I am having a hard time working out Katrina "Cat" Shepard's back-story because the timeline seems totally whacked. Katrina was born into a "naval family" in 2154, yet the System's Alliance was only formed in 2149. 2149 is also when they discovered how Mass Effect fields work from translations of the Prothean data on Mars. So the Alliance has had a total of 5 years to start building ships with Mass Effect field generators. I can't see how anyone goes from nothing to having a navy in just 5 years. (Actually, this is a problem throughout the ME lore: everything seems to be hyper-accelerated, as if humans had been members of the galactic community for a few hundred years, not just 30.)

 

So what's the deal? Did Cat's parents join the newly formed Alliance right after graduating college? Or were they a bit older and had served in some national space program before transferring to the Alliance? When did they join the Alliance? Right as it was formed, or somewhat later?

 

Help me work out some reasonable way of justifying the statement that Spacer Shepard grew up in a "naval family."

Just because the Systems Alliance, and by extension, the System's Alliance Navy, was formed in a short time period since discovering Mass Effect fields, does not mean that navies did not exist prior to that event.

 

The Systems Alliance is a conglomerate of nations, similar to the United Nations. You can assume that nations each had their own navy prior to the Systems Alliance Navy. In the Mass Effect universe, space travel existed before discovering element zero and Mass Effect fields, but FTL travel did not exist until that discovery. Kaidan mentions how there was "FTL wild goose chase research" prior to the discovery of the Prothean ruins on Mars.

So, do you think it would be best to have Cat's parents enlisted in some national navy before joining the Alliance?

I thought the same. They must have been in Earth's navy before the System's Alliance Navy was found.

I agree, there was obviously a spacefaring navy prior to FTL development. Humans had spread throughout the solar system, and space is the "ultimate high ground". Even without a unified Earth government, every large nation or conglomerate of nations would have invested in a spacefaring naval force.
