealing with it and they offer alliance for your efforts. Your warden from the first game comes into play here with the choice between your warden and the Archutect over how to deal with the remender of the Blight and the dark spawn.

interesting theory but bioware's default warden is a warrior not a rogue. But in DA:O rogues were able to use bows. Not giving my stance on the theory just making a correction.

I don't really think you should use a voice change between games to support your theory, as there could be any number of reasons for that change. It's not like hearing Larius suddenly become coherent after you defeat Corypheus in Legacy.

The VA is the same. While I agree that his voice does sound a bit rougher and harder in DAI, I don't think that it's a hugely dramatic difference. If anything, the main difference is that the speech pattern he uses in Legacy is totally gone, replaced by a more contemporary way of speaking. You also have to remember that the Legacy Corypheus had just woken from a 1000 year sleep and was disoriented and confused, whereas DAI Corypheus has had a few years to acclimate.

Nicholas Boulton also changed his Xenon the Antiquarian voice, but I don't think that means anything either except that the devs wanted a change, or he couldn't quite get the same groove back of a minimal, one-off character from a few years previous.

I also disagree with your Meredith idea. I honestly think she simply went crazy due to the red lyrium. We know it's bad. We know it makes people crazy.

I consider it possible that Corypheus was guided without knowing it. Manipulated, in other words. Outright control I can't see, but I think the evidence points to an unknown power that promoted the Seven's original expedition to the Golden/Black City. Granted, it *may* just point to Bioware's lack of advance planning...

It's worth noting that the Well of Mythal, with its geas, includes the creepy whispers of Mythal's followers who have been added to it.

Corypheus consistently mentions 'dead whispers' when referring to the Black City. I can get behind the Magisters being hit with a geas, and the 1000 years of being in stasis managing to wear it off to some extent. He doesn't wake up thinking he's a darkspawn, he wakes up confused, thinking he's still Sethius. But he was active post-First Blight for about a decade before the Wardens caught him, and presumably was active during the First Blight itself.

*shrug* It's up in the air, but I can see it. Corypheus seems intent on getting to the Black City again, but he already picked up the Blight voluntarily from it. What else is there? *tinfoil hat theorizing intensifies*
