For a more serious viewpoint, if they want aliens to feel "alien" they need to start moving away from designing them as humanoids.

But then they couldn't recycle the same animations for every character!

Seriously though, the problem with going nonhumanoids is a gameplay issue.

 

Also Ive always found Asari to be kinda ugly.  Liara at least.  

Most of them just kinda remind me of "White people with dreads" and all the lack of hygiene that implies. 

 

I think Asari should take more cues from the Banshee design.  That is, taller, elongated limbs and torso, more ornate head fringes, etc.  That would make them sufficiently more "alien" rather than "Human with weird hair"

The features aren't unique. A human can be petite, have no jawline, long neck, or a weird nose too. The ears are pretty much their only unique feature.

As much as I hate Asari and want to see them wiped off the face of the Milky Way... I have to disagree with you. Liara is pretty. Which only serves to throw oil in the Fire, really. They are not only designed to be the hot blue Alien Space Babes, they're actually looking good. Goddamnit. They have to go.

Seriously though, the problem with going nonhumanoids is a gameplay issue.

 

Played a 12 inch character in a P&P RPG once. I spent so much time thinking about stuff like "can I turn the pages of a book" and similar stuff, the characterization suffered. It was more about the character´s race and how everything is different than the person behind it. Same problem with the dude who played a 7 ft man made of living stone. 

 

it´s not a problem for NPC´s but squadmates could be problematic. And well taking care that the quadroped doesn´t move silly in places.

Asari are space elves though.  Monogender and skin colour aside, they're taken straight out of the fantasy playbook of impossibly long lived supposedly wise and ancient race with strange powers who are inevitably hiding things the protagonist needs because of their own insufferable arrogance.

If any species should be redesigned it is the Quarians sans helmet. They have only been seen a few times without their helmet so it is no big deal to retcon them and make them more alien.
