It's kinda odd how much cultural impact Mass Effect has, considering it's never really sold particularly hugely.

The Internet gaming community and the wider market don't exactly march in lockstep.

Flash in the pan with minimum effort. It's a miracle that people still remembers it with such warmth.

Madden has been around a long time and the US is a huge market.

how does FIFA only have a 1m lead over Madden?

Because the Madden Franchise is older?

I always heard FIFA was the big cash cow for EA. I guess that isn't so.

Well, a lot of WoW players practically purchase the same game every month for 10 years now with the expansions (what a thievery), im curiuos where it would be on this chart if subscriptions mattered as purchases (about every seond sub).

Because number for Fifa is 2-3 years older.

99M for Madden is from this 2013 article http://www.engadget....ting-starts-ma/

Fifa 100M is from 2010 http://www.businessw...en#.Vaa7svntlBc

All those sale numbers in OP are from Wiki

That's because it hasn't had that impact. Step outside the Bioware bubble for a second. It's not that ubiquitous.

Not really. Dragon Age is very limited to the Bioware bubble. Mass Effect isn't. That's why people were trying to get Aaron Flynn to talk about ME instead when he was promoting DAI. Despite DA selling quite comparably to ME.

ME isn't known outside of the gamer/geek cultural bubble, but it still has had a cultural impact within that bubble that exceeds its sales

FIFA is almost certainly their biggest game, is in the sales charts year around, and brings in astronomical microtransaction revenue.

This infographic isn't the best indicator of current franchise relevance.

I do agree with the latter. The ending controversy was even referred in an HBO comedy series:

I don't have HBO, but from what I've seen of that show, it seems very inside-jokey... it's got a niche, but it isn't wide cultural impact. Same with Lena Dunham's show... it's got it's own niche too, but it isn't that popular.

A shame that games like Halo, ME, Tom Clancy (Ghost Recon in particular) and Zelda are so low

This chart is incredibly misleading. The reason Mario's circle is so huge isn't because mario is a bestselling game, but because there have been literally 20+ mario games. All this chart really shows is which franchises are the oldest and have the largest number of games.

Just look at Warcraft, that contains probably the best selling game in the history of games (WoW) and it is a tiny bubble, why? Because there are 6 Warcraft games (1, 2, 2 xpac, 3, 3 xpac, WoW). So despite the fact that it is one of the best selling games the size of the franchise limits the size of the bubble.

As such this chart is really very useless.

That isn't all that's wrong with this chart, the sizes of the circles are quite misleading as well. The sales numbers seem to be proportional to the diameters of the circles, not the areas of the circles. The "Wii" circle, for example, represents twice as many sales as the "Fifa" circle, but it is 4 times as large.

On an unrelated note, why has Sonic sold 9 times as many games as Metroid? Are gamers really this terrible?

There have been 15+ Zelda games but its circle still has a rather disappointing diameter.

Some of these look accurate enough. Uncharted was confirmed as 20 million sold by Naughty Dog once. So ME's smaller "circle" looks appropriate in comparison (apparently 14 million).

Also, counting all of the different Mario games listed here, and not counting "other Mario games", it has at least 76 titles.

Madden is primarily sold in a market with a bunch of money to spend on video games. FIFA's majority audience is in countries which didn't even officially get consoles until recently (if they even have them yet).

I bet 60% of Dragon Quest's sales come from Togashi.

Tetris. Damn bar never wants to spawn!

For whatever it's worth, Matthewmatosis makes the case that Tetris is the perfect video game. It is completely stripped of any cultural references whatsoever, so in a real sense its appeal is universal. It will always be challenging, since you're guaranteed to lose eventually. And if you altered any of the core mechanics in even seemingly small ways (i.e. using figures composed of five instead of four blocks, etc.), you would severely compromise the functionality of the game.

But yes, it would be nice if the bar appeared a bit more often. :)

Tetris actually is a really amazing game, same with Minecraft to be honest, at least as far as mechanics and getting you addicted go for sure.

Honestly that list is sorta screwy but many of those games are very fine games.

Heck Call of Duty 1 was an awesome game, sorry it birthed so many horrific children but the original was pretty great to play for it's time that pretty much clobbered the available competition at the time such as Medal of Fail.
