Frankly i don't think this is that big of a deal. For story telling purposes you want aliens that are instantly recognisable as humans in alien suits except for one or two things that are alien. So that we can relate to them. A truly alien alien isn't relatable and loses its impact within the story. They are cool but they limit what stories they can tell.

having alien aliens for the sake of making aliens alien does little to further the narrative and thus isn't that important. Beyond the COOL factor. Which doesn't make good games. Truly alien aliens are best used as antagonists.

Do you mean like Star Trek aliens (Human in alien suits)? Klingons, Bajorans, and Cardassian types?

Definitely Human in appearance.

Physical or just psychological Human traits, or both?

In all seriousness though, Turians don't look human at all, nor do Krogan or Salarian. It's their behavior that makes them relate able to us, not their amino-acids or carbon/silicon-basing! In regards to new alien races that's the general vibe I'd go for, but for creatures for combat and scenery? Go nuts!
