If you raise a human to pull inuit sleds and give him food he will be happy.
If you pick a wild dog and try to do it, he will not obey you.

And we learned that its morally wrong to slave others humans, not sapient beings.

I'm not so sure about the happiness part.

Plenty of people who were born into slavery were unhappy with their lot. A good many would have been among Spartacus' rebellion, or any other of the servile insurrections that plagued the Roman Republic during that era. Prior to the American Civil War slaves who were also born into it often attempted to flee north along the Underground Railroad, and during the Civil War to Union troops.

Humans are the only sapient beings on our planet. If we ever meet other sapient beings in the universe, its likely the same basic 'human' rights we hold as sacrosanct would also be applied to them.

Aliens don't have culture, higher thought processes including the ability to create, religion, moral and norm systems, etc?

Animals*. It's getting late.

This is an Internet Forum. It's kind of a given that people argue the most insane Things here.

I encountered some insane stuff but "slavery is fine" is a new one.

On topic question. Does someone know Dominic Osoba´s nationality/origin (the new human ambassador)?

Well there is many things that separate humans from animals. Having culture, higher thought processing including creating things, religion, moral and norm system etc. Animals can do quite well, but they are simpler and I doubt we will see dogs building cities, doing politics and walking on moon- well without help of humans, anytime soon.

Apes have culture, norms, perhaps morals, have been observed to make tools on rare occasions. We can make the distinction, but there's no reason to think that we wouldn't meet aliens who fit more or less in between us and apes, which would be quite awkward. Or we might meet aliens that rate highly in some of things that we count as marking ourselves out from animals, but not others. And of course you've got AI - who are likely to be very good at building cities and walking on the moon, but not so much religion, and whose status as moral actors would be debatable.

It's also said that human's have come from same ancestors as apes. It's true that apes have something like that, but they are less advanced than humans in stone age. I guess they could evolve to status similar as humans, but it would take ages. In other hand most of alien races in ME are more advanced than humans at the moment (I say most, cause some weren't uplifted by themselves like Krogan, Vorcha (I think) and Drell so they might be around current humans). Anyways they are persons and not animals and thus should be treated according human rights.. or galactical alien rights where humans as one of the alien races are included.

Even if we meet aliens that are around stone age, middle ages or sth like that I think slaving them would be wrong.

Luckily that means you have not been visiting the darker corners of the world wide web.

The internet has raised teenage edginess and contrarianism into an art form.

You think that's bad, just wait. I'm sure the "Can I rape/torture/etc in MEA?" threads will show up eventually.

I think humans are in the minority in the game, however, we do see more.  Why is that? I just think they made the game more relateable that way?

Human slavery is not fine.

Why not? Cheap labor. Nigh limitless source from some places. Beats keeping them starving, or not being used effectively for the better humans to not use efficiently as tools.

Yes. Yes they are.

It's a term that's come up similar to Communism.

"Slavery is bad!"

"Communism is bad!"

Ok... but then why is it bad?

Because it represses the individual? What does that individual have to offer beyond their labor?

Intrinsic value? Please. That's bull. Some people are being all they can be flipping burgers. Their value in society and life should reflect that.

Let the strong rule the weak.

What other apes have as culture most people wouldn't really consider "culture", though it would meet the technical definition.

Although if we design AI, people will be very dissapointed with how ultimately human it will end up being. But that's because all we know how to design are human minds.

Last I checked the other diversity thread is arguing about whether the intent of a statement can be properly conveyed even if it omits part of its complete idea. So this might be an improv ... Well, it's in the ballpark of diversity  it's in the overflow parking lot two blocks over from the ballpark of diversity but somehow that's still something.

Because we have the lesser beings to do that.
And in Andromeda we will have aliens.

You sound like you want to destroy democracy there and start up some dictatorial state. Sadly, humans have already evolved from those times.

You are ok with slaving chimps but not aliens? They are 98,7% genetic equal to us, those aliens completelly different.
