What kind of protagonist would you like to be?

A sarcastic Paragade type, or Renegon. One that may get on their superior's nerves, but gets results.
A saucy scoundrel that still somehow has a conscience--although they'd prefer it shut up.
Have some fun. Cause some trouble. Yet when it gets down to where the bull shites, manages to do something half way decent and perhaps even slightly honorable.

I would prefer the protagonist and the pathfinder initiative to be part of an organization that is led by by multiple different species and not the alliance. I grew to dislike the alliance and humans over the course of the trilogy and I hope ME:A will focus on a multi-species operation and crew that consists of specialists from all kinds of fields - not just military personnel. I want the option for my protagonist to not be part of the military or particularly combat experienced and have a background like "xenobiologist/archeologist/geologist" or another maybe more techy supportive profession available.
What I would also like - but probably won't get - is to not be in charge of the ship. You're always the leader in this sort of game and I would like to get a different perspective for once and play as a regular crew member who's not above their squadmembers in rank, experience or specialness. Maybe you become second-in-command due to certain circumstances (so you have a limited say in things) or there is an option to candidate for the captain's position after they died and you can choose whether to put yourself forth or support another crew member - in any case I would at least want the option to not play a capable leader but maybe someone who's just not up to the task and knows it.
The N7 guy from the trailer gave me hope that maybe he'll be our leader, at least for a certain portion of the game, and we're not the boss from the get go, but even if that's the case I don't expect us to stay a regular crew member for very long.

Yes exactly this for me to.

If the character is a scientist with militar training like Mordin was, why not? Is not being a Mary Sue. Nowhere is written she must be the better on the battlefield, just good enought to survive and bring back result. Of course, with this kind of background, military characters and probably politician would not be very propense to listen to her like with Shepard, who was already a war hero before the game started.
I'd like something different from the stricht soldiar background Shep had. If the new character don't have all the numbers right from the start like Shepard (basically a Spectre after the mission/tutorial) but start with just commanding a little team or even better, as a simple subordinate, would be great.
Than there are differences between gameplay mechanics and character. The combat is in the hands of the players, as long as there is an explanation on why the character know how to use weapons, how good she is depends on how good are the players. But outside, in the role play elements, having the chance to have more funny/nerdy/not so brilliant dialogue options would give a chance to roleplay a certain character that is not on the stricht Mary Sue land.
I agree completely this would be really refreshing.

Anything that's not military. Merc, crime boss, pirate, vagabond, etc. is fine by me.

My absolute personal ideal? Someone both implicitly feminine and intellectual, who can effectively move and engage in combat with at least as much grace as any of her enemies or companion characters.
This sort of protagonist would certainly be called a Mary Sue, and often, but since that's the case with any RPG protagonist I won't worry about it.

Smart. For once.
Let the companions ask the stupid questions I should know the answers to.
This, I want a protagonist who has companions like those in Doctor Who, who are only really there to ask the incredibly obvious questions to make the hero look smarter for knowing the answers to them, as well as stand around being impressed whenever you do a smart or heroic thing... otherwise, what's the point of having them all?
I'd love to play as a character who doesn't rely on a smart sidekick for exposition, but instead actually gets to show they know stuff.

I'm on board with a scientist with combat experience. In fact, there's no reason a soldier today can't go back to school and become a scientist. They're not mutually exclusive.

A lot of NASA astronauts have backgrounds like this. Engineers and scientists, as well as Air Force/Navy pilots or something.

Good point. It's highly plausible that the 'best of the best' would be chosen to go to Andromeda just as the 'best of the best' are chosen for astronaut programs.

I would prefer the protagonist to be like the one in Dragon Age: Inquisition, from what I have seen in the trial version of the game at least. I like the much more neutral and toned voice and speech of the protagonist compared to Dragon Age 2 or the Mass Effect trilogy. I was only able to play 3 hours before I was told to buy the game, but I did not experience a single dialog where my player character made any objectionable comments, either automatically or based on wheel choices.

Someone with a good sense of humor. Think of playing as Joker except his skill in piloting is converted to leadership skill. Everyone reluctantly follows you because of your snarkiness but respects your ability to lead

I'd be okay with it if the character was both military and had a science background like Mordin, or was retired military. With the latter however it would also depend on what sort of ship or crew he/she is in command of. Someone who is retired military shouldn't be heading a military mission, so if the character is a civilian, the ship and crew should belong to some civilian organization as well.
In the past however when these discussions have come up I've seen people ask for a protagonist with a science background who has no connection to the military. I'd have a very difficult time suspending disbelief for that guy or girl doing the Rambo routine.

Someone who toes the line of morality and isn't afraid to do the thing that has to be done even in the face of casualties. Maybe someone who plays by their own rules without being too tied down by rules and regulations.

Options where I can pick someone snarky, funny, polite, rude, with a combination of all 4, though I probably wouldn't play a totally rude jerk.
I didn't mind the paragon/renegade/mix options, I like making decision based on the event. Also like the idea of not being in charge of everything and while I don't mind asking questions about some things, I would like the team to ask some of the questions.
I enjoyed the different backgrounds and the mission that was involved, especially "I remember me" so if we have options for picking something - military, scientist, teacher or something else, that could be interesting.
I may very well end up playing the same type of character each time, but I would like the option of playing different ones.

I want to be the kind of protagonist who doesn't commit suicide at the end. Who favors self-preservation over some insipid idea of compromising who they are to achieve a less than stellar outcome.
