Welcome to the guild of Makers and craftsmen. If you're reading this topic then you're interested in becoming an:
Artificer
The meats and potatoes of this build are combining the passives Opportunity Knocks from the Artificer tree and Looked Like it hurt from the Sabotage tree with a high critical hit chance to having constantly low cooldowns for talents and stamina for using those talents. DPS wise this build is one of the top, possible at the top.
Skills:
Archery: 2 points
Death from Above: Bonus damage when attacking from an elevated surface. Passive needed to acquire the next talent.
Leaping Shot: Your main offensive talent: When all hits connect it's a good chance you'll be able to use it again on the spot depending on your Critical Hit Chance.
Artificer: 9 points
Spike Trap: 300 AOE weapon damage is nice every once in a while when you want to blast a mob into the air but we mostly need this talent for...
Opportunity Knocks: 0.5 second cooldown reduction on every critical hit you and everyone else in the party lands. The bread of the build, since this is were the DPS lies.
Set Them Up: 25% Bonus damage on traps, such as Spike Trap and Elemental Mines. Good passive. Needed to go further into the tree.
Elemental Mines: Really good damage dealing skill that can detonate combos .
Throw Everything: More reserve stamina=more mines.
And Take Then Down: Whole Party gets %5 Critical Hit Chance. A Must have passive.
Fallback Plan: Panic button for a quick escape and recovering health.
Tricks of the Trade: increase the damage and duration of all status effects the party applies. This means effects like sundering and fear stay longer.
Hail of Arrows: The Boss and High Dragon nuke. You will have insane damage using this Focus with any talent, especially Leaping Shot.
Sabotage: 5 points
Caltrops: Don't even bother with this, needed for the next passive.
Looked Like It Hurt: +10 Stamina restored for everyone of your critical hits. The butter of this build, because it's how we replenish the Thedas Machine Gun's "ammo".
Hook and Tackle: Mobility and closing the gap for Leaping Shot and Elemental Mines.
It Beats Walking: Eliminates stamina cost and cooldown time for Hook and Tackle.
Cheap Shot: Sunder armor for 6 seconds when you land a critical hit.
You read that right, you can have all the essentials by level 9(8 if human) and basically finish the build at 15-16. Every point you spend after this will be for getting more talents to use, enhancing talents, or getting more passives. Mix it up and see which one fit you play-style the best.
Not all of the gear suggestions below are necessary for this build, but it's best to show you your options.

Notes:
Don't worry about not having 100% Critical Hit Chance right away, even on bosses. This build is meant to be a work in progress the whole game since the Tier 3 mats you need will take a while to get.
Interact with the glowing box inside Chateau d'Onterre to gain a permanent increase of +10 to your Cunning.
