Dear Luke,

 

Can we know exactly what was changed with the blocking ability of Venatori/RT Swordsmen? The 1.09 patch notes said "decreased effectiveness of their blocking".

 

From my observations, they keep blocking multiple attacks (5-8 sometimes) in a row until you either cc them or they decide they want to attack you. Or die, that's also an option.

 

What I noticed that changed is:

 

1: The "Blocked" message does not pop up as often, but they still take no damage, even if the message does not show up.

2: They don't knock you down after several consecutive blocks anymore.

 

Could you please specify/explain what the "effectiveness reduction" did?

I noticed this too. Your attacks just don't connect.

Instead of jedi blocking it is jedi agility now.

Luke answered this in the beta forums a while ago. From what I remember:

 

- The blocking animation is deeply ingrained in the footsoldier and can't be removed without serious rework

- Therefore, all he could do was reduce the blocking animation length to 1 frame

Shame too. Because even though it won't block skills like they used to anymore, the damage is still negated. Maybe implementing some sort of threshold for how much damage they negate, and if the threshold is broken then they either get knocked down or their blocking goes on a cooldown.

Luke tried to keep em down but the Venatori Footsoldier is still keepin it gangsta.

Could you explain what this does?

 

From my understanding, triggering the footsoldier's blocking animation also activates an immunity state where all damage taken from front is negated until the animation ends. By reducing the animation length to a single frame, the immunity state also lasts shorter.

 

edit: correction, this is probably inaccurate and probably only applies to physical attacks, but I'm too lazy to test atm

I plaid archer a bit last few days and leaping shot is always blocked if they dont attack you before.(and hit you in the process).

What's worse is when they block my leaping shot from stealth and directly behind. They must have precognition as well.

What is the absolute worst, is when you carpet bomb an area with your alchemist, cloak, run into LOS of a group of them, decloak, say "Boo!", start kiting them back though your mines, and then, when you are 50 yards away, and around two corners, you get staggered locked from several of them blocking the explosions from your mines.

So does this mean we'll have to wait for another patch so this can be fixed properly or is this it? I didn't like the blocking before, and definitely not liking it in its current state either. :mellow:

I doubt they're going to change it, they tried for patch 8 and settled for that solution. The fact it's deeply ingrained into the footsoldier mean they would need to almost redo the whole "character" from scratch and test it all over again. That far into the game's life cycle? Forget about it...

Luke already explained he could not just take away their ability to block, as its built directly into their model/unit as a whole. What he was able to do was to set their ability to use it 'cooldown' wise incredible high, meaning after they block once, they won't be able to do it for a very large amount of time.

What's annoying me at the moment is shield guys, they knock you down one hit after another literally as soon as you get back on your feet, so annoying.

Foot soldiers even seem to be able to block Dragon Rage from behind if the claws reach all the way through to its sword. That's impressive.

Um... Guard Smasher increases your Guard Damage Bonus. It's pretty straight forward. It says nothing about breaking blocks.

Just have to cc them. its annoying yes. But war horn to the death payback strike all work well. I have been playing mostly warriors lately so not sure what else works well. oh and shield bash. Put em on their ass or fear them.

What's annoying me at the moment is shield guys, they knock you down one hit after another literally as soon as you get back on your feet, so annoying.

Agreed, at the higher levels they move so fast it is almost impossible to counter it with your own shield bash, pay back strike etc.
