(Not asari fan but to their defense about something)

First you do realize that asari don't perhaps look as they seem.

It has been hinted many times in game that asari's look appear different to every race, to be more exact they appear to other races as their own.(you can confirm that in ME2 on Ilium at bachelor party, in where first two friends have to persuade their salarian friend into even coming but slowly out of nowhere he starts taking interest and they all claim that asari looks as their own race and comment that perhaps asari could be controlling them to see them as attractive!)

tumblr_lphdglawmb1qlbl8ko1_500.jpg

I'm pretty sure that was just thrown in as a meta-joke. Such an effect should only really work if the asari is actually around to influence the mind of the viewer. While the more hardcore conspiracy theorists might argue that an asari could leave a lasting effect on the mind where their pictures can still conceal their image, like Liara's photo in Shepard's cabin, a random asari in vid footage should reveal their true form.

I don't think it's a ruse easily maintained. Plus, asari gotta die sometime. You'd think a salarian scientist would discover that their anatomy doesn't match up with what people perceive.

And this was hinted more then once in game about possible mind controlling which does make sense because let's be honest, female humans look exactly like asari(or how they appear to look to us at least) but aliens are not that into humans calling our anatomy weird and etc. so why would they be interested in asari then since they are like blue version of us? Think! Why does every race in ME find asari attractive, when they look nothing like them at all? So again this mind controlling theory does have a water to it. Plus it wouldn't be nothing new, as we all know in Witcher sorceress do same thing in order to appear attractive when their real face could give you nightmares for life. So in my opinion if this theory of "asari are masking their real face like Witcher's sorceresses" proves to be correct(and so far lot of things are pointing at it) then asari are most alien out of alien races then, because as far as we know asari could turn out to actually be looking like this:

Spoiler

The bachelor party dialogue probably wasn't supposed to be taken seriously as a lore dump. It was just there to provide some humor, and there is no reason to suspect that the speculation of a few random characters at a bachelor party is in-universe fact.

It's actually quite easily debunked. If the Asari truly were capable of some sort of mental shape-shifting, it would only affect people those Asari had interacted with. Shepard can view Asari he/she has never met before on video in the LotSB DLC, and they don't appear any differently than other members of their species. TV and film and something like the internet also exist in the Mass Effect universe, and anyone viewing film or photographs of Asari should be seeing them in their true forms. This would be particularly true for humans, the vast majority of whom have never left Earth and have likely never met Asari. It would also make it medically impossible for non-Asari doctors to treat Asari patients, but we know that isn't the case. Dr Chakwas treats Liara and we see Salarian and Human doctors treating Asari patients at Huerta Memorial. X-rays and MRIs would see right through any indoctrination that makes the Asari appear differently to non-Asari. Finally, Asari and humans can wear the same armor whereas Asari cannot wear armor designed for Turians, Krogan, or Quarians. That points to them having a body shape identical to humans.

What do people have against attractive aliens, male or female?

Hello -- Mass Effect is a fantasy game designed to entertain humans.

The idea that the asari and drell are male and female fanservice, and the other races are somehow authentic extra-terrestrial lifeforms, is absurd.

All of the races are fanservice in their own way. The krogan are fanservice in that their animal strength excites our aggressive, primal instincts: everyone loves a badass. The salarians appeal to our love of bulb-headed aliens with large eyes and big brains, the likes of which have become forever ingrained into our popular culture.

When NASA finally finds real aliens they probably won't look any more like krogan, salarains or turians than they do asari or drell.

They certainly won't look or behave like vulcans. Maybe we should eradicate all pretty vulcans from Star Trek lore, too?

In fact, just take away everyone who's nice to look at. I mean, it's not like we play videogames for fun, is it? :P

P.S. I was, um ... responding to general comments on the first and second pages.

I didn't realize this thread was 25 pages long. I thought it was new. lol

I honestly don't care if they make more alien races who look more...alien-like, and less like humans, infact it's something I wish they'd do more with the new species.  But I seriously dislike when they retcon the features of an established race/Specie. So no, I don't want them to change how the asari looks like.

Maybe they just look different in a new engine. Qunari changes their look in every single game, same as elves, maybe it's just a DA thing. DA has a different engine in every single game.

It depends on the differences. They body proportions and faces should still be the same as humans, as we saw humans in Frostbite already.

DA had two engines so far. DA2's engine was a modified version of DAO's, and elves and qunari's change in DA2 from DAO weren't because of the engine, but from changes on those races. The same happened in DAI.

I'm not saying it's always a bad thing (Sometimes I prefer the look of the updated version), but DA should try to stick it and not change it everytime. I hope ME doesn't follow in the same direction.

When I saw this thread pop up, I thought it was gonna be about giving the Asari some extra variation in their 'semi-flexible cartilage-based scalp-crests' (They don't flop around), like how some Krogan are gonna have straight-up horns in Andromeda.

It was not.

For the record, I didn't mind at least some of what they did with the elves in DA2, but think Inquisition did them best. They managed to make a whole bunch of elves who didn't look anything like one-another - contrast Sera, Betrayal Egg and Ameridan, for instance - and yet were still all recognisable as DA elves, and not just 'cause of the ears. Also, my Elfquisitor was frigging adorable:

(Shamelessly ripped off, with a couple of very minor tweaks, from DA:I Sliders.)

They're called "Drell" and they live on Kahje...with the Hanar. So many questions...

I feel like after three games all of the milky way species should stay the same look wise, if they were going to do a radical change (like with elves and qunari in DA) they would have done it already. Plus, they have new alien species to work on, so why spend time redesigning a old one for no real reason.

No. All of the MW species look fine the way they are. Some variety would be welcome though, most aliens (turian, krogan, salarian, quarians) just had palette swaps for the same headmorphs, maybe adding in some more to differentiate them would be good.

I wouldn't mind an upgrade to the asari. They looked too similar to each other. Maybe a wider range of facial features. Even the twileKS had that and asari are pretty much the ME-verse version of them.

As if the other races don't have all their members as fit in the ME game .

I'm al for more body differences inside the various species (humans included) though.

Asari reproduction is probably basically a form of cloning, since no genetic material comes from the "father". So limited variation kind of makes sense

I think the idea is that they have some mechanism by which they randomize, a kind of internal meiosis?

When we first played Mass Effect, back in the day, we were probably impressed with all the aliens. But were they really alien as alien should be? Does that thematically fit with the core theme of exploring strange new cultures?

Let's consider.

KROGAN: Yes, seem mostly alien, pretty different. Fleshed out nicely in ME3 genophage cure arc. Kind of fleshed out in ME2 Tuchanka hub.

TURIAN: Yes. They have distinct physical appearance as well. Different means of conducting selves. Fleshed out kind of with Palaven and Tuchanka missions in ME3. Also Turian Sentinel.

VORCHA: Yes, inhuman mook things to shoot. Nuff said. No need to try and understand these. Could be fleshed out more instead of just mostly a codex entry.

VARREN: Yes. Slimy lizard dogs with great intelligence.

HANAR: Yes, space jellyfish cultist things

VOLUS: Yes, amonia based lifeforms with a simialarity to all of us: they like money too, just like us.

ELCOR: Yes, Slow talking elephant-dog hybrid things.

BATARIANS: Yes, Arrival, Colonist and Ruthless backgrounds, BringDownTheSky, that mission with the javelin missiles, several Shepard-batarian interactions that can result in usage of high velocity projectiles.

SALARIANS: Yes, lizard people. For real.

GETH: Yes, robot things that keep getting brainwashed to do the Reaper's dark bidding. Oh yes.

Let's get to the offenders, shall we?

DRELL(Thanks to QMR):  "the female fapbait equivalent" with exposed pecs, super masculinity, and frog eyes that stare into your soul.  Not actually a super serial offender at all, really!

QUARIANS: Mostly alien, a bit sexualized with seductive positional posing. Nothing too much there raising a red flag, but female quarians then take the cake with massively oversized hips. Intended to garner interest from ME1 fan reaction to Tali possibly.  Led to the Tali Sweat thread. Of only questionable moderate offense.

ASARI: Blue skinned alien space babes that happen to exemplify every attractive female trait in humans. Because they're totally not meant as sex symbols. The previous statment is a bunch of hooey and a half gnawed on by a grundsau. The visual design of Asari suggests that the entire intent of them orignally was to play entirely into this trope because you love the asari, don't you? Yes, everyone loves the Asari. But does that allow the attempts to flesh them out to actually bear fruit? The issue here is that unless something changes, Asari will be thought of first as blue alien space babes and not as aliens.

Which is why I propose the following:

I'm glad I could "acquire" the following image.

1311982839703.jpg

And to answer the question?

Greatness happened.

This is exactly what should happen to the Asari. They'll look even more alien and exotic to their fanbase, and they'll seem more plausible to all of us.

"...Slytherin will help you on your way to greatness..." - Go away Dark-Lord (or should it be: Dork-Lord?) and leave the Asari alone, especially when doing what you propose wasn't even a great idea in Dragon Age 2 (in fact I hated the re-design and still do!)

No really, what you propose is a shitty idea at best and offends a lot of fans at worst (so even commercially speaking it's a bad idea!)!

greetings LAX

ps: I am not knocking Slytherin in Harry Potter (not really - I most likely would be in that house, if it came down to it, as I am ambitious, not stupid (but not Raveclaw-Smart - I might read for pleasure, but not science books etc. more novels etc.) etc.)
