I'd rather SP and MP be kept separate outside of flavor aspects.

I don't love DAMP as much as I like ME3 multiplayer, but I did love how those multiplayer characters have distinctive personalities, and how they show up at Skyhold. I wish they would banter occasionally, instead of just standing there.

Anyway, I don't want a cooperative single player, but I would like it if the MP characters had stories and personalities again.

Please no, and no multiplayer either.

It can work. We're no longer tied to split screens. Even the dialogue options can work.

Each player chooses their own response to the shared conversation and the combo of choices determines how the scene evolves. A or A+A gets A. B or B+B gets B. A + B gets C.

I think it would have to be optional and by invite only. No random unknown person showing up in your game. You and two friends bickering about how to tame the wilds of Andromeda.

Maybe there would even be, scripted dialogues between the players that potentially go in bad directions. Three friends start the game together and by the second act they're at each other throats; pulling guns on each other. That would be one way to settle disputes. Go down a bad script, kill your friend and they're no longer in your game. What could be more glorious than that. Okay bad script leads to you killing your friend on your game and them killing you on their game. Everyone wins. Congratulations Bioware, job well done. I'm game.

Finally get to find out who my real Mass Effect friends are.

Forgot to add, maybe that's why Johnny Cash is singing about Ghost Riders in the Sky.

Yeah one thing I actually would enjoy is occasionally spotting an MP character hanging around somewhere. Bonus points if they can be interacted with, at least insofar as just getting a line of dialogue out of them if you click on talk.

Giving the MP characters names and personalities was an annoying mistake, at least in my opinion. The banter gets stale quickly and it breaks the immersion when you have multiples of the same character in the party.

I don't want them to have banter; I just want to see them somewhere, albeit harder to find than the NPC's just lingering around Skyhold.

For that they'd need to be distinct personalities with a name and backstory again, not the nameless MP characters we have in ME3.

That is a downside, I agree. It's even weirder when they keep bantering while fighting a dragon.

"Guys, of all the times that we should focus, this is the most of those."

I still like the personalities in general. :P I enjoy a few of those characters more than certain SP companions.

If my Inquisitor could speak with Korbin, or Belinda, or Cillian, or Argent, I would be pretty happy.

I don't think co-op would be the right way to go, considering that multiplayer is likely to be a type of competitive cooperative type of gameplay.  That being said, I why so many want it.  Exploration and discovery is great, but it's even better with friends.  I know it sounds cheesy, but I believe that to be the truth.

That being said, I would like to be able to invite other players to my ship for the sake of claiming bragging rights.  First off, you get to show off how your character looks.  Second of all, you could show off your armor, guns, and trophies to your friends.  Then of course, you could show off your Mako and your ship in general.  Full-on co-op would be a step too far, but I think this would be a nice addition in its own way.

I would enjoy that, since I have enjoyed a co-op mode with my husband before.  However, I don't think it would work for this game.  It's easier for something like NWN or D3, due to the lack of big dialogue choices and highly rendered cutscenes for the main characters.  ToR was ridiculously expensive, and such a feature probably wouldn't work well for a non-MMO.   The two should be kept separate.

I don't see how choices and cutscenes would hinder the ability to add co-op to ME:A. All would take is to give your co-op buddy full control over one of the squad members and boom, you have co-op!

Sure, the co-op player wouldn't be able to make his/her own character but it would still be enjoyable, especially if you reward the co-op player in other ways (for example by giving the co-op player resources that he/she can use in his/her own campaign).

So, would one have to ride shotgun while the player controlling the PC has all the decision making?  That doesn't sound like a lot of fun to me at all.  If it's the first run for the second player, that strikes me as a neverending ride of spoilers.  Should a person joining the PC have to play the single player game first?  Most games with co-op allow players to join and get into the game without having to play it on their own first.  It's not a bad idea, but I can't see it working in ME, or in a lot of BW games to be honest.

Sadly, I've noticed that a lot of co-op games are going the way of the dodo, especially in RPGs.

@Sully I hear you there.

They already record multiple player character voices, and have tech set up to have variable party members in cutscenes so I don't think it's completely out of reach. It would add a whole new layer of complexity so they'd need to embrace it fully, but I think the idea has potential.

This is how Saints Row did it, with the exception that in Saints Row you use your own custom character in co-op, but player 2 still follows the lead of player 1 and doesn't have any decision-making abilities other than what weapons and outfits he/she uses for her own character.

It worked completely fine. I had tons of fun cooping the Saints Row games with my buddy Seboist.

Didn't Dungeon Siege 3 do this, anyone here play the co-op in that?

I think we'll just agree to disagree here.  I just can't see it happening at all.  Plus, Saints Row doesn't have choices that have an impact on subsequent games, unlike ME and DA.  Each SR games stands on it's own.  If there was a way to do it like ToR, with customizable player characters (within the human-only PC in this case) and every player getting at least a chance for input, then I'd probably be more open to the idea.

I'm not against the idea though.  If they can do it in way that doesn't involve taking control of a squad mate, I'd support it.  I don't think the idea is a bad one at all, and I do miss that form of gameplay in RPGs.  I don't consider SR the same kind of RPG as ME and DA are.  Note that I do think SR is a form of a RPG, but quite different form the setup of DA and ME.  As it is, I think we'll get co-op MP again, with a separate SP campaign.

BioWare hasn't done SP co-op since NWN, and I can't see them taking away dev time to add this.  I don't think it's a waste of time, but given that BW can have problems with getting music into their non-story zones in DA:I due to resources with the year extension, co-op is very unlikely. (Immersion my foot, I know it was the music not being considered a priority for resources.  It still makes me quite irritated.)

I can see why it's a request though, and if they can do it, then I'd be happy with it.   :)

You'd need to have a good buddy to make that work in a story-heavy environment. Or you sacrifice the story-heavy environment for more action. I'd rather go with the story for SP and have a dedicated coop MP.

One of the biggest potential wastes of Mass effect, to me, was having squadmates of 3, but not allowing friends to join in and play as the squadmates.

Do you think this will be changed in MEA?

I'd prefer MP being completely dropped or made a game of its own without tainting anymore the real game. I buy BioWare games for the SP game, I don't care for MP. Nothing good have ever come out from MP for those that enjoy SP. I've never seen anything translated from MP di SP. Nor weapons, nor armours, nor classes or fun stuff. MP just take from SP without giving back anything.
