Imo the single most important "skill" is map awareness. Aiming, being a good teammate, spawn knowledge, there are tons of important aspects of it, but if you let yourself get surrounded constantly or gibbed from a Banshee b/c you can't keep up with what's where, then you're doomed

Honestly, I find this a weird question. There are a hundred different skills that can all enhance your performance in the game, but none of them are required, because you can always compensate the lack of one skill with other skills. A perferct player would be great at everything, but I've yet to see such a player.
Also, the division of the general skill of "being good at playing the game" into more specific skills always ends up being quite arbitrary, and you can keep dividing individual skills into more and more minute parts. For example, the skill of accuracy can be divided - and this is just one example - into such subskills such as shot timing, target acquisition, target tracking, target switching and target movement prediction. These subskills have varying importance depending on various factors, for example the skill of target tracking is not necessarily important at all when using Claymore, but it's extremely important when using Locust.
Anyway, for the sake of conversation, I'll list some skills that I'd consider fundamental skills:
- positioning
- timing
- spatial awareness
- instant decisions
- shooting accuracy
- knowing yourself (including your allies)
- knowing your enemy
- knowing your environment
- knowing fundamental game mechanics
- application of strategies
- application of tactics
- etc.
(Not surprisingly, this same list applies to every shooter out there.)
And then there are more specific skills such as:
- knowing specific game mechanics (i.e. Tactical Cloak mechanics, pizza running, oops pack invulnerability etc.)
- throwing grenades
- arcing projectile powers
- etc.
Techically shooting accuracy is a specific skill, but as ME3 is a shooter at heart, I consider it to be important enough to be listed among the fundamental skills. You may disagree.
I'd put "timing" under the "execution" section, same for "shooting accuracy".
I also don't think that general or specific game knowledge is a skill, but something that is memorized - what really matters is how you apply it. I'd also put application of strategies/tactics into the "execution" category.
I did forget about the spatial awareness. I'm adding that to the macro skills.
***
In terms of what is fundamental and what is not, I consider the macro skills to be fundamental to being able to play the game well on a consistent basis.
If there's a player who is mediocre at micro stuff, but his macro game is really good, he'll have solid performances day in and day out. Conversely, somebody with great micro game and crap macro game will be wildly inconsistent and can on any given day either outperform or underperform compared to the guy with mediocre micro and great macro.
I would say that what separates the good players from the best is being really good at both micro and macro, as opposed to being really good at only one of those.

Imo the single most important "skill" is map awareness.
That's the second most important. The single most important is knowing how to ragequit effectively.
Actually a lot of it is knowing the enemy, their behavior, aggro mechanics, animations, and how to take advantage of it by ragequitting.
Fixed.
I'd put "timing" under the "execution" section,
Timing is crucial to being able to ragequit effectively.

It's just the limitation of words, really; I was trying to express it concisely. What I mean is not just intellectual knowledge but intuitive knowledge and the skill to apply it. In other words: knowledge you have internalized so well you don't have to think about anymore, so that applying it in practise comes naturally. Not everyone realizes this, but that kind of application of knowledge is a skill.
Just like with the famous quote from Sun Zi: "Know yourself and know your enemy, and you will win a hundred battles." Of course it's not enough just to know, but you need to put it into practise.

That's pathing on the map/positioning
edit: combined with spatial awareness, I suppose.

Yeaah, maybe. I'm one of those people that just shoots at stuff (not in the head, obviously). I don't think about it too much. ![]()

I guess marksmanship would fall under the "excution" micro category...but that would be the only thing that springs to mind that wasn't directly referenced in your OP..."OP" ![]()
The ability to headshot mooks and even bosses to net that final killing shot increases efficiency and also score which, (as we all know from another thread) means EVERYTHING ![]()

Macro*
Map awareness and being able to move around smartly. This has already been mentioned a dozen times though.
Micro*
Hasn't been mentioned, so efficient use of your gun in conjunction with your powers. I.e. "reload hiding," particularly with low ammo count weapons, like most shotties or pistols. This is just a habit for me at this point. This can be done with ANY weapon, and ANY power.
