Could ME:A have simply been a contingency plan?

For instance, when Reapers invade our galaxy, the Alliance/Council finally come to grips with the idea that we might not succeed in defeating them at all. So they order a fleet of ships consisting of Humans, Asari, Salarians, Krogans, Quarians etc to disengage from the fight and head straight for the Andromeda galaxy, no looking back.

The Andromeda teams head off to colonise that galaxy never knowing what happened to our system. This would set ME:A on the same timeline as the ME Trilogy only its set in a galaxy far far away :P

That would fit in with what Bioware have already told us about the protagonist not being Shepard and the game not being a prequel.

That's what I think happened. Mind you there are A LOT of reasons why people will have a problem with that explanation (good reasons, but I don't think incredibly major). This is actually the reason a lot of people think will be the foundation of the game's ability to avoid the endings.

It is my understanding that is take place well over a hundred years post Reaper war. So it is not running parallel to the first trilogy but far into the future.

How we got there is unknown but it could have been a plan by the citadel or it could have been a plan by a world that got cut off from the rest of citadel space by the reapers but not harvest immediately as vigil states it takes centuries to harvest the galaxy and it just so happened that this world had a research program that allowed for an experimental propulsion system to be used to escape the reapers.

We just don't know enough yet.

It was pretty clear that they couldn't make a sequel set in the Milkyway, the endings are too diverse. Personally I love the idea of playing a pioneer.

Can't say I'm a fan of the entire "Let's create some kind of ark and go to Andromeda!" idea. Not saying I can't see it being the case, just saying I would prefer if the origin of the ARKCON Pathfinding Initiative and everything else related to Mass Effect: Andromeda was set after the original Mass Effect Trilogy rather than during it. And I would prefer if it's purpose was less about "We must colonize to Survive!" and more about "Let's explore this ****!".

Well OP, you've just described "ark theory". We have been discussing this here for a year now. There are a couple good threads around if you want to participate.

Besides being an extremely obvious plot device, there are some clues that are suggestive that it is correct - most notably, the name A.R.K.C.O.N. (perhaps simultaneously meaning Ark Contingency, as well as being an abbreviation for a longer organization name, maybe?) and on the reveal trailer, on the destination screen that the N7 character uses, in huge white letters on the lower right reads a destination labeled "ARK".

I think its pretty obvious that Bioware is going the galactic contingency plan route at this point.
