Sorry for the incoming walls of text.  The tl;dr version is:

Is there a way to play this game at this point without leeching and/or long-term frustration?

I just started playing DAIMP having hesitated from an early purchase of DAI due to the many negative MP comments about it.  I play on PC and did the last weekend challenge and while I see several others have said it was really good in relation to other challenges, I can see why this game/community might in effect encourage a new player to find something else to do with their time.

I began playing in Routine and found that other players had gear that would basically one-shot everything, making it difficult to contribute at all.  With this challenge in order to get the credit you had apparently had to land the killing blow which for a new player, playing with others that have OSK gear, made it next to impossible.

I’m not sure why BW would structure it this way in a coop game and long-term players would prefer to dominate routine lobbies but perhaps there is no real benefit in having new players stay?

I found in order to get these kills I had to solo Routine which was also incredibly frustrating.  Must have taken me five minutes to kill a single arcane horror with a crappy sword provided I could stay alive that long.  I got the challenge done (took many hours) but overall the game was most unsatisfying.  And the chest rewarded after all that work was underwhelming.

I know in ME3, one could start out with powers that alone allowed one to contribute like a long-term player.  I enjoyed that MP game so much I purchase the game a second time to start a manifest anew.  I really appreciated getting an excellent rare character and ultra-rare weapon in my first pack, which even at level 1 was enough to allow me to be contribute in a meaningful manner.  ME3 had a good balance to immediately connect a new player to the game and provide the incentive to grind over the long-term while having fun doing so.

However, I see in another thread, BW stated that now the DAI RNG has been structured to prevent any new players from getting the ultra-rare level gear until they have “roughly 300/800 items respectively” so I guess the new players will be forced to suck for long periods when playing with players with the OSK gear in Routine.  Since there is not that much gold awarded in the lower levels of play, it appears to be quite a grind to even get the chance to contribute in any meaningful way when playing with any long-term player.

As a comparison, I know I could not imagine wanting to play in Bronze or Silver once I was higher level in ME3 and at a level where I was soloing Gold and Platinum but that doesn’t appear to be the case here?  On the other hand, before this weekend I had a few lobbies with new players and all of us never even made it to extraction.  So the balance seems extreme.  Either you leech and have very little contribution or have trouble even completing the basic level of play.  Perhaps I missing something and have made a misinterpretation of what I have experienced so far?

When I checked my Friends list, which has a significant number of people, I see many others have also played this game but only to a single digit on the leaderboard.  I barely started and I’m already nearing the top of my Friend’s list with my low double digit numbers so it seems others I have played with, many of whom were excellent players in ME3, had a similar experience with DAIMP.  I had to LOL at several friends that were under 5.  They must have played a couple of zones in a single game and called it quits.

I feel bad as it appears BW put much effort into this game but perhaps an early exit from MP is the smarter path to take.  I’d like to give it chance but don’t want to spend time leeching off others and it seems there is not much alternative other than a very humbling grind to 300/800 items to even get a chance for gear many others playing routine already have.

Is there a way to play this game at this point without leeching and/or long-term frustration?

I failed quite a few routine games when I first started... (I'm not telling you how many )

I never realized how poorly funded and equipped this Inquisition was until I had to play as one of the agents with Inquisition gear

It is a bit of a slow start until you get better weapons, but I think the new buffed armor and better chests really help you transition from routine to threatening to perilous.

Last weekend's challenge wasn't really friendly for new players, but it's usually not that bad, I promise.

Yes, the way is to play for fun - not to be #1 on the leaderboard.

If you start playing any game simply because you want A_Phat_Loot_Item_001 then obviously you will see constrictions rather than options.

You do not need end game gear to contribute, so starting up a game like this with that mindset is pure poison to your enjoyment, because you will keep repeating that negative mantra.

Kills also doesn't really mean awhole lot, you could very easily play either Keeper or ZITHER! (If you got him in your free chest) in either threatening or Perillous once you learned the abilities those classes have, and you could easily contribute to the teams success.

Remember, we all started with an Inquisitor weapon, and went from there.

One of the issue with routine/threatening/perilous/nightmare/hearbreaker difficulty settings are that they are not a cmooth transition but rather a jump. So you will find people in each difficulty having a hard time or having a easy time but not ready to move up the difficulty level. this plus playing preference will explain some of the more advanced player you run into, but this will remain in each difficulty jump. So don't be put off by it too much.

I would recommend playing Keeper or Virutoso(Zither) until you collect the crafting materials and or weapons to play other classes. Promote, try different builds. Prioritize crafting higher quality armors.

Leave before it's too late.

After you will play and you will play a lot but you won't know why.

And that's evil imo.

So leave.

My advice would be to have a mic and talk to people. There will be groups where no ones talks back, don't worry about that, there will be some that do. There are some very cool people in the PC scene and they will go out of their way to help people, trust me, they did it for me.

So make friends as much as possible, get some gold, get some decent weapons and move up to threatening as soon as you can. Once there you will be exposed to a lot more people, rinse repeat.

My handle here is my in game handle, drop me a line sometime and I will join you for a few runs.

It can be pretty frustrating for new players.  Just started a new profile to start over again (for something to do) and I totally relate.  What you said is how I felt too as a 'new player'.  You just have to keep playing, buying chests, and eventually receiving the weps and accs that will make all the difference.

Also, yes, the weekend challenge was particularly difficuly overall, and especially for new players.

These people shouldn't be in routine, but what do you do...

If you can get keeper/ele or virtuoso you can contribute a lot on harder modes even if your weapon is shitty

Other than that it is always a little hard to start in a game that's alrdy somewhat established and I honestly don't know how large our "beginner" demographic is so maybe it is a bit lonely.

Don't listen to the trolls though, if you like it, play, if you get bored, stop

just that simple

Here's my thread, relevant for new players

You can't really control it if a player is one-shotting everything on Routine. Chances are those players have the stats/gear to be doing that much damage and take so little - though they'll be playing on the higher difficulties anyway. If those players are on Routine, they are likely trying to go for some quick runs to obtain a character banner/challenge completion.

As someone pointed out earlier, using a mic can do wonders. You'll never know when you run into that person who is willing to help you/explain things about the game as you're going through the zones, and who knows, you might actually enjoy chatting with them. It makes the gaming experience more enjoyable to be able to talk, and that's coming from someone who was (and still is) more of a lurker/not mic much.

Remember, you always contribute in some way. Even if you're running a Keeper and using Barrier on yourself/your teammates, you are providing team support, as well as extra experience everyone at the end of the match.

If you're struggling on finding 'decent' starting characters to use early on, I have a couple of suggestions from personal experience. Mages in general feel pretty solid, especially any mage that can provide Barrier. The Legionnaire can be a monstrous tank with a solid, defensive build. He was the first character I could solo Threatening with back when I started playing this game, and that was back when Threatening was more difficult.

I would also look up some character builds via the threads here/videos to get a better idea on some builds to try out. From there, branch off on your own to find out what builds you enjoy more/suit your playstyle.

Feel free to hit me up sometime if you're on the Xbox One, and I'd be happy to help.

Thanks for the feedback.  It is helpful information.  After an hour or so of playing several games watching enemies disappear before I could even reach them, I checked my weekend challenge progress and didn’t have a single point.  I thought oh boy, that’s not good, let me see if I can solo this.  Tried a level 1 Mage and couldn’t even clear the first group of enemies.  I thought wow, this seems hard starting out, useless by myself or with others.  But I see this is a common experience.

I definitely don’t want any short-cuts, to leech, and don’t mind and prefer grinding if it’s enjoyable.  Just trying to grasp from those who when before what that is going to be.  Much appreciation.

Once you get a few weapons and accessories and a few levels you will be okay.  Any new player with no levels and no gear will have problems soloing even routine unless you are a beefy sort.

I very much understand your pain, but it will disappear rather quickly.  Once you get a few good items, the game opens up quite a bit.  You should get a decent weapon or two soon.

If you're afraid of being a leach, don't be.  I don't pay any attention if a player is helping all that much unless we run into constant problems.  If you want to contribute, barrier is your friend.  You generate support xp for the entire party with it.  Just barrier up whoever is doing the killing, and everyone wins.

edit- And they just revamped the chests, so you should have a much easier time getting at least decent gear

I have to second, third, etc...what others have said.  I tried playing as a legionnaire when I first started out, as I always start games as a melee player, but I/it sucked.  Keeper was definitely the way to go, buffering my team, electrocuting all the things...destroying pots with Mind Blast...being ranged allowed me to get a better idea of what was happening in the dungeon.  Plus, I have a friend who is ridiculously good at these types of games, and shared a lot with me.

If you want to have fun, there is plenty to be had in DAMP.  With my whopping 7 promotions (yep, got another one this weekend! lol) you can see I'm not about the grind so I have no advice to give on that front.

And yes, from what I've heard, new chests are much better...though I'd still kill for some cotton...any kind, just...sighs... :(

And, my favorite part of playing DAMP is being a part of this crazy community.   :P

Leach my young Noob!
Get that keeper to high levels anyway you can.
Keep it there so you can run Threatening and collect gold to buy loot.
You'll want a bow that has Crit chance so you can contribute with Archer on Threat and promote him always.
Make friends and let them carry your lvl 1. We all do it.
Unlock Arcane Warrior so you have a class to solo with when you can't find a game.
Salvage anything you don't use, save cotton though. You'll want to kill some Dragons. They drop great loot sometimes.
Add any players as friends you regularly see and stay in lobbies.
Read everything in these forums and keep asking questions.
Enjoy

Vlad,

Welcome.

Spot on with the DAIMP v. ME3MP analysis.

This game, while suffering in comparison, is getting better, and it seems as if the devs are going to continue that trend.

Like ME, get a friends list, play with them. That will solve the overgeared player on routine problems.

There are some very cool people and good players here in the PC community. Some are even both.
