I never considered that, but you probably still are expected to be a reasonably fit guy anyway.

Iconic elf weapon? Why?

Not iconic per se... just how I idealize elf rogues. Fast, can shoot many shots on the move or jumping around, can pull out daggers at a switch. That's better for a shortbow.

It's been a while since I played my longbow archer, so I am not going to be too precise... I remember her being extremely weak early on, getting semi-decent by level 12 or so, and becoming quite strong by the end of the game. She always dealt little damage compared to, say, DPS mage Morrigan, but with levels she got more and more disabling abilities, and by the end she could quickly stun multiple enemies and keep them in that state for a while.

In Awakening, archers are sick. The Mother died faster than I could blink 5 times.

You have to dedicate a party to them in origins to maximize their benefits.

Usually I do Shale (Rock Mastery party buff) Warden Rogue Archer ( Song of Courage) Leliana (another Song of Courage) and Morrigan (Debuffer/Disabler/More Chaos)

I just remember being gear deprived during the entirety of origins. Definately not enough ranged crit gear to go around between Leliana and yourself. Also, you don't do as much damage as dual wielders. Or dps mages. Or arcane warriors. It's really for the novelty of it.

The real crappy thing about archers is that they get an aim speed decrease when haste is active on them. And most parties by the end of the game have at least one haste effect active at all times. That's why you build a party around them.

The DLC makes a ton of difference, but perhaps that's not a good argument. It should be better in the vanilla game.

Off the top of my head, vanilla gear: Long Sight from the Dragon is pretty noteworthy, but you have to kill a Dragon for it. Far Song is fantastic, but requires Owen killing himself and it's expensive as hell. Without DLC, it's the best bow around.

DLC wise: Sorrows of Arlathan, Cadash Stompers, Repeater Gloves from Ostagar. Just having the Sorrows alone is a great thing, so maybe people should play an Archer as a second character. Personally, I like to headcanon is that it's something the Dalish mother left in her chest. :P This should have been in the game itself. The City Elf gets that badass Fang dagger from her father.

Wasn't there a mod to smooth out Archery? I believe it was called Better Archery, it might have been removed from Nexus though. There is also a mod called Weapon rebalance over on the old Bioware Social. Just small tweaks to get yourself ahead if you don't mind that. There is also a mod that increases the damage of bows, armor penetration, range and makes crossbow scale correctly with dexterity.
