Think about it, to pass the test to become the knight enchanter you have to create a hilt for a weapon that is not physical, and hits through all blocks. I am probably not the first one to realise this, but when I did it just seemed so cool. Plus the sound effects of the blade are cool.

Why won't Bioware release a remastered version of Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic for digital download already? And Jade Empire while they're at it? Some of their best games, but I have a broken original Xbox and they look like ass on a 42 inch plasma. I want to play them again...

A regular person can wield a lightsaber, though. Not as well as a Jedi, but they can still use one. Only a Knight Enchanter can use Spirit Blade.

A spirit blade is a hilt with a bound spirit within it. There is no implication that Knight Enchanters have a unique ability or characteristic that allows them to use spirit blades exclusively.

Mana. Normal people in Thedas don't have mana, and mana is what is needed to draw power from the fade. Your mana powers the hilt's ability to make the blade. No mana, no spirit blade.

The description for the hilt infers that it is the spirit that infuses mana into the blade, which is why I didn't say mages-only. Nonetheless, even if it did require the ability to use magic, that still doesn't mean Knight Enchanters are the only people who can use Spirit Blades, since any mage could feasibly use one.

Ah, right. Yes, any mage can use one. But only a few could use one right. I'm pretty sure KE's are given martial training similar to that of a warrior to know how to use proper form and technique for using the sword right. Not enough to make you a master swordsman by any means, but at least enough sword expertise to know about as much as a typical Inquisition soldier. They don't need to be master swordsmen because their magical abilities and other KE abilities counteract the flaws in their style that an actual swordsman couldn't afford to have (like missing a parry for a swordsman means you could be stabbed and killed whereas a KE will just ignore their own failed parry because their barrier will block it anyway). But yeah, I can't imagine no martial training is given, and that is training that just about no mage will likely have. And there's more to the style than just the blade. You have to learn how to gain mana back from damage dealt, how to do a fade cloak, how to explode a fade cloak when inside an enemy, how to properly direct your mana into your blade to allow it to deflect projectiles, how to enhance their barrier power over most mages... A normal mage can't just pick of the blade and start kicking ass with it, they'd have no clue how to even swing it with the right sword form let alone advanced KE skills.

Right, just like a regular person can use a lightsaber, even though it is extremely inadvisable.

Exactly. Can't have the Inquisitor cutting his/her own hand off by accident. Imagine if it was the anchor hand? GAMEOVER!

I think there is more to the knight-enchanter training than just martial arts and how to get the spirit blade. Sure in the game its rather quick but I would think that you need training on how to properly form a blade rather than have spirit energy just gushing out from it. Plus there is the skill of combat clarity, and other skills which require high focus and ability to sustain it during close combat.

Also knight-enchanters are meant to lead from the front so they probably require quite a bit of military training in order to work well with warriors and the like.

So sure knight-enchanters are not jedi exactly but they do have quite a few similarities. And since they are based on elven arcane warriors that seems even more similar.
