It seems like Bioware favoured items that inspired a different type of playstyle rather than stuff that was just straight-up beneficial.

My hard drive on my desktop, just went boom! However, I have my entries on my work laptop. Looking over the winners, I definitely didn't go BIG enough. Also, didn't even think about using "negative" effects on my items. Got so used to discarding most of them, in games like Dragon's Dogma, that it didn't even occur to me. *shrug* Ah well....here is my skimpy entries:

Description:
A buckle made from Ice Dragon Bone, stamped with a line parallel to the left side of a single chevron. The belt itself is crafted out of Ice Dragon Hide and backed with a felted cotton similar to material woven by the Avvar.

Background:
Daern'thal is not the only Forgotten One to secretly have priests dedicated to them. These profanes to the Elvhen Pantheon may not be worshipped openly, but a small number of Dalish have devoted themselves in secret, to such antitheses to the Creators. Some followers of Geldauran fled ages ago, to the most southern reaches of Thedas, often adopting practices similar to those of the Avvar found in proximity. The crafting of such rare material was reserved for the highest of Geldauran's priests.

Description:
Made of a quartz like stone, with regular spaced striation. The material is carved into an eagle with a bolt of lightning in its talon's grasp, fastened to a sturdy chain.

Background:
Made for Crispus Aetius, a wealthy general whose patron has been alluded to one of the famed Magisters who breached the Golden City, during the Ancient Age. What little is known of the warmonger, is shrouded in vague scandal. During campaigns, he was considered a brilliant tactician, who favored support mages versed in Primal Spells. When not engaged however, he apparently had an insatiable appetite for food, sex and gore, and often combined all three loves in week long debaucheries.

My KEs both in SP and MP usually wear a cooldown amulet, and that Andraste's Sacrifice amulet is what I've always wanted for a AW/KE. (Tanky mage times)    I suppose no word yet where these will appear...

I'm so confused. I didn't see half the abilities on the winners in the ability list we were "allowed" to use, and some are completely new to the game.  And how are they going to fit those descriptions into the game?

Edit: Apparently I missed the see the second page of the list...

 

Also, they don't have a belt. They could have at least had one amulet, two rings, and a belt so you could wear all the winning pieces at once.

 

And there is still no item in the entire game that increases mana.

 

Aaaaaand we don't know how/when they'll be in the game.

There was a really fun entry I didn't get to send, that would have been a bathrobe belt... but, well, I didn't have the chance to enter it and it never got written up.

Item Description:

 

Veilfire-etched memories awaken at a touch, as real as if its creator were present. An Emerald Knight of the Dales lies bleeding over the corpse of her wolf while her home burns behind her, but she smiles up at her husband and musters her strength to tear the amulet from her neck. She is dying of her wounds, and their daughter is missing—fled or fighting or dead—the Emerald Knight does not know, and could not say which she would prefer. Her husband is all that remains of a once happy life. It isn't fair that they must part, but she loves him and wants him to survive this war, perhaps even to find some happiness on the other side. She can sense the spirits stirring, drawn by the violence of the war, the “Exalted March,” as the shemlen call it, as if this carnage could somehow be holy. She reaches out to the Fade one last time, even as her husband's fingertips brush the amulet. “Please,” she whispers, “honor our love.” He does not know she is addressing the spirits until she concludes, “Protect him.” Her blood stains the amulet. Her husband cries out in anguish, but a spirit answers. She is still smiling as she dies. The memory fades, enabling a closer inspection. Crafted of the same unknown material often seen in ancient elven armor, the amulet is a simple disc bordered with the symbols of each of the elven Creators. In the center are inscribed elven runes, roughly translated as: “Let my love be your armor.” It is warm to the touch, and something about it suggests awareness.

Three years after she died in the Circle Tower at Lake Calenhad, Enchanter Flora's diary revealed the origin of this curious ring made of intricately braided fennec tail fur. When she was young, Flora was often left at home while her parents traveled, and she wasn't allowed to visit the nearest village to play with the other children her age. Flora was adventurous, though, and she wandered out in the fields and meadows despite her caretakers' warnings. One day while she was pretending to be a brave knight hunting a dragon, a talking fennec joined her game. She had so much fun playing and listening to his stories that she almost forgot to return home for dinner before dark. And so it went for day after day until her parents returned and she told them about the fox. They called her wonderful new friend a demon, and they made sure she didn't go outside to see him anymore. That night, the fennec leaped into her room through the window. “I can't visit you anymore,” he told her. “They'll kill me if they catch me. Don't be sad, I've brought you a gift. I'll always be with you as long as you have it, but if you tell anyone, it'll only bring trouble.” No one knows if she ever saw the fox again, but nearly seventy years after the fact, even after being drilled for her entire life on the dangers of demons, she had never told.

The fight seemed doomed until Jace collapsed the pillar on top of it with an explosive. The body was crushed, but this talisman survived. Perhaps the Inquisition can make use of it. Personally, I'd toss it down a dark hole."

Living in an era of roving werewolf packs is bound to make anyone a bit jumpy, but "Creely the Craven" was an especially cowardly sort. The elven rogue was the type to cower behind furniture at the slightest loud noise and grab small children as shields when threatened. Nonetheless, Creely was a hero of the early Black Age, as he could mask his approach like no other. More than one pack of werewolves met its end when Creely snuck into their lair, slitting their throats as they slumbered.

Before he was forced to go into hiding, the dwarf infamously known as Dworkin the Mad was obsessed with developing a lyrium-based equivalent to qunari gaatlok. Dworkin was also a smith of no small skill, however, and crafted this belt to aid in his research. Reports that the belt causes its wearer to break into fits of maniacal laughter are simply rumour and should be given no crehe he he ha ha ha ha HA HA HA!

The Mortilitasi are the most famed practitioners of necromancy in Thedas, but they are not the only such mages. The strange little creatures known as ghasts use corpse totems to create magical barriers and enhance their attacks, which is a subject of no small amount of controversy among the death mages of Nevarra. This amulet, which bears the grinning visage of a ghast, was reportedly recovered in the Vinmark Mountains, though its actual origins are unclear.

Enhanced Basic Attacks: The end of your attack chain now causes you to hit all enemies in the area with your flashing steel.

Little is known of the mysterious marauder who was once master of the Bog Unicorn. Was he a mage, or did he force some spellcaster to bind his steed with a spirit after it fell in battle? We can only be sure of his bloodthirsty nature, perhaps best exemplified by the inscription on a ring reportedly recovered from his corpse: "You don't ask why a storm breaks or a wound festers. Don't ask why I fight."

Backstory Text: Lucan of Qarinus was born to an Altus family during the late Steel Age and fled the Qunari occupation of the city with his family only a few years later. He became a studious and charismatic young man, but he lacked where it mattered most to his family. When Lucan failed to demonstrate any magical ability whatsoever, he was “encouraged” to join the Imperial Chantry and abdicate his status as heir to his younger sister. Whatever anger Lucan felt at these circumstances he channeled into religious zeal and became popular among rebels to the occupation for his colorful sermons describing the suffering due the horned invaders.

When the call for the Exalted Marches against the Qunari came in the Storm Age, he put aside his Chantry robes in favor of armor and an amulet engraved with the image of Andraste in flames. Local legend has it that Lucan’s intense faith caused the heathen Qunari to burst into flames in his presence during the liberation of his home city. He was killed a decade later in Rivain while boarding a fleeing dreadnaught that, ironically, caught fire and exploded when the flames reached the Gaatlok stores. His blackened amulet survived the blast and supposedly the fires of his fervor were seared into it, still yearning to burn enemies of the faith. That’s the popular story. More scholarly observers note that Lucan maintained correspondence with his sister, who was a personal friend to prominent members of the dwarven Ambassadoria involved in the lyrium trade and enchantment research.

Backstory Description: Discovered among the ruins of the Temple of Sacred Ashes after the Breach, this amulet proves to be a puzzle as to its purpose and original owner. A simple, silver circle upon a silver chain, it is imbued with powers that would benefit both a mage and a warrior. On the back of the pendant, a short inscription: J + T. The prevailing best guess is that it once belonged to a set of star-crossed lovers, a forbidden union between a Circle mage and a Templar both present at the ill-fated Conclave. Though which of the two it belonged to is a mystery, as is whether the amulet was one of a matching pair.

 

 

Entry 2 (the joke entry, now made funny since I FINALLY unlocked a Superb Ring of Life-Drain last weekend... after 9 months of gameplay ):

Backstory Description: In the southern reaches of Nevarra lived a champion dragon hunter. One day, the warrior grew bored of simply slaying the beasts in the name of her lord, so she set about raising a few and training them to race as horses do. However, one trophy from her questing days continued to elude her: a Superb Ring of Life-Drain. Despite her achievements in gaining high dragon trophies, that one accessory seemed to fall into the hands of every other warrior but her.

 

In northern Nevarra ruled Ser William, a rival to the Dragon Racer’s master. Knowing the champion’s one missing trophy, he thought it good fun to set his court mage, Enchanter Lucas, on a task: to enchant every Superb Ring of Life-Drain entering the country with a charm that would make it appear visible to everyone but the Dragon Racer. As a side effect of the enchantment, the rings also gained stealth bonuses for their bearers.

 

If you have just received this accessory and codex entry, then congratulations! You can rest easy knowing that you are not, in fact, the unlucky Dragon Racer of southern Nevarra.

Backstory Description:  The Qunari are not generally known to be a whimsical folk. However, one Beresaad company became rather infamous for a dancing, singing soldier in their ranks. He was fond of taking his large, two-handed greatsword and whirling around the battlefield – a dance of death and destruction. As his skills grew, he sought to extend them by crafting a belt that would not only make him even deadlier, but also allow his voice to carry across the battlefield and inspire his fellow Qunari to strike harder and survive more blows. It is unknown what ultimately became of this strange Qunari warrior, but the Troupe of the Qun carries the memory of the rather unique way in which he satisfied the Demands of the Qun.

Backstory Description: In Orlais, everything is about appearances and reputations. Even among its thieves, of whom the most successful have taken to leaving “calling cards” to identify their hits and spread their infamy. There is the Wet Bandit, who leaves robbed mansions soaking wet with buckets of water sloshed onto beds and couches. Another of note is the Flaming Cod, who replaces one stolen item of great value with a fish set on fire. And then there’s the legend of the Voleur Coupe-Vent, who had a rather special way of subduing mansion guards with the power of overwhelming odor.

 

 

Entry 5:

Name: Irony

Backstory Description: Farius was a city elf recruited into the Grey Wardens during the Fourth Blight. Lithe and sneaky, he proved to be an exceptional rogue and after the Blight ended, he became instrumental in training new recruits. However, Farius was disappointed to see many of the young rogues, particularly the duel-wielders, trying to stand toe-to-toe with the warriors. “The frontlines aren’t your place,” he proclaimed. “Let those larger lugheads take the beating for you. Your strength is in striking from where you’re never seen.” To further drive home the point, he gave each Grey Warden rogue a special amulet: it protected from the front, but was best utilized from the back and flank. The rogues who discovered its trick were successful, while those who continued trying to battle head-on were met with more pain than was expected.

 

 

Entry 6:

Name: The Serpent’s Scorn

Backstory Description: This ring was created by Sylvia Mathon, the wife of a powerful Tevinter magister in 5:26 Exalted. When she discovered her husband’s affair with a rival magister’s wife, she sought her revenge by convincing a long-unrequited suitor of hers to assassinate him and earn her hand. The ring, she said, would dispose of the body and any evidence linking him to the crime. It did just that when the magister’s body exploded into little bloody bits upon death. However, power plays are a fact of life in Tevinter and as her new lover lay sleeping, Sylvia stole back her ring. He met with a most unfortunate and grisly accident while experimenting with a new magical rune the next day, a tragedy none could make heads or tails of due to the resulting explosion. Grieving Sylvia, now twice a magister’s widow, inherited the lands and fortunes of two powerful Tevinter families.

Name: Thunderstruck

Backstory Description: Around the time of the first Jaws of Hakkon, a rival Avvar tribe sought to flee rather than fight them. Aiming for the warmer, swampy climes of the Crow Fens in what is now the Exalted Plains of Orlais, the thane found a seemingly suitable home for her people. Not long after the tribe settled in, a storm dragon brought devastation and ruin to their fledgling hold. Feeling guilt that her path had brought them to apparent death, the thane went forth alone to confront the high dragon. She came back changed, commanding the power of the heavens and was henceforth known as Thane Treya Storm-Bringer. Though the hold was destroyed ages ago, her ring survived.

 

 

Entry 8:

Name: The Swiftness

Backstory Description: Most Dalish clans are content to remain far from civilization, only interacting with the other races when they absolutely must in order to negotiate passage through lands or to trade for supplies. However, there are some – whether through desperation or a desire for vengeance – that have turned to banditry. Robbery, looting, and murder are not too far to fall if it ensures the survival of their clans. The instigators of this movement call themselves The Swiftness and enhance their stealthy skills through ironbark amulets that make them quicker and deadlier. Not much more is known of them, for any Dalish caught in the act deny any knowledge save for one curse: “May the Swiftness bring your fate.”

 

 

Entry 9:

Name: Boom-Boom

Type: Belt

Backstory Modifier: Boom-Boom passed through at least two owners, if not more, during its lifetime. Its creator was Dakrit, a dwarf with a penchant for explosives. He created the belt in order to provide entertaining displays for the thaig when celebrations were in order. Armed with a bow, Dakrit could shoot an arrow far into the air and have Elemental Mines explode out into decorative lights for the crowd gathered below. Taking things further, he modified the belt to shoot a concoction of grenades into the air after the arrow:  Antivan fire grenades, jars of bees, and confusion grenades. Unfortunately, when those mixed together, it ended with a swarm of flaming, confused bees and wasps attacking the crowd. Stories of that fateful night are muddled, but the one common thread is that Dakrit and his belt were never seen again after that incident. At some point, the belt resurfaced in the hands of a mage who enchanted its charges with a spell to cause even more explosions. Now, Boom-Boom would appear to have seen better days and its ability to self-launch grenades seems questionable, but it certainly still has a lot of slots for them.

Name: Kuiper’s Belt

Backstory Description: Kuiper was a dwarf who made a living moving goods between Orzammar and the Avvar holds in the Frostback Mountains, out to the furthest reaches of civilization. It was a very cold, harsh, and long path, but he made it faithfully each time and came to be highly regarded by the Avvar. They fashioned a belt in the image of their god of winter, Hakkon, to help guard him against the cold. With each successful trek of his trade route, Kuiper grew bolder. The one day, as if Hakkon’s war-lust had taken hold, the dwarf set off to face down the ice troll, Hryngnar, who had terrorized part of the Frostback Basin. Kuiper was never seen again, but his belt eventually washed up near a fishermen’s village.

If some men just want to watch the world burn, best to give them something positive to focus that on, yes? What eventually became of the mage and his fires is lost to the depths of time, but his ring remains, burning softly with a desire to consume more enemies in wreathes of flame. Beautiful, haunting, dancing flame.
