Asari. They live long, and a few could even stay active to monitor the ship throughout the three century journey and still have long lives waiting. You need people with science and technical knowledge around monitoring things to make sure the cryo-pods don't malfunction. They're good at maintaining peace and keeping the economy going. This race is a given.

 

Turian. Reliable and hard working. Will be good soldiers protecting the colonies once we land. Unfortunately R-dna makes finding a world difficult, unless Andromeda is R-dna, and the L-dna is at the disadvantage. We don't know. Take them along to hedge our bets.

 

Salarians. You never know when you'll need another genophage to manage a species in Andromeda.

Why no Humans? because humans are vital for any story being told to humans so no matter what happens they have to be in Andromeda so this way humans don't take a 'seat' on the ark they get here on their own.

 

Asari - having a long lived race that can mate with any species means your colonies have experience and a species that can breed with any race means your birth rate can be stabilized in a crisis.

 

Salarians - Highly intelligent short lived means fewer resources required before they can start increasing the population of the colony

 

Turians - They are highly organised and Paragon's of 'order.' They also provide genetic diversity. What if dextro-protein based life was the "norm" for Andromeda you want someone to be able to thrive in this environment. Or worse what if the environments of most of Andromeda were hostile to levo-amino based life? And everyone you brought in the ark was levo-amino based life? opps. Better to have at both forms of life for the best chance of your colony surviving. Since quarians are tied to their homeworld for their immunity no point bringing them along. The costs of housing levo and dextro's on the same ship is worth the increased chance of survival and exploitation of both types of environments in Andromeda.

 

It isn't just about how cheap you can build the ark but what can you do to give the colony the greatest chance of survival when they get their as that is more important than the cost of transport.

The protein problem pushes me more towards Asari, humans, and Salarians. I'm sure Turians and Quarians will build their own as well.

I wouldn't want to waste space/resources accommodating a dextro race sorry Quarian/Turians. Krogans are too savage, and I don't really care about the other Levo species.
