Like stereotypes that apparently define every member of a species except when we can make a plot out of it?

All klingons are violent.

All vulcans are logical

All ferengi are ethical businessmen.

There's not really a lot of alternatives.

If you have an alien species that is as diverse as humans, as violent as humans, as logical as humans, as moral as humans, as everything as humans, then for all intents and purposes, they're just humans with rubber ears or whatnot. What's the point of even including them?

You either give aliens distinguishing features as a species from humans or you don't. If you do, those features become stereotypes. If you don't, they're just humans with rubber ears.

ASARI: Blue skinned alien space babes that happen to exemplify every attractive female trait in humans. Because they're totally not meant as sex symbols. The previous statment is a bunch of hooey and a half gnawed on by a grundsau. The visual design of Asari suggests that the entire intent of them orignally was to play entirely into this trope because you love the asari, don't you? Yes, everyone loves the Asari. But does that allow the attempts to flesh them out to actually bear fruit? The issue here is that unless something changes, Asari will be thought of first as blue alien space babes and not as aliens.

6 word's, "bachelor party on illium in ME2." Now go listen.

Or they could be just as varied, but with a completely different approach to their variety, aka, a weird way of thinking, maybe something physiological, maybe something not. Maybe historical, or something else. Many variables to consider and think about. Many options.

Stereotypes reek of writer laziness and lack of imagination, just like these species concepts as a whole.

You're not very good at thinking things through, are you now?

If they share a 'weird way of thinking' you don't understand how that's going to become a stereotype for the species? Same thing with any meaningful physiological difference. Drell are humans that can remember forever. Asari are humans that can mind-meld. Quarians are humans that are sickly.

I don't think you've expressed a working solution that dehumanizes aliens enough either. But that's not the point of this thread.

The point is we need to consider the idea of making Asari look like DA2 darkspawn or elves.

My 'solution' is to accept reality. The reality that aliens in fiction are always to end up as  "As a species, they all tend to do ______. " Or, "As a species, they all tend to have _______."  Or, as a species, they all tend to think ________."

Which is all stereotypes are.

Which is not precisely canon as there is no other evidence to suggest passive mind affecting abilities of Asari.

Those guys may have been inebriated, on Red Sand, or just going nuts. No conclusions can be made with little more than one conversation as evidence.

Shep and Garus should've had a bro talk like them. :P Also on a more serious note, I don't see drug's or drink's making a species look like another species the way it does there and the scene was likely there as our answer to a question some have been wondering since ME1 first let us see an Asari.

The answer is nope we don't. They are just fine as they are. DA suffered a lot from changing things from one game to the other. It's a disservice towards an alien race which is both appreciated and loved by a vast majority of this franchise fandom.

Asari SHOULD be redisigned. Make them more... androgynous looking. The all female thing has to go. It's silly and obvious fan service.

Aye. About time someone said that. Asari need to be more Brienne-ish and/or Cremisius Aclassi-ish.

Nope, I like my space babes staying space babes, thank you very much. I didnt see the point of revamping DA elves in uglier versions of what they were previously. As it was, I just had the impression DAI elves were just anorexic, trashy humans with pointy ears... Made them wholly unappealing. The damn dwarf scout was sexier

When we first played Mass Effect, back in the day, we were probably impressed with all the aliens. But were they really alien as alien should be? Does that thematically fit with the core theme of exploring strange new cultures?

Let's consider.

KROGAN: Yes, seem mostly alien, pretty different. Fleshed out nicely in ME3 genophage cure arc. Kind of fleshed out in ME2 Tuchanka hub.

TURIAN: Yes. They have distinct physical appearance as well. Different means of conducting selves. Fleshed out kind of with Palaven and Tuchanka missions in ME3. Also Turian Sentinel.

VORCHA: Yes, inhuman mook things to shoot. Nuff said. No need to try and understand these. Could be fleshed out more instead of just mostly a codex entry.

VARREN: Yes. Slimy lizard dogs with great intelligence.

HANAR: Yes, space jellyfish cultist things

VOLUS: Yes, amonia based lifeforms with a simialarity to all of us: they like money too, just like us.

ELCOR: Yes, Slow talking elephant-dog hybrid things.

BATARIANS: Yes, Arrival, Colonist and Ruthless backgrounds, BringDownTheSky, that mission with the javelin missiles, several Shepard-batarian interactions that can result in usage of high velocity projectiles.

SALARIANS: Yes, lizard people. For real.

GETH: Yes, robot things that keep getting brainwashed to do the Reaper's dark bidding. Oh yes.

Let's get to the offenders, shall we?

DRELL(Thanks to QMR):  "the female fapbait equivalent" with exposed pecs, super masculinity, and frog eyes that stare into your soul.  Not actually a super serial offender at all, really!

QUARIANS: Mostly alien, a bit sexualized with seductive positional posing. Nothing too much there raising a red flag, but female quarians then take the cake with massively oversized hips. Intended to garner interest from ME1 fan reaction to Tali possibly.  Led to the Tali Sweat thread. Of only questionable moderate offense.

Which is why I propose the following:

I'm glad I could "acquire" the following image.

1311982839703.jpg

And to answer the question?

Greatness happened.

This is exactly what should happen to the Asari. They'll look even more alien and exotic to their fanbase, and they'll seem more plausible to all of us.

I'm pretty sure this isn't a thing.

There's a low cut neckline, but not exposed pecs. Hopefully that changes in the next game. In fact I am pro-nudity for every species. Let's earn that M rating.

All klingons are violent.

All vulcans are logical

All ferengi are ethical businessmen.

Both Star Trek: The Next Generation and Deep Space Nine had Ferengi mercenaries in various episodes.  Still after profit, of course, but acquiring it in ways other than business.  Amending the statement to say "All ferengi chase after profit" may be more accurate, but still wrong, as the female population is not allowed to earn any profit at all.

Enterprise also had Klingon scientists, and the Vulcans in it were sort of angry, fascist dicks, but everyone tries to forget that series (for pretty good reason, mind you).

You kidding? Zaeed mentions a Hanar choking one of his buddies to death once. Their unassuming appearance lulls us all into a false sense of security and then BAM!

That's one story. 99% of the time, they're treated like jamokes and look the part. Wolf in sheep's clothing done right? Look at the quarians. They have weaker immune systems than most of the galaxy and do most of their warring on ships, but look at characters like Tali, Reegar, Koris, and Golo (from Ascension) and you can see they can hang with other species in combat. Volus could also use this makeover, or just go away.

Really, any Star Trek series should have Klingon scientists. How the hell else do they even get off their planet? XD
