Gather around kids, I'll tell you a story about why we can't have nice things.
Years ago,a company called Bioware made games. Some of these games had co-op mode where you could play the game with your friends. Bioware made this feature likely because they thought it would sell more copies of the game, because players could have a fun shared experience.
Then one day a terrible Evil Alliance (EA for short) took over Bioware. Bioware, now a slave to the EA, was forced to make games that would sell millions of copies, for a minimum cost. There was talk about 'revenue streams' and 'microtransactions'.
Selling a few extra copies wasn't enough for the EA monster. It needed constant revenue. There was no money in 'co-op' play or solely single player games. Players must compete, not co-operate! Biowares EA masters snarled. They must want to one up each other, play for better gear so they can keep up to and surpass their peers, not merely 'have fun'.. EA said with a sneering chuckle. We must give them incentive to pay real money in the hopes of getting rare loot drops, so make sure gaining advancement in game is as tedious and long as possible.. and Bioware obeyed, as they had no choice. All games must have multiplayer! EA decreed. Every game must sink or swim on it's constant revenue stream! Push multiplayer on as many suckers, err I mean customers as possible! Make incentives to play Multiplayer! focus mainly on Multiplayer in all game play and marketing! Make us some money!
And that, kids, is why we can't have nice things.
