I thought you told QMR your "English sucks" <_< and that's why your wording and grammar is bad, yet you lecture me that I am not using proper English wording for what lesbian's "prefer" (synonymous with like better, would rather (have), would sooner (have), favor, be more partial to;

or choose, select, pick, opt for, go for)...no you're right "only like". Gotcha!  ;)

I've always found something off about Asari, in an "uncanny valley" sort of way. The only Asari I ever thought was attractive was the Asari counselor.

Seeing all these posts made me wonder, is Bioware proud or horrified that there games have become conduits for discussing all manner of gender and identity social issues? I suspect anthropologists 300 years from now will be using Bioware games as original sources.

The probability of two completely alien species having nearly identical anatomy to each other via convergent evolution is, quite literally, astronomically vanishingly small.

HOWEVER, there are up to 400 billion stars in this galaxy alone, and at least that many galaxies in the visible universe, equating to a MINIMUM of 10^24 stars.

That is a septillion stars, on the low end. Try to wrap your head around that. You cannot. Go ahead, try. Nope, still can't.

Meaning, the universe is SO vast with SO many stars, that while humanoid intelligent aliens are probably extremely rare, on the universal scale of things, throughout the time expanse of 13.8 billion years, they are probably "common", in the sense that our human anatomy is statistically, most likely NOT a one time fluke.

And who knows, the universe is vast enough and old enough that there very well could be a species of humanoid, parthenogenetic, blue skinned females with mammalian in appearance secondary sexual characteristics that has existed at some point in time, exists now, or will exist before the universe ends.

And THAT is why the Asari dont particularly bother me from an anatomic realism standpoint. Unlikely? Yes. Impossible? Far, far from it.

That said, the biotic capabilities of them are obviously impossible.

And what does bother me is not the existence of anthropomorphic aliens in mass effect, but that nearly EVERY alien species is anthropomorphic. Although obviously, for gameplay this is a necessity. At least we still had the Rachni, Elcor, Hanar, and Thorian...

That's not how statistics really works. The underlying assumptions are problematic.

Honestly, the only assumptions are that life is commonplace in the universe (probably true) and that convergent evolution occurs on other worlds (probably definitely true).

As a biologist, the two are hardly assumptions at all to me at this point. Scientifically, although both still unknowns, they seem to be certainties from an intellectual standpoint.

The assumption that life is commonplace is a radical one, but that wasn't my objection. Instead it's that you're handwaving away the statistical improbability of the human form itself developing. It took - on Earth - something to the effect of a billion years, and there were a number of (we assume) not entirely random factors that went into its development.

Convergent evolution isn't much of assumption - it's saying nothing more than similar environments might over time produce similar forms by (notionally) dissimilar means.

But it's the first part of the analysis - even apart from the probably of life existing in the first instance - that's the issue.

I think the asari (especially in me1) were supposed to be blue space babes, but by sheer chance it seems they ended up subverting it completely. Probably because bioware realised that you can't have such a one trick pony.
I just think it's a shame they jumped on the humans are special bandwagon (reminds me of that scene in independence day where no one can do anything until the American's do something. The scene with the british guys going ' by jove, it's the Americans using more code!' always makes me laugh. Terrible film that) as being the underdog is always much more interesting.
Humans should be barely tolerated, let alone sitting at the top table.

One of the devs (Patrick Weekes?) said Turian females do not have boobs, but have chests like the males:

Spoiler

That might be Nyreens's version of boob plate. Sexy ain't it?

On-topic! I would like to see a F/F-only Asari romance in ME:A. Give this hypothetical Asari squadmate preferences. She likes Asari and Human females only, which would make sense that she would be evolutionarily programmed to desire something resembling her own species.

Yes these ⬆️ Also and I can't stress this enough please for the love of the goddess leave the Asari alone they are my all time favourite race to be created in sci-fi. And personally the only thing that I find silly about them is they all have the same ridiculous large boobs but that's just me so please leave them be thank you.

The assumption that life is commonplace is a radical one

Not really. Earth is about 4.5 billions years, first life appeared about one billion years later, even less if you deduct totally unhospitable period. Considering amount of stars there would be more than enough suitable planets. Considering age of MW there is plenty of time for life to appear.

Appearance of humanoids may be indeed rare, but if we are talking about spacefaring races, chances of meeting sentient humanoids drastically increases, because they are obviously more capable of technological advancement. Dolphins may be smart, but it means nothing if they can't create anything.

Work from what we know, using Earth's biodiversity (99% of which has gone extinct or about 5 billion species in random and some cyclical mass extinctions) on this one environmentally diverse planet alone as an analogue:

Let's not forget that our most recent ancestors, that we share 98-99% of our DNA with and evolved under similar environmental conditions on the same plant with 4 million year time frame, look very different and hella ugly to us; not sexy enough to make us want to abandon the f**king of our own species and go extinct.

And then minor genetic mutations cause physical abnormalities within our own species making people look quite horrendous and alien and so not hot, so what about this statistical probability of meeting not 1 but 2 hot space babe races in our galaxy with a few million years of both our evolutions making us facially identical and almost anatomically so, all  on our drastically different planets across the galaxy?

Also this is only the chicks that are hot purely from our Human perspective. All the dude aliens are not hot, except for Batarians of course!

You call it science, I call it sex sells!  ;)

Large boobs are necessary! See it's like this: When Human women enter the ovulation cycle their tiittie balls get swollen and tender and enlarged because they are unusually sexually aroused at this point in their cycle and need to breed. The more Asari mate the more they reach the matron cycle of extreme sexual need to mate and reproduce and the hormones cause those tiittie balls to swell well into the matriarch stage. Unfortunately, at this point they start to droop due to gravity, but unlike Humans whose breast development stops, Asari boobs get bigger and bigger and bigger and bigger and then droopier until at the finality of their life their boobs are dragging on the floor like gigantic swollen water balloons. Trust me, I am a xenobiologist!

The asari should be portraiyed as the one on the bachelor party on ME2: Amorfous creatures that appearance is dependent upon what the observer finds attractive.

Lesbians prefer ladies (females) not gentlemen (males) right?

Lesbians only like ladies.

What you are describing is bisexual with lady preference. Some bisexuals do have a gender preference.

Never heard of the biotic bra? ;)  Now we know why matriarch´s are powerful biotics, so they can keep their boobs from getting droopy.

Pertaining to my theory that Asari -should say they evolved to be attracted to the feminine qualities and female anatomy of Asari and Human females- are lesbian (from our perspective at least), but due to fear of Ardat-Yakshi breed with other species, given an option prefer females, mainly Human females. So, it's the pure-blood/A-Y stigma/fear that forces them to breed with other species/males, but they are attracted to Asari and Human females which look like Asari. But yeah, you are right! :)  So, I want an Asari who only likes Asari and Human females.

I could see asari having some preferences for races or genders. But I doubt BW will ever do it since they already established the "sexuality is fluid" shite with them which is kind of lame. Each asari is different.

Then again, you never know.. but as a romance for the protagonist, the asari will always going to be bisexual.

The asari should be portraiyed as the one on the bachelor party on ME2: Amorfous creatures that appearance is dependent upon what the observer finds attractive.

Put that along with the arguably mind violating habits of Asari and you really start to make them sound pretty creepy.

Like creepy mind violating aliens potentially. But we know that Asari are entirely capable of compassion. That's good. That's not the focus here. Asari should be entirely able to be expressive of a full range of emotions. I'm not asking, nor would I want them to be "monsters" in the sense of the word.

But Asari mind melds are somewhat downplayed and made to seem.. enticing... and enjoyable, which seems to be the case observed so far.

But then again, we know that Asari are capable of forceful melds (ME1 Matriarch Benezia and the Rachni queen)

I'm not sure if that's the best approach, but if it were taken, it would certainly make them feel alien, accomplishing exactly what I had intended. I just favored Asari as they are now, with mind meld stuff intact, but with a slightly different and more uncanny appearance to push the player away from thinking they look attractive in the same ways that human characters might.

I want Asari to be beautiful in their own alien way, much like DA2's elves and darkspawn.

I think it could be interesting if one of the games played around with that.

Like say for example at some point during a mission you encounter a character, maybe an enemy mook, that you need to get information from. He is being uncooperative, but you can have your Asari squadmate do the whole mind meld thing and rip the information you need straight from his mind.

Probably should net major renegade points however if the morality system is still around, and it that Asari would need to have a background where that would be in character.

Aliens in sci Fi are not design to be scientifically accurate. They are designed to be a narrative vehicle and if something is too alien we can't relate to it. We need common frames of reference so the aliens can tell us stories. Without these frames of reference aliens lose the ability to be the narrative vehicle. In fact when aliens are truly alien they get relegated to narrow roles in a Sci-fi Story. Either the 'enemy' or the 'unknown,' and these are both very limited in what stories these types of Aliens can tell.  And these can be very good stories but the alien is limited in what it can do to propel the plot.

Two movie examples of very alien aliens are the Aliens in the Alien franchise of movies and they can only ever be the antagonist in a story and a very simple antagonist at that. It is trying to kill you.  The aliens in the movie abyss, here we see aliens as the 'unknown' and they only ever serve the purpose of being the unknown. Most of the 'drama' in the movie is between how the humans interact with each other in the face of the unknown.

To tell a sophisticated or nuanced story you need aliens to be humans in rubber suits. They can have a couple of alien aspects to them but the rest of them is all human. It needs to be this way because they need to be relatable to us. Having the aliens be fundamentally human also serves to make their alienness a starker contrast. Salarians work because they are mainly human but with fast metabolisms and extreme intelligence. Mordin Solas works when he sings a science base parady to a Gilbert and Sullivan song and we can relate because he is basically a human 'nerd' who talks fast wearing a 'monster' suit. It he was too alien we wouldn't care about him because we couldn't relate to him.

If you take away the humanness to the aliens in mass effect you make the series lesser for it not more. Realism in story telling isn't the best yardstick to use ESPECIALLY in Science fiction.
